Tam, Jade and Franky's European Adventure

So a wee update on mum .

It seems after a few scans etc she has degenerative spinal. .something
Basically like her shoulder and her hip her spine is starting to crumble at bits
But unfortunately they can't replace those bits like her hip ...so it will get worse and it's just a case of pain management.

I've been on the phone with my sister the last hour getting the updates.

She's telling me that I'm going to get a bit of a shock at just how much mum has deteriated since Christmas and how frail she's become. ..
She's now having to be assesed at home to see how she will cope.

So it's not sounding very good ....i hate seeing her aging and losing her independence. She's getting home tomorrow if they have sorted her pain relief but with two zimmer frames one for upstairs and one for down. So many problems in one year I used to think my mum was a tough old cookie and live to a hundred but my sister's talking like we will be lucky to have 5 years ...im now worried and thoroughly down in the dumps. Right now I can't see my second year travelling happening that's for sure. P

I don't want to get old

Tam, sorry to read about your mum. I'm thinking the next few years will mean a change for me also as my mum is now beginning to show her age.

Getting old is better than the alternative!

It's very upsetting when your indefatigable, proud and independent Mum suddenly changes before your eyes and turns into a frail bent little old lady.
It's something we never forsee happening but I'm afraid it is almost inevitable.
I can offer no advice or help except just show her you love her and tell her while you still can .

It's just so many things at once

She's been going to paeditrist for over a year now with her feet as they are in a right state.

She gets her eyes lasered every other week

Her shoulder joint is worn out so limited movement in one arm and constant pain.

Then she had a stroke 2 months ago

She has fell more times this last year than I can remember

And now this with her spine.

And to top it all off she lost her wee dog last month.

Just so unfair

It’s very difficult when the roles are reversed.
Mum, who used to look after us, now needs us to look after them.
Happened to me a few years ago and happens to most of us at some time.
Just do your best to look after her, at least you also have your sister close by as well.
Unfortunately it’s all part of life and getting older but that doesn’t make it any easier to face.

Best wishes, Richard.

So sorry to hear about your mum Tam. I'm sure you will be pleased to get home & see her. My mum is 97 this year, has been blind for years but still managed at home on her own untill just over a year ago when she had to go into a home. To be fair she is enjoying it there as they do everything for her, even though she just stays in her room, she has company at the push of a bell. It does mean i know she is safe when i go away. Best wishes to you & your mum. Keep your chin up.

.ideally I wanted to hold off till just before crossing so jade didn't get the throws all messy again but I might just do them there anyway ...they aren't that bad and are only really to protect the light coloured upholstery but I would like to present the van as best as I can having been living in it the last 12 months.
Wash em, put them on wrong side up, then just before the viewing turn em over.

A most enjoyable afternoon....:D

We should arrive at La Mailleraye some time on Saturday afternoon if you are still around Tam.
We will probably be there for 2-3 days if anyone else is there. Come and say hello.
Fun stickers are deployed front and rear. :D

Richard.
Hang on a week and I might be there.:)

Sorry to hear about mums condition, with you being a young boy I take it that it's happening to her at a much younger age than it would to most.

She's 74 but seems to have gone right down hill in the last year .....

Only problem with that is any dirt that's then on the throws gets rubbed on the beige upholstery that I'm trying to protect with the throws in the first place lol

74is no age (says me getting dangerously close myself ), but life treats us all differently, I have a chum barely 60 and she's been falling apart for a few years and has now been permanently pensioned off.I was diagnosed with MS about 10 years ago but am fortunate enough to be a lot healthier than many of my younger "healthy " friends.
Life and health seem to be pretty much of a lottery, we just have to accept what is handed to us and do the best we can with it.
Tho it now seems to be recognised that loneliness does have a considerable bearing on ones health.

Sorry your mum is having a hard time.
It is c...p when you get old, and there seems to be a point when the body just seems to have had enough and deteriorates quickly.
I hope they manage the pain well for her, she will be pleased to see you, and Jade.

Get your finger out man and get a move on.
We have to leave La Mailleraye on Tuesday for Cite Europe, then tunnel on Wednesday.

Richard.
We are going the other way, In York at the moment while the air is being fitted not crossing until the 6th.

Great to meet you today Tam, I've started reading it and I'm up to page 16, only another 265 pages to go!

Safe travels home
