Tam, Jade and Franky's European Adventure

Most dogs I've known that have had to wear halti's dislike them intensely, but they do serve a purpose, although IMO there are better and easier ways.
Buying a clicker would be good as it will be loud enough for the sound to carry and will always be the same sound (not altering with emotions like exasperation, impatience etc,) because although she may not understand the words, she will pick up on your tone .
Timing is also vitally important otherwise she may be associating the click with the wrong thing.
Tam, please humor me with a quick test run.
Arm yourself with a ball point pen and some very small, high value treats, (like a cold sausage the thickness of your pinky cut into 2mm slices, each one then quartered),ideally more exciting than her normal feed that she knows she is going to get anyway. Shut yourself in the van with Jade, doors closed .
Leave her to do her own thing - click the pen, when she looks up, quickly toss her a treat. Repeat rapidly, so lots of tiny treats (known as priming the clicker).
Next you could call her name if she looks at you or moves even a step in your direction click /treat, keep repeating, lots of clicks lots of treats.
If/When she actually comes directly to you jackpot! Several treats.
If the van is too cramped, wait til the morning, put her on her zippy lead (tho a line would be better), thread it through the bottom step and you retreat about 6 foot. Call her name, if she looks at you, instantly click reward, if she moves toward you, bigger reward. Chuck or drop the rewards on the ground, No encouragement or reward for jumping up.
Please try that and let me know how you get on.
.
Ok it can't hurt ...we shall give it a go.
I've got a cooked chicken breast here I'll cut up and try it in the morning

I think she's had enough for today

Val 2 dogs seems to have really good ideas and it is important not to expect too much too soon. So give them a go. Training a pup is hard work and takes time and it often feels like one steo forward and two back, but just think how much she can do now that she couldn't two weeks ago. One of our dogs was a complete pain with pulling really hard and nothing would get her attention. I used one of the halter things that went round her nose and there was immediate improvement. She hated it but it did let us make some progress and we were soon able to abandon it. So maybe keep that in reserve for now. There's just so much to take in and I think you're doing great!

We have short training sessions but sometimes Roly is eating so many teeny pieces of chicken that later in the day her farts are rank :D2

I'm going to make you jealous now Tam. Her morning walk today was almost perfect. As soon as we leave the house now she's there at my side looking up. She used to pull like a steam train dashing in every direction. That's in under a week with the method I shared with you.

She's very young and you're asking her to curb her natural instincts. Give her time.

Chicken breast will be great Tam, it will be new and exciting for her. Just tiny pieces, lots of them.
The pair of you are doing great

Oh i know and I stress to make the point that I'm not annoyed at her I'm just frustrated that I can't seem to communicate what I want her to do.
In a lot of ways she's come on amazing I mean she sleeps all through the night she doesn't have accidents in the van she's no longer travel sick she rides on the bike she fetches the ball ( sometimes) etc so she's doing great overall

LOL yes I've been envious of you in many ways. Jade is a star. I bet it won't be long before you're telling us you've cracked the walking and the recall.

(But can Jade do Roll Over :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:)

Karen

Regarding a harness versus a collar,I think you would find a harness allows her to pull with a greater degree of comfort.

Roll over lol ...listen I can't even get her to lie down yet without having to put a treat on the ground after she's sat down.

Yes you could be right although I can't remember if she pulled on the harness before. I'll try her in morning just to see

Now now you two! I was always accused of being competitive at dog club, but we could end up with Roly versus Jade in the beautiful babies competition lol

The only instant cure I've found for pulling is a front lead harness. They look similar to aany other but the one l have has a hole for the neck, a section that ends on the back just behind the shoulders, and 'breastplate'. The breastplate goes back between the front legs & has two short straps that join with the pad on the back. It's a very comfortable thing for the dog to wear but it has a lead connection mid-chest. If the dog pulls it turns. Like this (the one l use) -

My opinion FWIW is that toilet training should simply be using the trigger word whenever she does her business without any attempt to use the word to encourage her to go. That'll come naturally and in time at her pace. Do your own research on front lead harnesses and if you try it just walk with her for a while with the harness on. She'll get the message. She's so young that any training IMO should be passive - use the command after she does something right without being asked and at the same time treat or praise her.

Tam, it's so good to see a new dog owner taking their new-found responsibility seriously. It really annoys me to see how many untrained dogs there are. It's not good for the owner and it's not good for the dog either. Jade is very fortunate to have found you.

Personally I don’t like the Halti.
Have you got a squeaky toy? That might provide the distraction.
Try making her sit and wait before moving off when she pulls.
The thing to remember when training is not to do it all the time. I trained a gun dog (for my personal use) and straight out from the house was training then when after a while and a good result I would let her off to play.
Something I’ve discovered with my JRT (people say they are hard to train) if I whisper she’s more likely to listen.

I swear this pup has a bladder that a camel woukd be proud of. I took her out for last wees last night at 11.45 and we walked round and round and round and nothing.
Considering the last time she had been out was around 7pm I thought she'd have needed one.
So we gave up and went to bed ....to be honest I was half expecting a puddle this morning but nope nothing and she woke me at around 7.20 this morning.

So I got up dressed and took her out thinking she must be desperate .....but nope she did her usual ten minutes sniffing about trying to eat everything before finally doing a wee.
Unbelievable

Going to move today ....not sure where yet but a change of scenery needed

My daughters Springer is similar, she will go out about 10 pm next morning she is quite happy to have breckies and go back to sleep and go out for her first wee about 11am.:)

You have got a bowl of fresh water down for her to drink haven't you :p?
:D2
Yes always water there for her and she is drinking. Most of the time
I guess she's just very good at holding it

Ok so the chicken was a success .....and I used her harness for her walk today ....no pulling and done very well

I videod it but I don't know what I've done to the damm thing but it won't play Grrrr

Anyway she done really well there will see if she does the same later

Good, Delighted to hear it.
Now for an informal lesson, no commands or demands -after Jade has had her playtime/mooch on her extending lead or loose on a beach, when you are within 5 or 10 minutes of the van - put her on an approx 6 fot fixed lead and continue to head for home, you can do the exercise of turning 180°if she pulls ahead, but now for the precision bit - the second she is APPROACHING your heel (in the act of passing ) without speaking CLICK and drop a piece of chicken beside your foot, preferably in front of her nose. If she pauses even a second on a loose lead beside you, Click and treat again.
It's known as "shaping" or "moulding " the behaviour, so Jade comes to realise of her own volition that on a loose lead beside your leg is a nice place to be.

I need to get a clicker ...i don't even have a clicking pen :p

But I'll look the next shop I'm in

What is the youth of today like! Lol.
It is possible to improvise using your tongue on the roof of your mouth ,but you would need to acustomise her to that sound heralding a forthcoming reward.

A full water tank but no ball point pen! !

Yes I can do that click with my tongue but not 100 times in a row which it would need just now ha ha

My dog is female Tam. Someone who breeds dogs told me years ago that the female can go ages without weeing, something to do with the giving birth process , when she's tied up doing something else. Brilliant that she's gone all that time , and woken you in the morning with no wee accidents(y)(y). LONG may it continue.

Spoke too soon with the training lol ....evening walk was a disaster she pulls constantly like a cart horse, you try to get her attention and she jumps up looking for treats ....frustrating as anything lol im starting to think she doesn't speak English

But tomorrow is another day .....whats the general view on the choker type chain collars? Do they stop the pulling?
I don't think she understands what I'm trying to get her to do.
It’s a perseverance test. Persevere!
I’ve used choke chains before with success, others think they are cruel. If you use one it will almost certainly work. Just don’t be too hard with it.....but I don’t think you are the type to go anywhere near that limit.
