Tam and Toby ~~ Hunting Zorba .....Take two.

Its like a split charger but more powerful so charges the leisure batteries more when you are driving.

My solar charges all batteries and its working good when its bright or sunny

But on days like this where its cloudy etc i get very little from the solar and if using the heating etc at night i struggle for power.

Fed up with it so next van im investing in proper kit so i never have to worry about power.
Got it! Thanks.

Im going to check what the split is on my charger,as between leisure and vehicle. I think it does leisure first then vehicle, but will check handbook when visiting storage site.

They usually ro the other way around ... vehicle battery first then leisure.

Hi Tam
Alight change of topic and forgive me if you have already discussed it.
You are planning Bulgaria, Romania route back (which is very exciting) but I'm wondering why you ruled out Albania, Coatia. I'm thinking that would be warmer and more coastal (which you clearly like). The black sea coast will be colder in March than the adriatic. I guess the downside might be wild camping opportunities.

Tam, I'm sure it was on this thread that someone (Lenny HB ?) suggested using the cab air-con to clear your windscreen of condensation.
Well it works!
My little Toyota Aygo is horrendous in the winter for spontaneously misting up when I'm driving. I end up with the blower on full and the windows open in the pouring rain trying to clear it. Well I put the air-conditioning on and it cleared within seconds!
It would never have entered my head to put it on in the winter. Wish I'd known 5 years ago when I bought the car!

The aircon on my Skoda comes on automatically when I have the heating set to demist. Never realised why before!

Had the same with my Aygo and always kept the air con on, winter and summer. I've never know car windows to steam up so readily! Do exactly the same now changed the car to a Yaris!

Nope other way round.
Hmmm mine doesn't seem to then ....always shows my engine battery voltage higher than my leisures ....never seen that one below 12.9 and when engine running its up at 13.7+ from the off but leisures are down at 12.8 -13.1 etc ..

Good question ....and theres a few reasons really
First one is the greek /Albania border is closed as far as i know....it certainly was in November.
Second is while Bulgaria and Romania are not in shengen they are in the EU and my insurance covers them whereas not covered for Albania etc
Thirdly while only planning to spend a couple of weeks in each ive never been before so i want to see what they are like as possible longer trips next year ...to extend my 90 days to 9 months+

Yes i did it yesterday morning to clear the windscreen after the freezing night before ....works well

Getting your solar & alternator charging muddled up.

Naw im not lol podney was talking about his split charger charging his leisures before his engine and i said its normally engine battery first.

We were on about the benefits of a b2b over a split charger.

My solar is all fine 👍

I told yer, I thought you knew something about cars, obviously not.
Aye but its mostly older motors ive had and not many had aircon to be honest ...
The ones that did i never use it lol.
Even on this when its hot ive usually just got the window open

Podney

Unlike the normal voltage regulator on a vehicle which cuts back the charge from the alternator when the engine battery has recovered to full charge after the start load and thus only gives a low charge to the leisure batteries, the B2B convinces the alternator to keep charging at a high rate and it bangs charge into the leisure batteries so that after 1-2 days static it only needs 1/2 to 1 hour of driving to bring them up to full, depending what Amps the B2B you fit. For a fuller better explanation see here

Votronic also do one which has the advantage that it will integrate with Eletrobloks unlike the Sterling one. We connected ours independently of the elecrtroblok which is simpler. We can see the volts being much higher but not see the actual amps going in, but I know it is high.

We always move every 2-3 days and often not far, but the B2B keeps up with everything we use.

If like Tam you are well away from other campers you can run the engine to be able to stay longer, but you need to get the revs above 1000rpm - stick on accelerator? As Tam says then independent of the sun.

We fitted ours and cost is not very high over the 7 years I have had it.

I have always used aircon to demist my vehicles in winter,,ever since i first had air con on a vehicle back in the 90s, You should or so i have been told run your aircon in winter to stop the rubber seals drying out,,,BUSBY.

Is there any other way!!;);):LOL::LOL:

Just to make you all feel less envious ....its peeing it down here today and its cold ....only 9°
View attachment 456780

We have a couple of days of this forecast then its meant to be back up to 18°

On days like this thats when i wish i had a logburner 😁 my next van will and a diesel heater
Fit Alde with underfloor. I wouldn't consider anything else having had it.

You're at crossed purposes. Engine running it's cab then hab. EHU or solar it's the other way round.

Ah. Understood. Makes sense. I got a green card the other day and was very surprised to find Albania on it.

I dinnae like alde ...had it in my burstner and my frankia ...

Im going for good old fashioned woodburner and diesel back up in next van
Drier heat too

Make your minds up you lot!!!!!!!!!!! :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: ;)
Right cause there seems to be lots of confusion

A split charger and a b2b charger will charge engine/ starter battery first and then the leisures ....although a b2b is a much higher output than a split.

The solar charger ..( or at least my solar charger ) charges leisure batteries first and then will trickle charge the engine/starter battery

Thats what i said way back there ^^^ as you had said you thought your split charger did the leisure batteries first and i said no its the other way round engine first then leisure WHICH is why for folk like me that don't use hookup i need a more powerful charge from the engine than yhe split provides so my next van will have a 30a b2b fitted .

I would have put one on this but theres no point if im gonna sell the van ...

But i think for fulltiming i need to build my own to suit my requirements....so my electrics will likely cost me 3 or 4 grand in my next van.
