HI all thinking of touring Europe next year for few weeks and want to take dog
Crossing channel and heading for Germany.
Never taken dog before so need advice on what we need to do
Thanks garry

We’ve taken our dog abroad for the last 14y, at least 21 days before travel the dog will need a rabies’s injection ( covers dog for between 1-3 y ) then arrange a AHC ( animal health certificate) no more than 10 days before travel, it can be with your vet check what they charge as some can be expensive but depending on your crossing there are vets who will supply one for around £100, just booked one for our new dog with pet pass Havant Portsmouth, our vet (who charges £265 for AHC) has sent them all the dogs information and will pick it up before we sail, then when abroad we’ll secure a pet passport for her,

There are more branches of passpets now so you may find one local to you. They charge £99 for the AHC. Of course the tunnel is easiest as you stay with dog in the MH but, as it is now more expensive, we went P&O Dover Calais in September and booked the dog lounge which was great. The dog checks were done in MH together with our passports. It is worth checking your dog’s chip at your own vets before you go as it can be nervewracking passing the reader over the neck and not finding it for 2 or 3 goes.

If you decide you want to get an EU Pet Passport please read the following thread, to make the process as easy as possible:

Good place to start would be the Gov.UK information under the "Passports, Travel & Living Abroad" tab entitled "Taking your pet dog, cat or ferret abroad". Also strongly advise reading the excellent explanatory article written by Maz at #5 above about obtaining an EU Pet Passport.

First post claxon.
We have travelled twice this year with the dog.
For the first trip, I had a rabies jab done at the local vet and then used a AHC specialist for the certificate because they were half the cost. You need to have the rabies jab done in plenty of time before you travel.
Whilst we were away I used a lovely vet in Bruges who gave the worming pill required for return to UK and provided an EU pet passport.
Second trip was much easier as you just show the pet passport. You need to remember to have a worming pill administered at the vet a few days before returning to UK and have the passport signed by them.
This all put me off traveling to Europe after we got the dog, however it's much easier than it sounds. The staff at Eurotunnel are absolute professionals with all this. Also if you download Eurotunnel's app and ensure your booking is shown, the app sends you reminders of the dates. Don't know about the ferry.

The thing to realise with an EU pet passport is that the Rabies booster jabs can ONLY be administered by a vet in the EU and the EU passport is updated by the vet giving the jab, so if you only get a one year rabies jab it's entered on the EU pet passport - you have go make sure to go back over to the EU before it expires and get a booster. Same applies to a 3 year rabies jab, but of course you have longer to get the booster done in the EU. You can of course got it done well before the expiry date of the current one if you are traveling in the EU at the time.

I used the Abbeywell Vets branch at Folkestone in Feb this year, 99 quid instead of 220 at my own vet. They do suggest you collect the AHC the day before travel in case anything is amiss. It's pretty unlikely as your vet sends the medical history first and they check it all before sending you a payment request and then completing the forms. My mutt now has a Porugese Passport for 20 minutes of our time and 30 euros.

Hi would you mind sharing what vets you used in Brugges and di they require an eu address. i have spoken to one that said the passport only lasts until all the spaces on the worming register are filled up. did you have the same?

That is true; they obviously need somewhere to write and apply their stamp but there are 16 spaces available spread over 4 pages in the passport! That is a lot of AHCs.

Vet is helpful and with a lovely manner, a person called Lieve. I emailed a few weeks ahead to make an appointment (essential judging how busy she was) and checked by email that a passport could be sorted. When we arrived there were two MH parked outside with Brits and their pooches. You can park on the street and Lieve can loan you a permit.
Lieve administered a three year rabies booster.
The pp has my UK address. We have used it three times now and nobody at the border has queried that.
The pp has lots of pages. We won't use them all in the three years it lasts and it saves £££s a trip on an AHC.
If you travelled more often than we do then you might fill it up.
We parked near the city centre afterwards and had lunch and a mosey around.
Happy to answer more questions.

you might fill it up
Can't see why that would be a problem, vet in Portugal transferred my dogs 3 year UK Rabies info from AHC to a new EU passport, I'm sure an EU vet would start a new passport with existing info if it was full.

A Pet Passport lasts longer than three years - it lasts for the lifetime of the animal or until the spaces are filled up. It is the rabies vaccination that lasts for 3 years, then you need a booster before it expires.

Was with Lieve two days ago to get a new PP. our French one has only a few spaces remaining, and a new rabies vaccination was required. So easier to just get new passport, with new jab. Also had worm treatment for returning.
