Is it correct that when leaving the UK via Dover, Newhaven etc or any other ferry port, the British Passport / Customs control people will always ask you "are you carrying any cash" and "how much and in what currency"?

I have never been asked this question at an airport when flying out of the UK.

Is there a cash limit in UK Sterling that you can take out of the UK?

I can understand that anyone taking £100k for example in used notes onto the Dover - Calais ferry whilst going on holiday in their MH would raise some suspicions but surely, a grand (for example) in used cash would be allowed! Its your own money after all.

Has anyone been asked this question at the ports? If so, does anyone know what the cash limit is? Has anyone ever been searched either personally or had their MH spun over by customs when leaving the UK regarding how much cash you are carrying?

Many thanks,
Rick

PS........ no, im not planning anything untoward, just asking a genuine question as, come Spring time, im hoping to do my first run to France in my MH.

As said, principles. If no one had any we would all end up being walked all over
That is what you do with principles.
Oh I have principles and will stand by ones that are important AND likely to have a meaningful effect for the better, but what's the point of making life difficult for yourself when your doing so in this instance will make not one iota of difference to the seller?

To the OP: Be aware that many PFS are now unmanned particularly in rural areas that you will encounter on the D roads. As best I recall they are card only and you really need to pay in Euros or (a) there is a poor exchange rate and/or b) there is a flat fee for the currency exchange. You can find manned stations but your SatNav may direct you to a few unmanned stations before you find one and it might be out of hours when you get there and there will be no option to pay in Sterling after you have filled up if they are open.

I use a pre-paid credit card. That way there is a limit to what can be stolen and good chance to put a stop on payments if the card is stolen. I use a FairFX card but there are lots of different decent cards around. I usually have circa £300 cash by way of reserve, £60-80 in euros and Swiss Francs for small purchases like an ice-cream plus my FairFX card pre-loaded with Sterling, Euros and Swiss Francs and then finally my Co-op bank account card is there as back up and I can easily add funds to the FairFX card as required rather than suffer the poor rate of exchange etc the Co-op offers.

Taking large amounts of Sterling cash means that you have to find somewhere to change it. Ferries and the like give a very poor rate of exchange (as you know) and trying to park up in a MoHo to find a bank in a town centre is a pain. Equally ordering large quantities of Euros in cash is a pain and time consuming.
Paying by plastic (or your phone) increasingly makes sense.

About 60 years ago, there was a £40 limit on taking money out. My parents took us 3 to a lovely hotel in Brittany, but he didn’t realise how expensive it was . After about 4 days, and hoping to get away, he told Madame. She smiled and replied “don’t worry, I have an account in London”. 😥

When traveling in more out of the way places,(eg Australia) it can save a possibly very long wait being able to pay cash for fuel if the eftpos system is down

A lot of people dont realise that you need to declare cash over E10K going into NI although not the other way into GB
My friend got stopped going to ni,he had over £10,000, but luckily had proof of invoice to pay
