Re the costing more for ad free version: Yes that’s true however, I just got a new Kindle. The one I wanted only came with the ads but I phoned amazon customer service and explained I didn’t want the ads and they were slowing down the “wake up” process so they removed them for free. Usually costs around £10.I bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite this year to replace my old Google Nexus which died terminally. It has a good screen although being a Samsung it is a bit quirky compared to the Google but as Google don't make affordable tablets any more it was a reasonable alternative.
A Kindle is designed for reading text and as suggested a Kindle Paperwhite is best for reading in the sun but it would be useless for magazines and wouldn't run them anyway - unless they were in the Kindle store.
A Kindle Fire is a sort of tablet but is heavily slanted towards Amazon products. I would check it can run the magazine app - it may not. They also come in versions with and without adverts. You want the latter which will cost slightly more.
