Supermarket Shopping whilst Motorhoming

We are in France at the moment and face masks are mandatory without exception in supermarkets even Mc Donald’s, we feel so much safer, covid cases are much lower as are the deaths, don’t be fooled by the UK government, they are going for herd immunity and a lot of people are happy to be taken in, that’s MHO.

Not necessarily the case, quite possibly timing differences that the Supply Chain problems have brought into sharp focus. 'Click & Collect' Orders, especially those for early timeslots are picked by the evening/overnight restock team. The Evening Store Restock HGVs typically start arriving from around 8pm, so if your order is picked at, say, 7:30pm, you may well miss out on an item that will have been replenished in the store the following morning when you arrive to buy the missing items.

Supermarkets have put their staff under pressure for quite a few years in a drive to cut costs, and the COVID staff sicknesses and social distancing/extra hygiene mean, despite the employment of other occupation furloughed staff, there isn't the time to 'pop back to the fruit & veg to see if the spuds have been refilled yet'.

NHS staff, quite rightly, have been recognised for their work in the pandemic; it is easy to forget the work that supermarket staff, cleaners and other front line workers undertake to keep services operational

Steve, I wasnt meaning to criticise the people involved at all. There are so many people who have put themselves at risk to keep things going and I'm very grateful. Apologies to everyone for the way I wrote that. I need to remind myself - write in haste, repent at leisure.

The substitute polices however are weird! I don't know if its the pickers that select the substitute or does the computer do that?

No worries, David. Although my stint at M&S was only a 6 week seasonal contract ['but apply again next year', which I did for 4 years! Something bizarre about being wished Merry Xmas on Xmas Eve and then told that's the end of your contract and to give back your security pass], the 'Trade safely and legally' rules were hammered home ad nauseam!

I think the picking alternatives are generated by algorithm, because we ordered a tin of mushrooms [stock cupboard emergency in case fresh mushrooms weren't available around the time of the UK Bog Roll Purchasing Crisis ...] and Asda provided a tin of potatoes. We also ordered a tin of fruit [more emergency provisions] but received a tin of vegetables on one occasion [can't remember the details but it caused a 'WTF' reaction!

For balance, at the peak of the Bog Roll crisis, about 3 weeks before the UK lockdown, we were shopping in Asda and asked an employee who was trying to do a 'Vulnerable Person' Shopping Order for some item or other. She was beyond harassed, and was trying to answer my query whilst telling another customer not to take stuff from the Shopping Order Trolley because 'It's no general produce, it's for a Vulnerbale Person, ya daftie'. I don't care how much [or little ...] that employee was being paid, I wouldn't have had her job for 3 times the money!

'Out of Date and mouldy food for sale in a supermarket' is a breach of Environmental Health Rules and something that supermarkets are almost paranoid about since it can result in a store closure, legal proceedings and consequent damage to the supermarket's reputation. At M&S it was hammered home under the Title of 'Trading Safekly and Legally' and all date expirING [not expired] food had to go straight into recyclable waste. Frozen food had to be transferred to the Store Retail Freezers OR Returned to the Warehouse Freezer within a maximum of 20 minutes [and the target was chased to get 15 minutes or under for extra safety].

Soap and water is accepted as being the most effective way of preventing COVID infection, but hand sanitiser is the recommended option when the tap is out of reach. Complacency in the face of Delta variant growth is mad, but, as you say, each to his own. Bizarre to be paranoid about mouldy food but relaxed about not sanitising whilst shopping for food that complies with the Environmental Health Regs, but hey ho.

Steve
Morning, hey Steve we aren't paranoid about mouldy food, have just seen it many times in Supermarkets hence we buy our fresh food elsewhere, the hand cleansing comment was our concern that every shop you go into has a Hand sanitiser station at the door most of them being Alcohol based, we don't think you should be smothering your hands with Alcohol removing your skins natural oils that's all.
