Sun sun sun here we come

(Which they also can't make...)
Couldn't agree more
Went out for an evening stroll and found that Lorca has the nearest thing to a high street that we have seen (no not boarded up shops like the uk) thankfully it's Sunday evening.
Reportedly the longest high street in spain @1,8kms.

Sat 22 Feb no driving today just a visit to the city and a stroll along the prom after lunch.
There is an electric bus that is called a 'tram' from the port to the city. No idea why it's called a tram but initially it was envisaged as a self guided vehicle that runs from overhead wires 'al la trolly bus' but the pantograph/ pickup was not deployed as far as I could see. The whole of that system looses €1.3m a year apparently.
IMG_20250222_130552.webp

Departure point at port.
IMG_20250222_110151.webp

Central market looks authentic but whole area was rebuilt in the not to distant past.
IMG_20250222_104907.webp

Spanish really do know how to do a fish stall
IMG_20250222_105958.webp

Detached bell tower of the cathedral, there's one of these at Bosbury UK but not quite so grand.
IMG_20250222_103914.webp

Sculpture in the open market square that depicts the historical people who developed the town. There's more on the other side but ones enough I think.

Not sure what the William Tell connect is
Sitting having a coffee (and a cake of course) when the woman begging sidles up asking for money. Now "no hablar Espanol" usually works but this time she asked in perfect English for some euros. I nearly succumbed!

Forgot the weather review so just to cheer you up.
Day started very overcast with rain threatening about 12° at 10am. Actually had a slight shower while we were in town(having a delicious bacon and egg croissant) but soon cleared up and we had a bit of cloudy sunshine later and 17° .
Weather couldn't decide what it was doing later during our afternoon perambulation. Started with a puffer jacket on and a cool wind then down to a tee shirt then back to the jacket all within an hour or so.

Sun 23 Feb 55mls in spotty rain upto Peniscole. 2700mls total.
Few more miles than it should have been as - busy talking and sailed past the autovia exit
The heavens opened last night when we were tucked up in the van but a fairly short lived thunder storm. Damp start to today but still long sleeved tee shirt weather.
We have rocked up at the parking lot just behind a big campsite which is quite near the beach.
Currently sitting in a cafe (just for a change it's tea and cakes) while we wait for the washing to finish then off for a spot of lunch.
It's clouded over again after a brief spell of sunshine but forecast looking good.

Best lunch we have had in Spain today at el canar. Sunday special 5 course and a drink for €25 a head. Best steak I've had in ages for main course tender and cooked to perfection.
It seems that the swamp across from our parking spot is of national importance with some endangered species. Hope the breeze continues and keeps the mozies away.

Needed a snooze after lunch and by the time we got going and walked over and up to the castle it was closing.
Sunshine all the way this afternoon 17° just right for a walk .

Mon 24 Feb 65mls 2765mls total - firstly to el perello that has a newish aire with facilities but not much of a view. Small town with a few bars but not a lot going for it that we could see. Then onwards to ginestar which I suppose is a big village down in the ebro valley. Lovely views from the aire over vineyards and orchards but no drinking water.
Was cold last night down by the swamp and forgot to put the heating on - insulation in this van leaves a lot to be desired. Perhaps that why it's called 'sunliving'.
Sunny start today and soon warmed up to 17° but as the day has worn on the cloud has thickened up to hazy sun.
Had a walk down to the river through the vines and fruit trees and back via the village centre to find a bar. Only 7k steps today not much distance covered but swmbo now has the cold (obviously no where near as bad as my man flu) - so not a bad effort.
IMG_20250224_144335.webp

Just about see the van on the far left.

Ginestar is a small little village  but maybe depends on with what you compare it to🙂
There's room only for 5 or 6 vans, so you've been lucky. Very near is Miravet, with a nice view to the river, and also a nice MH area.
If you want to stock with very good wine, you could get to El Masroig, another tiny village with a MH place close to the cellar.
Enjoy, this is a beautiful area(y)

Tue 25 Feb 85mls eventually arriving at a free carpark in Villanova i le geltru. 2850mls total. Very scenic drive so I'm told but very few straight bits untill after reus. Started off foggy down in the ebro valley and definitely jacket weather.
Called into torredembarra but the parkup was quite some way from town so tried to find somewhere to park. We spotted somewhere from a distance that looked like a carpark and it had vehicles on it but on closer inspection when we were past the point of no return it turned out to be full of craters from when (maybe) Franco bombed it during the civil war.
Next stop calafell down by the beach but absolutely nothing there but a nice flat carpark adjacent to the railway line which is being repaired.
Sun sun sun where's it gone 15° grey and overcast with a chance of rain. Comfortable enough for a short walk to town although we've done it again arriving just as the shops are closing. How do I managed it?
There's a great restaurant 'el quinze de septembre' just a few meters from our park up where we (obviously) had the menu which was excellent and in joint first position now and all for €20 a head.

It's chicken milanise although how you tell it isn't schnitzel I don't know and the salmon en croute was delicious.

It rained a bit late afternoon and I think it struggled to get above 15° but we managed to get a walk up to town later. It's a surprisingly big places and they are just getting it all set up for carnival which is this coming weekend.
Here's a tip for anybody travelling in Catalonia - don't use Google translate in Spanish it's useless. Thought I'd broken Google till I realised.

Wed 26 Feb 85mls 2935mls total firstly to Navarcles to a tiny aire where we replenished our water. Un fortunately the new aire is yet to open so we moved over to Vic. Nice spot with distance views to the snowcapped Pyrenees.
Thermometer was reading 7° when we started out and is now at 10° with overnight possibly down to 2°. Worse than the UK but electricity included in the €5 site fee so the small fan heater is coming out later. Wall to wall sunshine today and it feels like 20° just had to change into a tee shirt.
Off to the city later for a mooch around.

Fortified watch tower down at the harbour from yesterday.
IMG_20250226_172833.webp

Vic city hall or maybe regional council chamber.
IMG_20250226_164841.webp

There are some lovely old buildings in Vic centre.
Preparations underway for a gastronomy festival tomorrow celebrating the pig. Will sample the delights and report back.
Really surprised that this place is not more well known - I'd never heard of it before deciding to check it out.

Cold 3° this morning first thing (well 9:00) but full sun so it soon warmed up. Went for a longish (for us) walk 16K steps alongside the river. Expected it to be idyllic but disappointing and looked very polluted. Did see a couple of old bridges from the days of horse and carts.

For all you twitchers out there - what's this
IMG_20250227_122200.webp

I know it's a cormorant but what type?
When we got back into town the pig festival was well underway with hundreds troughing down and queues stretching across the square. Just couldn't be bothered so made do with a tuna and olive pie from the bakery which I consoled my self as being the healthiest option.

MichaelT That's an Australasian species so unlikely.
This one just seemed to have white around the neck and head.

28 Feb still at Vic. This really is a great aire with everything we want for €5. I'm sure there are others that offer great value for money with free services but I've never found one.
Very cold last night at 2° but with the heating running on the almost free electric we were comfortable. Brilliant blue sky early on but then some thickening cloud cover. It looked like we were going to get a soaking on our way back from town and there was a chilly wind cutting through my fleece but we made it back unscathed. Jolly hour at the launderette this afternoon but needs must.
IMG_20250228_114730.webp

The original Roman temple that stands in the area which used to be the Roman city but apart from this and a few walls nearby it's all gone no doubt built over using the robbed stonework.

Cathedral bell tower.
While looking for this in the labyrinth of cobbled allyways we discovered a really nice restaurant for our 'menu'. Rated 3rd in our extensive test results for best on our journey. Think we have decided that most €15 menus that we have tried don't quite live up to expectations but for an extra €5 or thereabouts you get a much better meal.

Sat 1 Mar 60mls to a smallholder's field near Vilassar de Mar. 2995 total.
What a difference a day makes €10 for a flat spot in a field with nothing else unless we want some well water. Needed to be sure of a parkup to match the tickets we booked for Barcelona so hay ho it is what it is. Just to reiterate what has been said many times on here make sure your water is full when you can.
Rain overnight but sunshine and 8° when we set off with blue skys. Got up to 16° later but totally overcast. Hopefully the rain will hold off.
Rushed off to catch the train and a metro ride to see goudi's sculpture park only to find someone had booked tickets to the palace he designed in the city. Just as well there are escalators that take you to the top of the hill or I might have been a little disgruntled.
Made it to the gaudi palace just in time for our ticketed time.
IMG_20250301_144215.webp

Looks impressive from the exterior (sorry photo not up to much) but the interior is something else.
IMG_20250301_150902.webp

How about this for a crapper! Almost worth doing a black tank conversion to have one of these in the van.
IMG_20250301_151224.webp

Now that's what you call chimney pots
IMG_20250301_153407.webp

Think this place used to be an umbrella shop back in the day.

Sun 2 Mar still in the field.
Chilly first thing warmed up with some patches of blue sky then very overcast with a cold wind.
Back into Barcelona after getting a new multi trip ticket. Yesterday bought what we thought was a 2 day ticket but turned out an 8 ride ticket for any public transport. How there was one trip left for 1 person is beyond explanation. If you end up in Barcelona investigate the travel ticket options there must be better options.
16000 steps today firstly around the city
IMG_20250302_124036.webp

Another of his master pieces
IMG_20250302_124403.webp

- then - wait for it - swmbo persuaded me that since we would never be coming back to Barcelona we should trek all the way up to guel park since someone got it wrong yesterday. Must be going soft in my old age.
IMG_20250302_150143.webp

IMG_20250302_150657.webp

As I said an experience never to be repeated.

Mon 3 Mar our last day in this field.
Tickets to visit the Sagrada Familia today at 13:00 so a lazy start then another train ride into town.
IMG_20250303_122126.webp

IMG_20250303_123009.webp

Front and back and the detail on the cast doors.
IMG_20250303_125447.webp

Inside is just as spectacular stuffed with religious iconography that not my thing but you can't help be say wow when you enter.
Patchy sun when we set off and a dry visit but the expected rain arrived on the way back. Very wet trudge back from the station and the final section of road is actually a concreted over river bed that had an inch or so of water running down it. But it was not like cold UK rain although we got pretty wet. Not too bad considering we have had 2 overnight rainstorms since we arrived in Spain. Looks like we are in for a few wet days as we make our way homewards.

Tue 4 Mar 50mls 3045 total. Firstly to have a mooch around Blanes then onwards to Caldes de Malavella for an overnight stop.
Needed to take care of the vans water situation which for €4 you can do at the area camper in Vilassar de Mar.
The big parking area in Blanes now has 2 ton limit but we found a spot nearby albeit a bit damp/muddy after yesterday's rain.
IMG_20250304_111804.webp

Almost had to buy some shoes but (un)fortunately not available in the right size.
Fortuitously just around the corner from where we parked we found a great menu place full of Catalans. So thanks to Blanes for closing the car park
IMG_20250304_134134.webp

Just one of the dishes. Won't bore you with endless photos but all very good. €16! Bargain.
Caldes de Malavella is an old Roman spa town with surprisingly well preserved remains.
IMG_20250304_163128.webp

Mainly because the baths were incorporated into the medieval castle they built over it.
IMG_20250304_162944.webp

Baths just inside this remaining bit of castle wall.
Back to presently warm sunny weather with a bit of wispy cloud now and then. But will it last?

Wed 5 Mar 45mls total 3090mls.
Off to see the ruins at L'Escala parked up in the carpark next to Lidl with everybody else.
Thought we needed some gas as the gauge was showing quarter full. Detoured onto the motorway only to find pump not working and then another detour to find a working one. The bl°°dy gauge is absolutely crap. Almost embarrassed to go and pay for 7 liters.
IMG_20250305_115104.webp

Can understand why looking at this the Greeks chose this spot to settle. But according to the museum interpretation this was an island in the middle of a swamp.
IMG_20250305_121737.webp

Most of the greek remains have been uncovered as here although the statue is a copy.
IMG_20250305_133655.webp

Part of the Roman city wall that surrounds the top of the hill, massive stone blocks surmounted by roman concrete from 100bc
Good job no one had thought of airated concrete in the hope of saving a few sesterce. A small area of the city has been excavated to date but it would take an army of archeologists a lifetime to do the rest.
IMG_20250305_135215.webp

Note the clouds gathering on the horizon.

Thu 6 Mar 140mls to Carcassonne after a couple of hours in Roses. 3230mls total.
Leisurely start today stocking up with our Spanish goodies to take home.
Spent a couple of hours in Roses wandering around and had a look at the exterior of the fort. It's had a lot of conservation work but tastefully done.
IMG_20250306_132420.webp

Had a few drops of rain on the way there then the sun put in an appearance for a while but by the time we were on the road it was thick clouds all the way. 15° for most of the day warmer at home in the UK.
We used the toll road all the way up from the border and decided when we paid that unless we are in a hurry we won't be using them again.

Fri 7 Mar 70mls total 3300.
Early start today for a walk up to the fortress from the motorhome stop over €14 a night.
What a fantastic place the fortress is and because it was early we got there before the tourist hords.
IMG_20250307_092638.webp

IMG_20250307_095335.webp

Two defensive walls and then the castle inside of that. Apparently it was besieged and only lasted 15 days before surrendering.
IMG_20250307_095054.webp

How about that for the end of a rainwater pipe.
Onwards with our wanderings. First stop Castres but we arrived when as with all french towns at lunch time everything was dead. I decidedly did not like driving the decent off the mountain into the town.
IMG_20250307_140248.webp

Some of the old houses along the river bank.
IMG_20250307_135720.webp

And a doorway for all you fans.
Fortunately the bakery was open for cakes.
Then a further few miles to Albi for an overnight in the carpark next to the cathedral.
Another nice city I had never heard of.
IMG_20250307_162121.webp

From the back of the van.
IMG_20250307_171203.webp

Medieval streets leading down to the river crossing.
IMG_20250307_171625.webp

And finally another door.
IMG_20250307_163314.webp

Slight drizzle to start the day then some rain coming across the mountains but the afternoon brightened up with scattered clouds and 17°.
