Suggestions please: Interesting stop-overs between Franco-Spanish mediterranean border and the Rhone (1 Viewer)

Don't usually do this, but planning a leisurely trip to the French alps in May from Cartagena in Spain.
Got loads of places to see meandering between home and Girona.
Once in the Rhone Valley we'll go through the Vercours (visited several times) & Chartreuse National Parks thence Albertville and points north and east

It's the bit in between, per title, - interesting towns, villages (historical, architectural, monumental, etc) preferably inland, A9 corridor, not the big conurbations.
We're birders so will be heading for Arles and the salt pans for a few days.
Suggestions, anyone, please ?
