Stopping driving off with the ECU connected

I created my own checklist card and had it laminated by my local Rymans stationery (other retailers are available)

Check lists for me - just in the process of making a few as recently bought a van after being without for 6 years.

What i can never understand is, for about £3 in parts, its easily possible to have an alarm go off if you turn the ignition on while the EHU is connected, but manufacturers who build vans for 10's of thousands of pounds cant be bothered to do it.
My Swift has such an alarm

Not a problem for us in our 2011 Autotrail. The only time I started the engine with the EHU still attached there was a loud beeping warning noise. I just thought all motorhomes had something similar but it seems not.

I always walk around the vehicle at least once before driving off. No gadgets or technology needed.
This is off topic sorry, but I just noticed your profile pic. Silfra by any chance? I did that dive last year and the daviðsgjá dive in the afternoon. Incredible place isn't it!

We learnt our lesson when leaving home at the start of a trip to Spain. Got about 35 miles down the road and started to hear a strange knocking sound when above 50mph. Turns out we`d pulled the socket away from the van leaving the lead behind at home! Frantic dash home for repairs, to rescue the EHU lead and to check the home wall socket. :blusher:
I now have a pair of lightweight (very bright) dayglow yellow gloves which sit on the stowed EHU lead. I put them on when uncoiling and connecting the lead. These gloves then go on the steering wheel. They serve a 3 fold purpose, 1) as a reminder, 2) my hands don`t get dirty when putting the lead away, and 3) the lead gets cleaned as it`s being coiled. :coolest:

I drape my hookup cable over the drivers wing mirror. When I remember!!

I always drape some or the lead over my wing mirror, so it's never happened to me in 10 years of motorhomeing.
I also have my check list to read before moving off. I really can't understand why some people have issues.
Ah, but what do you do when your EHU inlet is exactly 25metres from the EHU socket

As a HGV driver, I have a legal requirement to do walk round checks at the start and end of my shift. This has to be documented either in an app on the phone, or on a check sheet.

Because of this, I've gotten into the habit of doing the same in the van, starting at the drivers seat then round the vehicle back to the drivers seat. It's a full 360 check.

Then 200yds down the road the cutlery drawer flies open. 😖 ITS ALWAYS THE DAMN CUTLERY DRAWER

And when it's not the cutlery drawer, it's the fridge door!

Or when you forget the list

My bathroom door is usually the 50m stopcock ot the fridge being turned over

I walk around too, aircraft habit, but I have another way of ensuring no EHU lead left I NEVER PLUG IT IN, even on the odd site visit, no need.
Tell us more about the odd sites you visit! 😄

I'm still young enough not to need a laminated checklist 😂
I am quite surprised at how many things on my Moho I thought were standard kit when first bought it - aren't. Buzzer to say EHU still connected, auto retract sat dish, auto changeover of fridge/freezer, crash sensor on gas regulator so no need to turn off etc .

Interesting.. is there no other requirement to turn off the gas when driving?
I have always had the dream of bowling down the autoroute towards the sun, as other half fries bacon and eggs for breakast .. if you are right, at least one impediment is removed ..

Use the leccy hob

Done it twice when hooked up at home and once on a site. I now have a checklist that pops up on my media screen once ignition is turned on so that has put a stip to me messing up!

Don't think so if you have anti rupture hoses and the crash isolater, although the experts on here will know much better.

That would need some special seat belt to allow cooking brekkie on the hob whilst driving along

Yes, that's correct it's Silfra, a few years ago now. I decided to give up diving last year, but I've done some really enjoyable dives in great locations. Fantastic memories 👌
Cheers

I was thinking a rope tied round her waist, other end tied to the shower door?

I can see a big yellow wire coming out of my van before getting in, then I can see it when checking my mirrors before driving off, and theres also a red light on the panel in the van. If I still can drive off I shouldnt be driving!

KNWH I think this is a great idea. As someone else who can be somewhat busy thinking about higher matters... I need all the help I can get. People saying "why don't you just remember to..." isn't that helpful.

Hence:

Not a great print though, looks like I need to calibrate with that filament. The cut out at the bottom is so you can store it attached to the cable.
