Stopped by the police

This is a good scenario to be honest. Obviously we all want the police to be out there catching criminals, muggers, scumbags, etc etc...But, at the same time, there are a LOT of dodgy vehicles, drivers, out there, so the more checks the better.
I'm all for frequent stops, so long as there is a good reason for doing it, and not just a "money making" scheme.
I have been saying for years, that we NEVER see coppers out on the road these days, so good to hear that some are keeping a positive profile out there.

They are also checking caravans. Badly loaded they can and do cause accidents.

Plus, by targeting certain vehicle types other offences are detected. Tax, insurance, MOT, disco drivers, unlicensed drivers, red diesel etc.

I fully support this type of positive action.
Tax, insurance, mot will show on anpr so no need to stop and I guess red diesel wouldn’t be checked by police.

I stand corrected but are the ‘traffic’ police completely different ‘ branch ‘ than normal shire police ?
No. They are trained to operate within the traffic units but can respond to normal calls if they are in the area. Motorway units are very often a conglomeration of a few forces in how they operate but the officers are still accounted for within their own force.

Tax, insurance, mot will show on anpr so no need to stop and I guess red diesel wouldn’t be checked by police.
True. But on multi-agency operations there are Customs & Revenue, VOSA, LA waste checks, drugs squad, police checks on the vehicle, the occupants. etc
It's surprising what offences show up. Not all police vehicles have anpr.

All anpr shows is if the vehicle may have insurance....it doesn’t show if the person driving it is covered by that insurance policy nor if they have appropriate license or may have been drinking etc. ANPR can be a useful tool but nothing like a physical stop check.
Red diesel can be, and is, checked by police on behalf of DVSA.

Hope they nabbed a few cloned/stolen ones

Usually a multi agency operation with each looking after their own, including dipping for red diesel is appropriate
Is there any point checking for red diesel any more? A farmer recently told me it's now more expensive than normal diesel. I found it a bit hard to believe, but that's what he said..... Mind you, he was having a rant about the cost of everything......

Last time I got some red diesel it was about £1.20 ish a litre but that was a while ago! Still lot cheaper than white.

Significant changes recently as to who is allowed to use it and for what purpose so imagine checks being made to see if people are complying with new regs etc..

I cannot believe the price of red diesel, if that's correct....When I was a kid, many many years ago, I used to put the "odd" tank of red in my old van, and it was significantly cheaper....But, hey ho, that was the good old days......

Good to see the boys and girls in blue not wasting time and energy on assaults, burglaries, petty theft and making their presence felt in our towns and villages.
This along with fixed penalty "Offences" and speeding fines, these "Crimes" that are resolved with no police investigations are necessary to bring up the solved crime figures !

The maximum gross weight may be 3500 but empty it will weigh less than that. The difference is what you can put in it. Some motorhomes the difference is not enough to be useful though. Beware of anything a salesman tells you, their priority is making a sale.
Thanks that’s good to hear then. But how are you supposed to know how much stuff is ok and how much will take you over?

Some people take everything out then weigh it all back in again.

Some go to a weighbridge.

Some just guess.

Remember - usually the unladen weight does not include passengers, extra gas, water, diesel. Really best to go to a weighbridge.

Road safety is just as important.
Surely these checks could be carried out by Traffic "Officers" / Vosa, with a token Police presence, to process any offences, thereby not taking so many front-line Police away from their normal duties,
Or is that too simple ??

Too simple really.

Well if I’m ever burgled and there’s no coppers to attend to investigate then I’ll be content in the knowledge that they are weighing motorhomes somewhere .
A pathetic waste of scarce resources. 💡
So it's OK to leave folk in campers to break the law?

Fantastic.

Well if you are burgled and your Motorhome is stolen, I hope there are no coppers in the area stopping motorhomes to “weigh them” then.
That really would be a pathetic waste of resources.

On these many police programs on tv it’s amazing how much different crime they pick up by just stopping a vehicle, drugs, burglary, and all manner of criminal activity…😎
Exactly this.

2 great reasons to do stuff like this;
Catch dangerous, uninsured, no mot and other motoring offences.
Quite often leads to other criminal offences.

Ah yes that must be why they focus on stopping vehicles. They must detect so much crime by doing that, they need to police nothing else.

Various options, you could weigh a collection of must have items. Then gradually increase or decrease as the figures dictate.
Alternatively, load the van with everything you will need and then weigh the whole thing on a weigh bridge. That does run the risk of having to make a return trip home either overweight, or minus some thing's. Don't forget, passengers and pets are also part of your payload, as is water, fuel, add on items like, gas tanks, and roll out awnings, you'll soon get the hang of it.

Is a ”fixed penalty offence” really a crime and recorded as a detected crime? Times have obviously changed!
I have stopped vehicles for checks and found victims of murder, body parts, a kidnapped child, firearms, amounts of Class A drugs and even the occasional poached deer. Those that like to scoff and mock the police doing their job obviously prefer to encourage crime rather than allow them to attempt to prevent it.

At least there not sitting behind a desk somewhere…. Everybody says we need to see more police out and about, seems they can’t win in your eyes….😎

A overloaded mh , is a danger to the public, I am all for it checking everything
thats not strictly true i can upgrade my van to 4tons but would then have to pay 120 a day to leave and enter london yes im probably over my3.5 ton limit but provided its under 4 there is no way its dangerous

Are we to assume you would be equally pissed off if you were upside down in the outside lane and the traffic bobby was busy at Tesco with a shoplifter?
