Stirling Moss RIP

True story... when stationed at RAFBiggin Hill I was on the way to London Movements Sqn to service their vehicle jacks with a colleague and a red Audi Quattro flew past us at warp speed in the London traffic.. I said “who the f*** does he think he is... Stirling Moss?”.. sure enough, at the next set of lights Stirling was giving us daggers for pointing and laughing at him.

Randomly we narrowly avoided a settee that fell off a small trailer right in front of us a short time later...

As Many have said, Stirling will be a loss to the "cause". I never met him, but back in the 80`s, used to see Dennis Jenkinson, who co drove the Mille Milga with him when they won. He used to ride to the "Foresters" Bike night`s on an old pre-war BMW. He must have been in his 70`s then, and another quiet gent. Older than Moss, had he lived he would have been 100 next year (I think).

I had the pleasure of meeting him at a company event at Silverstone many years ago, he was a true gent as many have said, happy to chat about motor racing and life in general, he will live on in the memories of the nation I think. RIP Sir Stirling.

Believe he won the Mille Miglia in an epic drive in an open car mostly in the rain.
Beaten to the World Formula 1 Championship by one point by Mike Hawthorn, who arguably was not as good an all round driver and certainly not as likeable a man.
RIP another British icon.

Epic indeed, possibly his greatest drive. 1000 miles at speeds of up to 170mph through the Italian countryside (not a racetrack), he and Jenkinson won, at an average speed of 99mph, by 30mins and beat other great drivers, including Fangio. Those stats are almost inconceivable. Blind corners and humps required perfect trust between driver and navigator. Imagine having your breakfast in London at 7.15am, driving to Aberdeen and being back to London for a late tea (and you can't use a motorway!)

A terrific ambassador for motorsport & a true gent.
Sadly in my humble opinion he isn't a great of driving, many have come close to world championships but, are forgotten.
Perhaps if he'd driven a few non British cars he might have achieved his goal?
However he was a truly gifted driver & survived the most dangerous period in F1 history, what an achievement.

RIP Sir Stirling Moss.

Hate to be pedantic but I don't believe he ever raced in F1. He drove in the World Motor Racing Championship. Apart from the major accident he had at Goodwood the other serious injury came when he broke both his ankles when walked into a lift (in his house I believe) only to find the lift wasn't there and he fell to the bottom of the shaft.

I can’t let ‘he isn’t a great of driving’ go unchallenged I’m afraid. Look at the eulogies being paid internationally by those who should know. Watch him race and look at the times he set against others. You say if they don’t win the championship they are forgotten. Well he didn’t and he’s never been forgotten. Had he not been so sporting and defended Hawthorn after the Portuguese GP, he would have won that year.
