Day 36 Friday 26th of February
Up at 8.30 due to a planned breakfast at 9 in the camp restaurant, well I did it again indulged too much in the alcohol I have a bad head, we were having a great send off last night and the plan was for just me and Sue to get the last bus at 10.40 so we could get an earlyish night before a long drive tomorrow, we started saying our good byes at about 10.15 and by the time Sue had finished saying her goodbyes we had missed the last bus, so back to the bar it was until about 1.30 and the plan was to set off early in the morning and get a full days driving in before dusk, well that’s not going to happen now. I had a large breakfast to soak some up beer this is it lol.
We decided to wait until dinner time to set off which gave us a bit more time for last minute stuff like getting some more wine to take home lol.
We did eventually set off at 12.00 driving on the toll road for ease we drove 600 km stopping driving at 18.15 before it got dark, we stayed in a layby on the AP15 at Olite, the motorway signs were showing possibility of snow Friday and the weekend. We are sat in the camper its hammering it down with rain, its blowing a gale and its freezing, I can’t believe the change, in bed for 9.30 and the plan is up at 7 so we can set off at first light, I haven’t taken the dog out its too wet and cold if he needs to go in the night I’m sure he will let me know.
Day 37 Saturday 27th of February
Dog woke me up at 6.45 which is pretty good timing so I took him out to a light covering of snow/sleet, we stayed up and cooked breakfast waiting for the light to appear, we set off at 8am with a gale and sleet, it was blowing us all over and every mile towards the mountains it got worse we were down to 45 mph due to the high winds and I’ve never seen as many snow ploughs in one place, it appear at one bit that every third vehicle was a snow plough,
I really didn’t like the viaducts with all the wind I had the windscreen wipers on full as we traversed over the mountains we went through several tunnels and then one very long one and as we came out the other side, NO snow and the winds had slowed down only a little though. So the mountain that we passed under had stopped the terrible weather that we were experiencing on the other side. As we travelled further away from the mountains the weather did improve slightly but it never stopped raining all day and the winds came and went, we pulled on an Aire at 18.30 after traveling 800 km somewhere north of Le Mans.
I’ve just been in touch with our daughter at home to check the ferry crossings for tomorrow, wow don’t they go up on a weekend, 14.30 tomorrow £140 Calais to Dover, it stays the same all day up to 12.35 in the morning when it drops to £70, I don’t fancy hanging about in Calais for 10 hours especially after driving 1400 km in 2 day to get home quicker only to arrive in Dover at 3 in the morning and then either pull up on Dover sea front till morning and hit all the traffic, so I asked her to search on the internet for the Eurostar crossings, I did expect it to be dearer but it turned out cheaper at £135 for 3pm, Sue has never been on the tunnel so tunnel it is and we arrive in England half an hour before we set off and will be home by about 8 o’clock Sunday night.
We have travelled 1800km so far and not seen any traffic problems at all, we go on the first motorway in England and this is what happened
Home safe and well at 7.30pm Sunday night. after traveling approx. 2225 km
I will be putting all the toll and diesel prices on for information later.
