My other half is stranded at a campsite near Flamborough, North Yorkshire.
The starter motor on our 2007 Peugeot Boxer-based Autocruise motorhome has packed in.
Nothing unusual in that, given the age of the moho, other than we had a new replacement item fitted in January of this year, when we got stranded near Ashford whilst waiting for our chunnel connection. That's 8 months ago. Have the Chinese infiltrated the starter motor market now?

Yes. Most starters on the shelf will be cheap, short life Chinese crap.

Check what voltage you are getting to it, and you may find something simple, like the exciter wire terminal loose, which is very common.

Has anyone done proper tests to prove it's dead? Could just be a loose connection...
Yes - LV insurance arranged for a road recovery mechanic to come and have a look. When I told him the symptoms and that the starter motor was only 8 months old he said he new what it was straight away - a broken earth strap twixt engine and gearbox. A common Peugeot fault obviously, as he had quite a stock of new earth straps on board. Alas, the earth strap was in fine fettle and after some basic electrical testing (starter motor earthed, live to motor when ignition key turned on) he concluded that the starter motor was, indeed, goosed.
A local mobile mechanic has had a look-see today and has ordered another new starter motor - he is hoping he can fit it from above the engine as the moho is parked up on a grass site which is not conducive to jacking 3.5 tonnes of Peugeot up high and safe enough to access it from below. Alternative is to get it towed onto a nearby hardstanding, or if all else fails, get it recovered to our local garage.

As above - recovery guy tested the voltage at the starter motor live terminal and it was well within operating range. Engine battery is steady at 12.4v.
