I’ve just purchased our first MH, it’s a Merc Sprinter 312D on 2000 plate with Automatic box, we’ve done lots of work on her to bring her up to standard, however, the automatic gears are either faulty or I’m not using them properly, for example, I can only select 4th from Park when starting off, it’ll kick down to lower gears and go back upto 4th when speed is achieved, it’ll select 1-4 ok when engine is stationary and not running but as soon as I start her and put it in Park I can only select 4th, is fourth “Drive”in more modern vehicles? A friend suggested the “Selector” needs adjusting, thing is, I don’t want to be confronted with a steep hill when I cannot select 1st or 2nd Gear to make the climb without damaging the box, hope I’ve made sense🙈 any help appreciated,Tia

Is this a true auto, with torque converter, or a Sprintshift, with a robotic clutch? We have a 2005 Frankia based on a Sprinter 416, with Sprintshift. Any engine problems that invoke 'limp home mode' tend to stop the Sprintshift from working.

If it’s a 312D it will be a true auto with gearstick on the floor not Sprintshift.

Usually bulletproof and so reliable

Do you have a “D” drive option on the selector?
A picture would help

I haven’t noticed a ‘D so I’ll take a video and some pics tomorrow and place them here for you to see, thanks Landy Andy😉

Sorry for the later than planned reply, I’ve found out how the gear box actually works, there’s a button on the gear stick which I assumed was for all gear selection however, for automatic gears you use the button then select gears but for 1/2/3 gears you simply push the gear stick into position without using the button!!
So happy now as I assumed there was an issue then to find out that there’s nothing wrong with it!
Incidentally, I shopped around for recon auto box for these 312D’s and the cheapest was £1500 + vat and Delivery🥴
Anyway, thanks for your concern pal👌
