Spare Wheel

Looking on the emovis site it says if you are travelling in Spain you need to carry a spare wheel ? My van only has an inflator with puncture repair gunk .
Where would I put a spare wheel in a van that is not built for one ?

I think there was an amendment along the lines of 'or an alternative system'. Inflator and gunk counts. Pretty much no cars carry a spare now.

Yes you can have the gunk instead but it's pretty useless if you have a blow out. I would never use a Motorhome without a spare well worth making room for one.

I bought a spare and strapped it in the garage. Far easier to get to than dragging it from under the van. Its not the same make or tread pattern, but is better than relying on the gunk or being stuck waiting for a repair or new tyre over a weekend.

A spare wheel and tyre was the first thing I bought for our motorhome. Our previous motorhome had one fitted underneath. Is that an option?

I bought a spare and strapped it in the garage. Far easier to get to than dragging it from under the van. Its not the same make or tread pattern, but is better than relying on the gunk or being stuck waiting for a repair or new tyre over a weekend.

Be careful in Europe, they won’t let you mix tyres on the same axle, they have to be identical so carrying a spare tyre of a different type won’t help you

To clarify. If it’s a complete spare wheel that’s ok (as it’s a temporary spare, often with a speed restriction). Tyre fitters, in my experience, won’t fit non matching tyres as it’s against the law.

Technically if you had a blowout and you fitted a spare that didn't match, you'd be breaking the law in many EU countries. In reality, the chance of you being caught is very small and the chance of them caring is tiny. I'd not worry about it and sort it when I got a chance... probably when I got home.

I've not had to use a tyre in about the last 100,000 miles. At the moment, I'm not carrying a spare for my short trips abroad. If I go travelling again, I might fit a spare as there is space under the rear of my van. But I'd have to buy the carrier and a 16" wheel.

Hi.
Strap/hang it on a back door,with a proper fitting ( Or not. )....If you have doors. Sods law...You will never need one if you have one. Some people (Not me ) just carry a " Tyre " of the right size to reduce weight.

Im not worried. I have directional tyres fitted so if i had a spare that was the same as the others it would only fit one side correctly. The spare is designed for the van and the correct wight load. As you say chances of it being an issue are slim to zero.

I'm getting a new set including the spare next week. I currently have a recent unused steel spare. Being close to my MPTLM, I can't decide whether to save weight and just have the tyre, balanced against the inability to fit it myself at the roadside.

My last motorhome I just kept it under the bed. Current one has a dedicated bracket in the garage (in the most inconvenient position to remove it and facing the wall so pressure can't be checked)

My last HYmer I had the factory fitted spare, the was just a cheap van tyre & didn't match the tyres on the van and where they mounted the bracket you had to lift the wheel up onto it, a right pain. Current van I bought a wheel and fitted a matching tyre, strapped inside the gagage on the back wall resting on the floor so easy to get in and out.

We ordered new spare with the M/home, it sits in the M/H garage. Never had to use one so far in nearly 15 years motorhoming but did once with the caravan in 30 years with one of them. Changed to Michelin all season tyre 2/3 years ago, including spare. Its a peace of mind thing, as the weight we are carrying almost always ends up in a proper blowout.

Was heading down to Folkestone for a Chunnel last year and the tyre alarm came on.

Was going to miss the tunnel if I hung around. Thankfully I managed to swing into a tyre place and £25 later was sorted with a repair after a screw went in.

I have a full size spare so was confident if I couldn’t get it fixed I could just carry on. I don’t have a matching spare but it’s to get me out of trouble, it isn’t to leave on for weeks so I am quite happy to chance it.

Same. Full size spare alloy wheel, in the garage, pressure checked regularly. The idea of being stuck on an Autostrada with a hole in the sidewall and looking hopelessly at a tin of gunk, terrifies me.

It is thirty kilos of annoying extra weight, but I wouldn't drive down to even the diesel pumps without it.

I bought a spare and a carry bag for it to live in. I lay it flat on the floor while travelling and in the cab when pitched up.
No garage and not enough room to under sling it.
I got caught out with a blowout and subsequent 5 hour wait for a flat bed row truck. Never again!

Should be ok as long as you haven't had any modifications underneath the van. It goes just behind the rear axle. All the mounting holes are already there. Quite an easy DIY fit.

Just be aware - the standard carrier is designed for a steel wheel. If you get an alloy spare you need an additional mounting plate and securing nuts, which are quite expensive. I made that mistake. No point in a matching alloy when the majority of the time it's hidden under the van.

Additionally, under the van it'll pick up all the crud and road salt which will eventually degrade the rim, alloy or steel.
Case in point, our eldest has this monster Jeep thing, whilst cleaning the chassis he took the spare alloy wheel off, and it was just about fubbared with the alloy turning to a white corrosion.
We have a complete spare 15" metal, same tyre as the rest. It lives in the garage area in a purpose made handbag, it can be a pain sometimes, but like insurance it's there if needed , do you feel lucky?
