Spare wheel & tyre or not?

When I changed my tyres last year, I bought an additional one so that, at least, I have a matching one. Weight tends always to be an issue so it's a compromise on a full spare.
THANK YOU ALL! It's a no-brainer when reading all of your experiences. I'll start shopping tomorrow for a wheel and tyre!
5 week trip starting on 20 Dec.
Wishing you all safe and happy holidays
:giggle:

My spare tyre weighs 14kg I think. 215/70 15”

I will need to find a 225/75 R16 and a 6j 16" rim.
We are rated 4250kg so no issue with weight (if I stick to diet) ha..

t turned up 21 days later with a new wheel fitted and a cost of £1367.
Hope you forced the council /highways to pay? Why would it return with a new wheel & tyre ? Leased? I'd have told them where the bill was being sent
But it wouldn't have cost me approximately 7 hours of my life sat at the roadside and service station. Which of course is "priceless"
& added the above to the small claims court bill
Because otherwise you wouldn't have a spare anymore?
plenty available on line , scrap yard. etc
Do check your spare before going away though. Ours was completely flat, as the valve had perished and snapped. It has been under the van unused for a number of years. Needed a trip to the tyre depot to get a new valve fitted.
No I check it every time I wash the van + all the times I work on it.

I used to carry 2 spares, years ago.Lost one going down the side of the Guadiana river in Portugal.
Try getting a 385/65R22,5 11r 245 around there.

Look on evilbay or Facebook marketplace, there’s always people selling the old wheels after they have upgraded.

Just check what the wheel comes off for an idea of the weight rating.

Hello all
We've recently bought a 2014 Carthago i142 but it did not come with a spare. When shopping to buy the van, we noticed a lot of them did not have a spare.
Do you all carry one or use the gloop canister get-you-home type of thing?
Many thanks
never rely on tyre gloop
peace of mind
carry a spare

It returned with a new tyre and wheel because the wheel was destroyed by the pot hole? Not sure i understand what you are saying? Not leased I owned it.

In relation to your comment about getting the council to pay for it, sadly you've been away to long.
I took pictures, I done everything that you can to persue a case including small claims court on principle.. I lost. The council are extremely well protected against these claims now.

It was a major road and I was forced to provide pictures dangerously obtained. I had dash cam footage too. I had measurements of the size of the pothole.

I lost because the council proved that the road was inspected the week prior and there was no pot hole. I lost the case under GDPR when requesting their training records of those carrying out the inspection as I thought they must be blind.

The law now makes it practically impossible to be compensated because the roads are so bad councils would go bankrupt

Hi, as someone with back problems and struggles to align a tyre this would be really helpful. Problem is I don't know what they are called or where to buy them. Could you advise please - thanks
There are loads on ebay and amazon just search for

WHEEL FITTING REMOVAL ALIGNMENT TOOL

I was in the no camp relying on breakdown recovery for a prompt serve. There is no way I could change on myself these days. In July I was in France with out TOAD and got a proper puncture. Hole as big as a fist. The squirty stuff did not come out of the boot. I was recovered promptly and the car was taken to a Ford main dealer garage. Our TOAD is a bog standard Fiat 500. It took until Friday (recovery day Sunday) to have 2 new tyres fitted to the front. In France you have to have both tyres on the same axle being identical. I then went and got a spare wheel for both the TOAD and motorhome. I did not see the point on sitting around for 6 days waiting for tyres.
Do you take your Fiat abroad with you if so do you tow it or trailer it

I have a set of those puncture repair kits for my motorbikes, the ones that use a sort of sticky string that you insert with a tool, rotate and pull back out. That leaves a plug of the string in the hole.

I wonder if that would do for a simple puncture in a Moho tyre rather than use the goo supplied with the Moho puncture kit?

I had a puncture repaired in Holland some years ago using the push in from outside plug method. It worked and lasted until I replaced the worn out tyre but I'm not sure they're legal to use in the UK.

Definitely carry a spare. I have had 3 blow outs in the past 21 years having covered over 120,000 miles in that time and each and every time there wasn't enough tyre left to use as a jigsaw never mind using a can of gunk. Two of those blow outs were on the same day, first just north of Alencon, the Michelin garage in Alencon said 10 days to replace but luckily found a small tyre depot just south which fitted a new tyre. I left there and did 5 miles before the second one blew so went back and got another fitted. All 3 tyres blew much the same way, they were Michelin and the outer bead blew out. The one that blew in the UK my mate who was a manager of a tyre depot said he had never seen one go like it before so sent it back to Michelin who replaced it free of charge. All tyres were pretty new and inflated to the recommended pressures. After that I changed to another make and never had any more problems over the next 100,000 miles.

What a great idea 👍🏼. Found them on Amazon but there are various sizes and pitches. What's correct, M12, M14, 1.25 or 1.5 pitch?
Thanks
