Spanish change in law Re passing cyclists 22/3/22

That has never been law.
Thankfully, given the idiotic places they used to put them. Not far from my house there is a shared footpath and cycle path, by a school that at least twice a day is so full of people you would have to walk with the bike. Much safer to just use the road.

Of course you then get the angry drivers who are incensed you aren’t using the unusable cycle path…..

Birmingham is finally seeing the light, lots of investment in new cycle infrastructure that is physically separate from the road.

Laws to protect vulnerable users such as cyclists and pedestrians are a positive thing.

So you didnt't feel the need to pull over and not hold up traffic....
Cyclists ARE the traffic !

Remember Cyclists (and walkers, horse riders etc) have a RIGHT to use the public road.
Motorised vehicles require a temporary licence, for which they pay every year, to enable them to also have shared use the road.

Far to many motorised vehicle drivers seem to think they have a right over other (mostly non vehicle) road users, hence the recent publication of the hierarchy of road users. It's not a rule change, simply reminding some drivers what has always been the case

Basically pedestrians at the top of the list, and us motorhome drivers, second from bottom.

If I am holding up traffic in my MH (and I'm no slouch) I pull over and let traffic pass.......

As should cyclists.. it says so in the Highway Code.

It's because most cycle lanes consist of a sign saying you can use the pavement. If you're cycling at 20mph+, this pavement, which is full of kids, reversing cars and side turnings, is not safe for you or the other pavement users and it is better to mix it with the cars.
If you have ever been to the city of Bruges in in Belgium you will find the Pavements are split into 2 different colours one half grey the other red , and signed very clearly which side is for Pedestrians and which is cyclists if that can work as it does for an old city can't see why it can't anywhere else

The red lane should be for Pedestrians...to match their faces or because the blood doesn't show having been hit by a bike...🤨😃🇪🇦👍

I notice Claire Ambler is complaining about a cycleway in Norfolk, but lives in Skipton. What is that about? It doesn’t even affect her. If it’s cost only, why not spend time campaigning for multinational companies to pay their fair share into our tax system.

It might work elsewhere but cycle lanes are often strewn with broken glass, overhanging branches and brambles, wheely bins and moronic drivers who think it is acceptable to park on them. And don't mention folk who walk their dogs on retractable leads and get upset when Fifi has to stop wondering everywhere as a cyclist approaches. That is if they take any notice of the bells used to warn them of the arrival of the cyclist. And kids.... The ones that are allowed to wobble all over the pavement as they learn to walk.... Bloomin' liabilities they are. And the folk who dawdle everywhere, irrespective of the colour of the path

It is a shame that so muxh effort is spent telling cyclists where they can cycle rather than reminding drivers how to drive safely.

It would be good of the bikes had bells, the lycra lot expect you to hear them approaching at high speed and very few seem to have bells fitted. Walking along the tow path back to your boat cal be a very dangerous walk.

Mine do. So do the rest of the bikes in our household. Friends have them as well. We use the bells too. Not all cyclists are tw@s. I guess it is a bit like indicators on cars though ... most cars have them fitted but not every driver knows how too use them. That is another thing mentioned in the Highway Code that drivers need reminding about.

Ahhh, Rule 169
It applies to all vehicles that are moving slower than the general traffic, to pull over when it is safe to do so.
This rule had agricultural and horse drawn vehicles in mind when it was originally added.

Was it a Brit Helen Ariel 😜

I’ve had Spanish cars routinely stay behind me for perhaps half a mile or more on narrow bendy roads in Galicia where there was a solid white centre line, hence my query above. We’d ride from the campsite to Muros regularly and found this to be the case too often to be @n exception.

Also regularly had them let me cross junctions on cycle lanes before they turned or cross the junction on foot when we lived in Los Alcazares, like our new HW Code says we must do from today.

The UK has been in the dark ages Re safety on the highway compared to many in Europe I feel. Spain seem to be tackling it head on with a vengeance 😊
You may say that, but if you review accident statistics for the UK, France and d Spain, the UK has far fewer accidents!

You are soooooo out of date!!!! Our truly wonderful (😳😳) Government have given sweeping new powers to cyclists to the point that even if there is a cycle way they don’t have to use it !!!!
In other words, no change at all.

Overall yes, but as I understand it, our record when it comes to vulnerable road users is very average.

I thought it was law to have a bell or warning device also mudguards , we always ring our bike bells when approaching people from behind

Not a legal requirement to have a bell or mudguards.

You seem angry for some reason?

If the cycle lanes are so great and as a user of a car you are so inconvenienced, you could always cycle instead of taking the car?
You haven't answered the question though? why are they so wide when no one uses them.? In terms of cost it must be in excess of a milliona cyclist at a guess?
Laws to protect vulnerable users such as cyclists and pedestrians are a positive thing.
They also allow them to wander around with absolute impunity caring nothing for anyone but themselves , so learning nothing.

They also only allow you to cross the roads at the designated crossing points,& not anywhere you fancy like in the Uk, & when challenged & told to stop in a language not english they have no qualms pulling a gun on an 11 year old.

You seem to be venting here. I hope that you feel better.

It ought to be , lots of things favour cyclists , no rod tax , trucks have have side guards and rear under run bars at a big cost add on ( in my day around £ 1000 per truck ) to protect cyclists , where in theory cycles should have guards .🤔

What vehicles pay road tax?
Do mudguards stop cyclists being crushed by lorries?

Once cycles were used by most as a means of transport.
Today most cycles seem to be used for sport or extreme exercise - speed being more important than consideration for others ....... or themselves.
Most car drivers just see their vehicles as transport....

This seems to have a written from a different planet. What is the weather like there?

Most pay
When sideguard fitment law was brought out, it was the idea to protect cyclist , cats or dogs were not mentioned !!

I live on planet REAL 2022 - hardly any cyclists compared with car users.....

...... and the weather doesn't matter - if you drive a car:giggle:

Well, as a visitor to planet earth, it would seem prudent to learn a little more about cyclists and vehicle drivers here; it seems quite different to PLANET 2022.

As LesW says. No drivers pay road tax.

How do cats and dogs come into the discussion?

I live and work in Derby, you could count the number of cyclists passing each day on a busy main road on one hand - verses thousands of vehicles.

So who should take priority?

Cycling is dangerous - only safe if no cars....
