Hi,

We’re considering getting the toilet in our new MH converted to a SOG system. The dealer can do it for £250 and we’re keen to remove the need to use chemicals in the cassette. Well also be travelling around Europe for the best part of 12 months so am I right in thinking it’s easier to dispose of black water with no chemicals in it?

Thanks in advance fellow Funsters!

This is what can happen if you can not get rid of the gas,???View attachment 329463
I have 1st hand experience. Many years ago on our way home with the caravan, loo was empty & clean, my daughter was desperate and asked if she could use it. A couple of weeks later I was giving the bowl a clean forgotten she had used it, certainly didn't know she had done a No.2 in it. This was before they fitted a pressure release valve, I opened the flap & the volcano erupted I was in the sh*it, well my face was covered in it.

I don't see why you couldn't, could just use a bit of gaffa tape to cover the hole you would need to make to refill.

I notice that Thetford say to change the filter every 4 weeks where as with a SOG it's annually. Not surprising as the SOG filter holds at least 4 times the amount of charcoal. I change my SOG one 2 to 3 times a year.
Yes every 4 weeks! I found that out after 3 years with this van!

Old thread alert!

I'm all for no chemicals but ....... the SOG fan only moves the st*nk elsewhere? Also what happens when you empty the cassette? The contents haven't been discussed, what's it like emptying it? Surely it st*nks when emptying and cleaning?

That's so you know exactly what you're emptying. Had SOG systems since 2007, never bothered me in the least.

We have one and I would happily buy another. Works out cheaper than buying the chemicals. I have to be honest and say the filter is well overdue a change so don’t open the toilet when someone is nearby.

Emptying it means it does stink! But I have been covered in faeces and worse bodily fluids many times so doesn’t bother me.

I would definitely go for it.

I am curious how you can spend so much time in Europe post Brexit ?

I was looking at the SOG for my Thetford C400 cassette. The flexi pipe from the fan (in the door) fixes into the floor, just in front of the cassette.
We have bought another C400 as we mostly wild camp and wanted to be able to stay away from sites longer especially abroad.

I have looked at this and can't see how the SOG extracts any fumes from the cassette ? the original cassette has a SOG label stuck to the top behind the handle but can't see any other mods, now I think I may need to do something to the new cassette to make it work, but don't know what.

Does anyone know ?

Thanks, we're new to this and I'd never heard of SOG until yesterday :D

This post is from September 2019. We've been away since July. No sog and it's fine if we empty every 2 or 3 days.

A roof vent is the best option keeps the stink clear of everyone, unless the winds in the wrong direct and your roof light is open then you get your own back (no filter).

No problem emptying don't notice it, no worse than smelly chemicals.

I take it you have the round green filter for the floor vent.
Our last Hymer had a bench loo with a SOG it vented the cassette through Thetford own vent when you push the cassette in it opens the vent. With the cassette out the square plate in the base of the housing should have hole in it with a foam washer on top that opens the vent.

If its like that you don't need to do anything to the new cassette.

Also it's easy to refill the green filters I used to and change every few months. I've now converted my current van to a roof vent.

No, it has a flexible corrugated tube that is fixed to the filter/fan in the door, when I open the door I undo the tube from a hole in the floor (there is a charcoal filter in the door).
I can't figure out how it works, how it draws air through the cassette ? I'll post some pictures tomorrow.

Not sure you have to replace thetford every 4 weeks. I think their manuals may have become confused. A link on the cartridge detail suggests it will "lasts an average season (+/- 4 weeks continuous use)"
Since when has an average season been +/- 4 weeks?
I think it means the average season period itself with a variation of +/- 4 weeks continuous use, eg if the average season is 16 weeks, then it's could be up to 20 weeks or down to 12 weeks.

Just like emptying out any bucket of sh1t really, no difference at all, at least the smell is natural and there's no half putrefied chem/No1 smell going on...

We had a sog in our full time van - useful as we often couldn’t get hold of chemicals. Two disadvantages-
1 the fan comes on when you open the flap - very noisy at night.
2 much smellier when emptying, although we used bio washing up liquid to help with this.
We haven‘t had a SOG in any van since.

C400 = Type "D" SOG, the only mod on the cassette i can see is that you need seal up the access hole at the back (top) of the cassette itself, looks like you get a self adhesive sticker in the installation kit so should be easy to do on an additional cassette.

It is worth it, you don’t get that horrible chemical smell when you go!
We have a SOG and in hot weather use a splash of Bio clothes wash liquid.
We also use a small bin lined with scented Nappy bag for the loo paper-emptied every day. That way the cassette can last us 3 maybe 4 days which can be a bonus!
It’s surprising how much room paper takes up in a cassette & no the bin doesn’t smell bad!
More than half the world puts the paper in a bin even when the toilet flushes. Indeed it doesn't smell, it just takes a mental adjustment.

A friend claims the factory fitted SOG in his AT pvc was floor vented but only into the void under the floor, couldn't understand why it was so smelly. There's not much void in a pvc floor.

SOG should not be sniffed at o_O
It keeps the interior sweet
We put (probably less) chemicals in as well, so little saved there
Using chemicals would reduce/remove the need to (fit or) change filters

Thetford filters pack of 8 for £20 at Caravan and Motorhome Club. At that price its hardly worth trying to improvise and refill an existing filter?

No good for a SOG, a SOG floor outlet filter is £24 you can refill it for about £3.
