Just checked their site but they don't have stock and say up to 3 weeks which would of been ok for me to wait and save another £30

Alternative replacement SOG fan

There was a discussion last month about the cost of the fans at £120 ish, which seem to fail on a regular basis. I didn’t take too much notice but then ours broke when we were away in Norfolk last week. I wasn’t going to pay £120 for a fan! My alternative fix was to ask my son-in-law to 3D...

Mine failed yesterday so this is an interesting thread.

I seem to recall someone selling various 3D printed parts on MHF. With a broken SOG motor to work from perhaps this is an opportunity to help us out?

They seem to be CRAP quality lol
 
OK guys -just got mine going again. When it failed the last time it was after a winter layup and same again this time. What I think happens is that the shaft siezes in the motor. The solution was to remove it and with a bright torch shine down the outlet until you can see the the fan blades and with a bit of wire turn the fan blade. It felt stiff to start with but after a few revolutions starts to free up. I've had it running for 15 minutes now and it's still fine.

I think that with the seizure, the motor doesn't have enough power to overcome the resistance. May be worth a try. Not being a motor expert it might be that speed is of the essence because if you try to leave the power on for too long and the fan can't turn, the fine windings in the motor might then eventually burn it out.

That tiny little fan you originally linked is unlikely to be able to do the job looking at it. Even cheap computer fans give the specs usually in cfm even if they skip the static pressure.

Agreed. But the Thetford one (that fits under the cassstte and under the filter cartridge) is minute and no more than 40mm. In free air it's hard to detect any draught from it. But it works just fine. This is the one I'm discussing as fitted to mine:

Well my kit ordered arrived yesterday so the old one removed and the new one fitted today and backing working again. Because I bought the kit I’ve now got a spare micro switch, tubing etc.

Well done Travelworld even if it was expensive!
 
Fitted mine today, took 15mins and no idea why they said to remove the top part of the sog from the roof as that didn't do anything. 4 screws to remove panel in cupboard and undo from pipe and refit new one.
I will test that theory around fan being stuck on the old one when I get a few mins to see if it will work.
Also fitted the waste tank cap as I had a spare fresh tank cap which are the same aside from different colour. The old one was split pretty bad and literally fell out when I went to undo it.
Can't believe how much these caps are now to purchase nearly £50 plus postage for 1 cap.

The top part slides within the seal so if you pull it upwards it would give easier access to the fan.

Didn't seem to move when I tried so didn't want to force it. Luckily there was enough space underneath to move it down. All in all it was quite a simple task. I thought for a moment it wasn't working but forgot the power works off of the water supply and not from the 12v button so had to fill it up before testing as if I turn on the water it then tries to load the pump.
 
Had a look at the faulty sog fan today and sure enough with 12v attached and a slight nudge of the fan blade and now it works again. Tested a few times and it comes on straight away now so that's pretty strange. Must be getting stuck when not being used for a few months over winter. Will keep it as a spare as can't come to throw it out now it seems to be working
 
Just tripped over this and it reminded me of this sog fan thread.

This is probably majorly overkill, but I am guessing some may find it amusing to joke about... Well I bet it couldn't handle my jobbies :p

First item is a ducted fan that can operate at 12v and costs £20 or there abouts.

 
Just thought I would resurrect this after I ended up replacing the fan at huge cost! (temporary user atm - originally Roger20 above)

Pulling it apart is fairly simple. The motor body seems fairly lightly glued or attached to the outlet moulding. There is no point in trying to excavate the blue resin because it achieves nothing and eventually gets down to the wires.

The point of separating the two parts is to see if you can lubricate the motor shaft which seems to be the primary cause of failure, with seizure after a period of time (6 years in my case). Just spraying with WD40 or a similar lubricant didn't seem to achieve much. However removing the fan blade does let you drizzle some light oil on to the motor shaft and after doing this the motor now seems to work well, albeit after a bit of whining to begin with.

The fan blades are very minimally attached to the centre and as you can see a couple broke off so it's essential that you lever the central core from behind without actually putting any pressure on the blades. This might require some ingenuity!

At around £100 for a replacement it might be worth a go?

If you can send me all the bits in the picture I can have a go at making you a new fan.
 
My Thetford fan was very noisy, so went to get a replacement from a dealer, cost was about £55 for the fan.

I got one off ebay for £2.80

I 3D printed my own components for my Adria and installed two computer fans, even SWMS is pleased with the lack of odours in the bathroom, she still insists on adding a small amount of 'toilet stuff' every now and again though !!

I bet it was the same size running at 5,000 rpm, so doing half the job, but not the correct 12,000 rpm, 14 CFM as your original fan for your £2.80.

Possibly, but when I got home from my travels I did buy another, much better one for £9, it's that powerful it sucks your bum onto the seat.
