Hi. May seem a daft question but our new to us motorhome has a satellite dish. Bought a small 12v freesat box off ebay. Opened it and the connection was a shaver type 2 pin plug which connects into a plug. Contacted seller asking if there was an adapter from 2 pin to usb but he told me that it was a 12v box and it would work in plug socket. Never heard of this before so be grateful if anyone could throw some light on this before we go away tomorrow! Cheers. Daf

Make and model of box would help. If it needs 12 volt you won’t get that from a usb socket. There should be a sticker on the box with operating voltage,

A shaver plug is normally AC mains voltage.

A cigarette type socket is 12 volts DC.

USB is normally 5 volts (although USB C can go quite a bit higher).

I'm guessing you have a Freesat box that's got a mains plug. But there's a transformer on that cable to take it down to 12v? Then maybe a barrel connector on the Freesat box for 12v?

The lead maybe something the previous owner has made up, just cut the plug of and fit whatever plug you either standard cigarette type or the smaller hella type.
When I bought my Humax freesat box I had to make a 12 volt lead up.

Our Humax box was never happy working from the vans 12v. Worked much better from the inverter.

It was probably designed to expect a pretty consistent 12v from its power supply. The 12v a van supplies can be very variable. As the sun comes out, the solar might cause the voltage to rise to over 14v, but it could dip below 12v when the pump kicks in. You can get boxes that help to regulate the 12v for sensitive devices... Or just use an inverter.

Mine works ok just off the van 12volt with no stabiliser

The transformer with 2 with pins is intended to go into the adapter to make it UK 3 pin and for use with the mains.
If you dont have a seperate 12v lead supplied with the receiver then you need something like this..
Or use the adapter / transformer with a small inverter.

Cheers all. If I can’t find an adapter for the two pin will rewire to a cigarette socket👍🏼

I suspect it is not a shaver plug, but a standard continental plug which is slightly different pin spacing. We had a dvd player the same.

Doesn’t the 3 pin fit the 2 plug

The 2 pin power supply you have in the picture should clip into the 3 pin black adapter. There should be a screw to fasten it and keep it held together. This is for mains use.. and the small power supply will convert the 230v AC mains down to 12v to go into the socket on the receiver..
If you plan to use just 12v then you need to forget the above items and you need something like i posted above.

Ideally they should have supplied a new 3 pin power supply or have the adapter pre-fitted. Plus a 12v lead would have helped.
Guess they are just saving the pennies...

That isn't going to work.
As it stands it will ONLY work on mains voltage.
Cutting off the plug and fitting a cig lighter socket means it's getting 12v dc, not 230v ac.
Theres 2 options.... Cut off the 2 pin plug and fit a UK 3 pin but it will only work on hookup.
Or
Remove the whole lead and make a lead with the same plug as in the back of the box and a 12v plug on the other end to suit what 12v sockets you have.

Is there not an adapter i can get that will take the two pin plug and convert into a usb/cigarette lighter? Not very technical sorry!

No, the 2 pin plug is mains voltage... 230v ac
Putting on a 12v dc adaptor simply won't work.
Cig socket is only 12v and a USB socket is 5v

As you're going away tomorrow its a bit later to be modifying the box so you won't have sat TV.

Surely cutting the plug off and replacing it with a 13amp plug would put 230v direct to the box which is designed for 12v

Without looking at the sticker on the 240V adapter are we absolutely sure that this is a 12V supply into the satellite box?

Pretty certain, well definatly..
It is powered by the supplied power supply, albeit with a continental 2 pin plug and a mains adapter.. 230vAC to 12vDV
All thats needed is the power lead that i posted earlier in the thread and the job is done..
