So How Bad Are Silent Genny's? Honest Advice Appreciated

I'm interested in this subject also. Really interested.

I've got 620w of solar, 120a battery charger and soon to have 260a of LiFePo4. The same Winston cells as you Wissel

With the plan to add another 260a when able.

I want a generator to charge when solar isn't working. Hopefully with my 120a beast it will only run for a very short time....

I've been looking at the hyundai one. I've witnessed the Honda 1kw running and it was alot quieter that I was expecting.

Do they do a 2kw silent diesel generator? I'd run one of those on a red diesel heating oil mix

Funny thing about Generators, I`m on my second (a Clarke 2.2Kw). Only really use it ever on "festival" type sites, when we are setting up, and tearing down mainly, and ocasionally to re-charge a mobilty scooter and a "power pack". Got used to having them with the R-V`s. As for "noise" it somehow don`t bother me. I could sleep with it running. But then I had 20 years near enough living alongside Machinery day and night!. it was only when it stopped and the ship blacked out that you got worried!.

i lug around our honda eu20i and have to use it on occasions to charge the mobility scooters. I top up the van batteries at the same time. Not hugely noisy, but it is directional. as in from the exhaust side is noisier and even then the sound does not travel far

I keep a 5 ltr of petrol in the car and half of that will run the generator 4 hours

gennys are for emergency's , usually off grid & for me in the north of scotland , to charge up batteries , I bought a new Honda eu 650 ( £ 760 ) a good few years back ( knackered within 2 years) , I now have the one below ( recommended to me by funster who has owned one for years ) very quiet ,light , small & only £160 delivered , great insurance policy , I could run it next to my MH wheels & barely know it’s there ,

last time I needed to use my geni the MH’S around me were happy I had one running so they could also plug in too ? , as I said only used as a necessity not a luxury

I wonder how many comments re generator noise come from people who have actually been affected by the noise or just jumped on the anti generator band wagon? Not everyone has room for sufficient solar and occasionally need the added support of a genny
Live and let live i say

Ahem, I think that’s an oxymoron! :giggler:

but if we did get say, snowed in in Scotland in the middle of Feb and couldn't move for a week, we could fire the genny up for a few hours a day and it wouldn't be an issue.
Seriously I would have thought that if that happened you’d be the only one there so fill your boots...

but if I was in a situation and stuck and I needed power I would run it and apologise to near neighbours if necessary..

I was at a rally where a good Honda gennie got nicked during the night, even though it was hidden. Take care.

Think I'm leaning towards getting a cheap one. Maybe a Lidl special or something similar as likely I'll ever need to use it.

I'll carry a chain to attach to van, but if it did get nicked it wouldn't be the end of the world.

We have used iSILER cooktop with medium to heavy-duty cast iron skillets for stew, steaks, and anything in between. We also use it to boil water, soup in a 4-gallon pot... Even at max power 1800 watts, the cord is not hot when in use, so it is a safety device to have in the house. I have done a test for boiling 500ml water only need less than 3 minutes. easy to use and cleaning. The best part that I like is it an easy to move then I can choose cooking outside sometimes.

I've had a Clarke IG 950 generator for many years

When required, it easily recharges my leisure battery and charges other equipment - it's pure sine wave, so can be used for electronic devices

I use it mainly at classic motorcycle events, so noise is not so much an issue. That said it is reasonably quiet and I consider myself a responsible generator user

Once at a classic motorcycle show, I put the gennie on whilst having lunch in my moho, after a while, I spotted a couple in a nearby van were sitting outside having their lunch , I spoke to them to make sure my generator wasn't disturbing them - their reply 'what generator'

IMO, as mentioned above, many moaners about generators probably base their experience on other's social media postings (including those on this site) rather than their own experience - in the same way some on here post derogatory comments about the younger generation, without actually having any first hand experience of them (except their grandchildren who are perfect in every way, obviously 🙂)

For balance I should say, that some of the earlier generators were horribly noisy & smoky and some user's don't give flying fig about others - their music/tv/kids/dogs probably make more noise than their generators anyway 🙂

So, if you consider yourself a responsible person, get a generator & use it responsibly

PS the only bad thing that has been said to me about owning a generator was in reply to my first proper introductory post on this forum, when someone commented that 'someone should shove it up my a*s*'
Well all I can say is why would anyone want to do that to my cute little bottom? 🙂

We have a Honda 2.0 gas genny for emergencies and are considerate guys, if I was cold with no light I would apologise to immediate campers any fuss after that, get a life!
Try parking near an RV you will not complain again!

Most RV's these days who are connected with this site - RVOC- have a rake of Solar fitted not to mention large battery banks, some have removed the genny's & filled the space with batteries too.
We still have our 7.5 kw genny on board but seldom use it as most of the room is covered with solar with a bank of Trojan batteries.
Not all RV's are the same.

Don't forget that I'd get bugged by the noise and probably sneak up and turn off anybody's Genny after 10 pm so you may aswell have solar 😀
