Smuggling corned beef

Uuuurrrggghhh.

Don't knock it before trying it. My wife and most others with me declined the sample. The only other person who tried it also loved the taste but still failed to persuade anyone else to try it.

Ah not such a softy, my fav veg.. Sprouts and curly kale. Love corned beef, marmite and faggots. But not pickled onions dipped in chocolate. :Eeek: don't forget I was born in West Cornforth (doggie to you peasants lol)

As far as I am concerned corn-beef is one of the essential 5 a day !!

As a by the by, at a boot sale type thing in Beni last year someone was flogging tins of corn-beef like they were going out of fashion !

That is cheap Corned Beef,,nearly double that in our Lidl,Aldi and B & M,,Think £1.80 is the best i have seen,,Mind you thats half the price of Spain but with brandy at 7 euros and gin at 4.50 euros a bottle it leaves me plenty of spare cash for food,,BUSBY:xsmile::xsmile:
corned beef is about 1.45 in our local asda etc .
best not buy beer and spirits in uk.
save a few shillings here and a few shillings there .then buy some sweets or perhaps a m,bike or another toy to play with.

Man up and use Bovril not the mamby-pamby poor man's veggie alternative.

As I don't drink tea or coffee the only hot drink I was offered in hospital was Bovril, or as the Croatian HCA called it "Buffalo". I was hooked. Then was told I was not allowed it as too much sodium :(. The tea/coffee etc came from a machine that had no hot water only mode so the herb and fruit infusions I had taken in were useless. Rough if you don't drink caffeine drinks cos you are Mormon I said and got a blank look. I'm not Mormon but wonder what they would do if there was an objection on religious grounds.

If you want eye watering prices in Spain, have a look at tinned salmon.

We take tinned goods with us as emergency supplies but usually eat local fresh produce as we travel. Generally we shop every other day. I thought most people did this but maybe we are even more unusual than I realised. :) :)

I take enough food to get me through France (you can keep yer muskles;)) I then usually shop at one of the main Spanish supermarket chains on Saturday eve, meat is always at a great price so freeze it for the following week.

In the style of Rolf Harris......"can you tell where I'm from yet?";)

We take nowt and bring nowt back. After over fifty years of travelling hither and yon it works for us. Simple really and saves so much time and hassle.

Amongst other booze, I brought 100 bottles of Pata Negra tinto [Mercadona 10€/4] back to UK for a party. Having done a great deal of research (y) on wines, esp reds, in UK - I worked in two studios where both my bosses bought wines at Sothebys/Christies - I reckoned that this Pata Negra was a £8/£9 bottle in Tescbury. Saving: £550. If my pals had bought Lidl's £4 Cab Sauv - in my view the cheapest drinkable wine in UK - the saving would still have been £150.

My hostess gave a bottle of the Pata Negra to a chap staying on their CCC SL who declined to move off to avoid the din. He was ecstatic - loved it. He asked if he could buy more. We sold him a 4-pack for .... £25. He was delighted.

The bad news is that Pata Negra is now €10.50/4! Robbery! The good news is that my fave charcuterie shop in Mercado Central, VLC, sells a very slurpable red for €1.90/bottle.

The trick with buying wine to bring back to UK is to buy boxes. No point carting loads of glass about. Easier to stash. No risk of breakage. You're not going to get £10/bottle quality but for 8€/3L you will get UK equiv £6/£7 a bottle quality v.d.t. such as Roche Mazet's cab sauv or merlot. I haven't come across a box of Spanish red worth consideration.

May I offer a genuine delight. Messing about with a chocolate fountain I tried dipping in a pickled onion which to my lasting surprise was delicious.
I’ve not tried that but Years ago I enjoyed Garlic ice cream - chopped garlic atop vanilla ice cream.
Mind you, I was very pregnant at the time........

They would spend millions and fall over themselves to accommodate it and probably insist that everyone else only drank decaffeinated drinks too so those who had requested it didn’t feel marginalised.

And tuna in Greece. We always take a large number of tins of tuna with us.

Strangely enough several people were advised to cut out caffeine - but they were still offered tea and coffee !!! I had a discussion with the specialist about it and he checked the hot drinks machine and came back to me to confirm there was actually an issue.

In a Previous Life...I was in the Merchant Navy....(yes we did actually have one ) and one Regular port was Vigo....I had a contact there who owned a 'Sombrero' shop, and I would exchange 'Kellogs Cornflakes' for real hats.....Cornflakes were VERY expensive then in Spain, and Much Sought after by the 'Brit-Community'

Due to an oversight by the wife we have now run out of corned beef but due to my diligence we still have an abundant supply of spam and baked beans, luckily corned beef is available locally at an almost reasonable price:)

We eat locally sourced food most of the time honest! but a little comfort food is needed now and again:)
