Following on from one smoke vapes likely banning it would be interesting to know if Funsters still smoke fags or not.
From my part, me and the missus stopped 40 years ago, so it’s a No from me.
Phil upmerizla.

I smoked briefly in my teens and twenties, then gave it up. My wiser other half has never smoked.

I think breathing in the London smogs probably did as much harm as smoking.

This is why I said everyone is different above. I went from between 6-14 pints a night every night for 10+ years and wouldn't dream of skipping a night. Smoking as many as 80 a day.

I can stop drinking dead easy. Smoking has been a major fight with many failures before I finally succeeded (so far). Since I went fulltiming I now go weeks without a beer and when I do fancy one will drink 1 can and end up leaving half the 2nd can when I am on my own. I can still neck 10 pints in a night when in company though :D Then not touch the stuff for weeks.

Anyway, I say all this just to point out that addiction is a personal thing in my opinion and what one person finds hard another finds easy. A method that works for one won't work for the next person. And a system to help will not help everyone.
We need to leave as many avenues open as possible and with as little friction as possible.

I had my first big test of giving up smoking the other day. Stood in an industrial unit with all the doors closed and the owners had been in their working on his own smoking like a chimney. The place reeked of smoke and it hung in the air. He lit one up while talking to me and I sooooooooo wanted one the entire 2 hours I was in there :) I resisted the urge to blag one off him.
I found giving up smoking so much harder than giving up drinking.

As to smoking never given up

Niether me or swmbo ever started
As to drinking stopped twice each after 4 days in hospital. Not drunk for 5 years now.
Gromett is right in that we have to deal with our addictions in our own way.
I was glad when my son took up smoking because it was his way of comming off weed. He now vapes as required to help control his illness, luckily he is now able to survive without the chemical coshh of anti psychotics. We are lucky in the Uk with a NHS whatever state its in. In The US many people with psycosis self medicate with heroin as its cheaper than medical care, and of course theres no joined up thinking when someone presents with both needs.

Thankfully neither Mrs mikebeaches nor I have ever been smokers. :giggle:
Ditto both of us. Apart from a couple to try it out in late teens. Crass stupidity from me as I was a chronic asthmatic throughout childhood. Always been grateful that I never got hooked watching those trying to give it up.

Smoked 20 a day with the odd year off til 8 years ago when working out the wife could retire if I gave up fags, sky sports and an unneeded 2nd car and still have the same disposable income. It meant she could babysit the grandchildren prior to school enabling daughters to work.
I went vaporising and use it as a dummy but on very low levels. Costs about 200 quid a year. But I have a smoke of one cigarette for the past 4 months just after having read all my emails at the start of a shift. So 3.5 fags a week for 8.5 months a year. (And I go without if our team smoker is off or at the other campus)

Started smoking at about 13 as I was working Saturdays and could afford it, had a child at the age of 21 and she couldn't stand the smell on me so I quit in 1986, started occasional smoking while working on the second severn crossing but soon packed that in. I have to shut the windows if someone is smoking in the car in front! I just don't understand vaping all these weird flavours though.

I used to buy 200 a week and then sometimes a couple of extra packets but convinced myself I only smoked 20 a day. Maths not my strong point 🤔
Gave up at 9.30am on 6 January 1993. Used the full course of patches which worked for me.
Nicotine said to be one of the most addictive substances.
Good luck to anyone who is trying to kick the habit.

I have never smoked but did have a packet of Consulate (menthol) cig's so when at the pictures my mate and I could offer the girls we were sitting behind a cigarette as a ice breaker and start chatting to them :giggle: oh to be 16 again.
I also remember a tobacco cubicle in Victoria street Derby where you could buy just one or five cig's at a time and they sold singular ones called Joy sticks that were about 6" long.

My mum smoked all her life, 20 plus a day lived to 85 with no associated problems.

The wife started smoking at twelve years old coming from a family of heavy smokers. 20 years ago she was suffering from one bought of bronchitis after another also if we travelled by air she would pick up an lung infection within a couple of days after, we have given up on air travel now.
It was a real struggle for her to give up, the nicotine gum was the main help but it took two years to wean herself of that :giggle:
She has had almost twenty years free from chest infections etc' that is until covid, she had a bad infection which left her with a bad cough and breathing difficulties, now diagnosed with COPD mild early stages and manageable thank goodness.
The consultant asked about her smoking history which was approximately 20 a day for 30 years.
He told us that they consider 10 a day for 10 years to be a contributing cause of COPD. His explanation is that the damage was done all those years ago but your lungs are more than adequate to deal with it until your later years when an infection or other illness affects your respiratory system.
All I can say after that is please just get out there and have FUN

Sorry for the long post :giggle:

Both my parents smoked at least 40 a day, they used to collect Embassy tokens, I hated the smell of fags so stopped in my bedroom if I wasn’t out playing, parents thought I was anti social 😵‍💫
I was the one that would shift tables in a restaurant if someone lit up whilst we were eating, or worse leave the restaurant and let the smokers pay our bill.

I have never smoked, partly because of the cancer link, which became known in the early/mid 60s, and also because I was too tight to waste my money. Angela smoked occasionally in her teens, but not since.

My Mum and Dad smoked all their lives. Dad died of a smoking related illness at 66 years old, much too young. Mum kept on smoking until she died of natural causes at the ripe old age of 91.

I think bus drivers used to get a raw deal, just before stepping onto the bus, smokers taking the last drag and exhaling on entry.when I did smoke I always sat downstairs I couldn't handle the smoke with all the windows shut 🥴

Never gave it up, just haven't had a fag (or anything else) since about 1987.

My mother smoked menthol cigarettes on the advice of a Dr. This was in the 60s when she went to see him because she had a cough and he told her she needed to smoke menthol. She didn't smoke before that but followed Dr's advice.
I quit 28 years ago when Mrs was expecting the first daughter. Mrs gave up a few years before that. Neither of us was big smokers. We went through 20 a week between us. When she stopped I would buy a packet every 2-3 weeks.
Couldn't afford to smoke now.
Mrs drank when we were younger but she gave up at 20. I have never partaken as my step father who was a small quiet man became a monster when he had a few beers. Used to kick shit out of me when I was 5. And I always said I wouldn't drink, never have.

My mum used to chain smoke b&h, repainting the ceiling and walls every year just seemed the norm 🤷‍♂️
Everybody smoked everywhere I went, at age 11 when I moved up to big school I thought I would give it a go..dont think I smoked for a full week.
I soon found that in the 70s and living in a very small village, I was the errand boy for the family from a young age and was buying 200 b&h from the shop without any questions which didnt seem to be the same for my new mates. I went from smoking fags to selling them in singles at school to support my drag racing.
Never smoked again....now as for alcohol 🤣🤣🤦‍♂️

OK. It’s looking like around 90% of Funsters have stopped smoking.. That’s really good to know.
Phil upmepipe.
Pipe, you hardly ever see them now.
If you ignore the fact that people who have stopped are much more likely to respond than people who still smoke. So I suppose it's time to pipe down. :giggle:
