Sky Glass ,any good ?

Thanks for all the comments . Very interesting. I haven’t cancelled yet but may do after I’ve had a good look at the reviews ( something I should have done before ordering 😂).
Just to confirm this is for the house not the motorhome . The smallest Tv sky do is 44 “

That’s why I’m waiting for the puck version to become available (not to be confused with the multi-room pucks).

In previous threads on Motorhome usage, it was expected that the Sky Glass’ epg, etc. will have a bigger data overhead than Firestick type devices.
A big enough load to make them impractical.

Ive no actual practical idea on that though 🤔👀
Or info on the puck.

And lots of Data

Yes, but no different to the IPTV referred to as an alternative elsewhere in this thread nor to the various TV apps/firestick that folks use.

The only way to avoid consuming data is to use a satellite dish - and folks think they’ve had their day; perhaps not.

Agreed, but l still use Sattelite abroad as first choice and Firestick etc last to minimise data usage.

Sky glass is to me a gimmick. I don't understand why I want what is possibly an inferior TV just to have what is effectively a Smart TV that uses Sky's embedded programme guide compared to say a smart TV from LG that has the apps for Netflix, Amazon and all the others. I don't get what is so superior of glass over the wide choice of Samsung, LG, Sony and all sorts of others. So perhaps you have some energy savings of the Sky Q or other PVR box not running. All Sky glass is doing is being an integrated streaming thing. What I want is a PVR so I can record and download in advance and then zap through those adverts. I'll stick with Sky Q, and the basic signature TV with the Netflix HD add on.

I use a 'normal' TV in the MoHo a 21" Avtex connects via terrestrial TV, has a UDB stick for pre saved films, a CD slot and use apple TV compatible with a myriad of other streaming devices. A dedicated TV from one broadcaster...no thank you. At Home we use a Phillips Ambilight TV (screen is manufactured by LG), the ambilight can also connect to the lounge Phillips Hue which is great for creating a Cinema or theatre atmosphere although if connected to an action film it gets a bit freaky as the lights change as quickly and in context with the action. We have chosen not to use the apps on the TV but do use the Apple TV and a Media server for all streamed content. Why would people pay Sky for a TV that locks you in?

Good decision kannon fodder, we regret sky glass loved our q

Like you said, habits. I had a Sky box for many years that was used quite a lot. I dropped for a BT YouView box to reduce costs a few years ago. Then went entirely Freeview because we just weren't recording anything. We've got an aerial on the house, but since I tidied up the TV shelves, I accidentally left it disconnected and didn't notice for months.

Everything we watch now is streamed YouTube, iPlayer, Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc. Sky know this. It's cheaper and lower risk for them to steam stuff on demand than launch satellites and support expensive set top boxes that takes them more than a year to recoup their costs. Broadcast TV is dying.
This. It’s just expensive IPTV but Sky know it’ll cost them much less to operate in the future.
If you are a law abiding citizen, this is for you.
For the rest of 58 million of us, it isn’t.

I assume if you go for a Sky Glass set up it is like the Sky Q set up if you stop paying they can ask you to return the equipment as you never own it. So no TV.

Tv is purchased separately so you would own it but if you stopped the sky Glass subscription I imagine the Tv features would be fairly limited .

The only thing thats good about the system is the actual tv, its a nice bit of kit.
The system itself is clunky and a backward step, nuts

But very cheap for them to operate moving forwards. They need to do it because this market rarely sleeps.
Don’t be surprised that within 5 years, all IPTV streaming sites become the big players and companies like Sky will offer packages to these outfits to allow them to monetise what is already happening out there.
Streaming will eventually reset the rip off world of popular sports like football etc.

My son in law was excited by the launch of the Sky glass tv, he ordered one but his excitement soon turned to disappointment.
He returned it after a couple of weeks.
The sound quality came nowhere near his surround sound system, and it would appear that sky launched it before all the bugs had been ironed out, using feedback from customers to do their research & development.

Nothing new there. I was a very early adopter (first week) of their Sky Q service all those years ago and quite frankly, they should have paid me for the service development I had to do for them. I did end up with around three years of free service on Q due to all the issues!

You must have a finite period left with that system.
Sky will soon not need to maintain any satellite uplink stations - like the one at Chilworth.
Or hire space on satellites like Astra.
When other broadcasters see how Sky get on then also make the move away from that transmission method, what is there left to receive on a satellite STB? 🤔

Its a matter of still using what's available as l have stated l use the Firestick and other via my iPad or Mac.When you are away for months Data can be extremely costly.

I worked for Sky for 13 years as a installations engineer and this came out just after I left end of last year. What I’ve read and seen I would stay away and just keep to a basic box setup.

The TVs are expensive and the one major downfall is you cannot take it with you say Motorhome or caravan as it needs a solid internet connection and it will chew up your data quickly.

With basic tv HD or even SkyQ at least you can take the STB with you and a dish setup and your away.

Me, I have SkyQ and I take the box with me, easy.
