Should I use a broker to sell my MH

Steve 6644......

It varies from dealer to dealer to be honest.
I charge £3000 + Vat, but within that, the van gets dropped off, we handle everything. We also do a full handover and don't expect the old owner to do it!
Most people are fine selling privately but now with their are so many scams on the go, its getting easier that ever to get caught out.

Can I ask what price you got and what MHD charged?
Marquis offered us high £16Ks on trade (Gulp - I think because it was too old for them to worry with the faff), but I was keen, and was sure, that the first number should really be a 2! MHD were confident they could get £20K and they advertised at £23.5K from memory. Basically they confirmed to me that I would get £20K with them guaranteed - barring a drama or no-interest scenario - and that is what they delivered. I was not told what they actually sold it for, and guess they have to take a view as we all do when selling. If the buyer got them to £22K they've still got a 10% cut, but they did a great advertising job with photos on Autotrader and eBay as well as their own site, showed people round and took them for a test drive, made sure the money was 'sound' and we weren't in a scam, and came and met everyone for a final handover when the new buyers came to pick up the Rapido (including meeting them from the station). Watched the money going into my bank account on my 'phone too!

For me it was definitely worth it, not least because having cash in the pocket suddenly made a new deal with Marquis, on a very nice Burstner we wanted, go from completely daft figures, and really a no-go, to "That's very do-able, Sir!". I think everyone was a winner!

We too sold our MH through Motor home depot and as well as the positives you’ve already read which I would totally agree with they also can take a trade in from the buyer which made our sale a breeze.
Motor home depot were brilliant 👍🏽

I am interested to know what they do with the trade-in.

For Simon

How is the VAT calculated in your arrangement? Is it a straight % of your fee, or does the value of the vehicle have to be taken into account as it is when you sell as a dealer rather than a broker?

Geoff

Hi Geoff, I think if the trade in is a good machine they sell it on but if there not interested they have traders who give them a price.

Good experience selling through Motorhomedepot ✔️ Would recommend giving them a go.

I've begun the sale process by advertising with Autotrader and straight away I had an enquiry from "Motorhome Depot" saying they are interested in selling my van for me. Apparently they act in the same capacity as an estate agent but so far no commission rate has been disclosed. I imagine the financial side of things is concluded on the appraisal valuation. As opposed to me selling privately a broker has the advantage of offering finance and part exchange and of course a secure sale. I can't see a problem with using them apart from taking a financial hit. Just wondered if anyone on here has had dealings with these guys, your advice as always would be appreciated
In the current market I would assume that it is sold by now ? ;)

I’m trying to get the best price I can for our VW Campervan, having just put down a deposit on new Globecar Summit Prime 540 yesterday - exciting times! Until I saw this thread a few weeks ago I’d not heard what brokers can do in this field and since then I’ve been scouring the web for dealers who would either buy outright of broker on my behalf. I have since found a small VW Camper specialist local to me who has offered brokerage, suggesting a reassuringly high selling price and offering reasonably low commission. I’ve tentatively agreed to pass the van over to him next Monday, but before I do I want to make sure I’m not being taken for a ride. The company checks out ok in Companies House, and they’ve said all the right things about insurance while the van is in their possession (it will be on their forecourt, not at home), however are there any things I ought to be careful of?

The only dealings we had with them put us off MHD for life and that was just trying to buy one.
They whack on what was a couple of grand then, don't know how much it would be now and they DO NOT offer any warranty to the buyer, they are just a broker.
At least with a dealership you get a warranty for the extra money.....The MHD don't even make sure the steering wheel turns and no traders insurance for test drives.

Having said all this the individual agents are just that, individuals, so the knowledge & service will vary outside the points I have made.

MHD was my first port of call and I have to say I was disappointed with their offer and a surprisingly negative view of our van which hasn’t been the cases with others I’ve contacted.

That's another thing they will do, knock your price down to justify the price they advertise it for.

You make it sound like you have sold vans before lol!
I once had a customer ring me on a Saturday night to tell me they didn't have any toilet paper in the van and what should they do..........
They even got upset when I said after 6 Stella's on a Saturday night I couldn't jump in the car to drop some off to them!

I absolutely love the public  ;)

should have sent a taxi

I took up Simon's offer to put my Auto Sleepers on his forecourt and it sold.

Initially Simon worked for Howards but then moved to Alan Kerr Motorhomes and he took my MH with him. It sold at the end of October with the deal being concluded on the day of lockdown #2. I was quite surprised given the time of year. The money I received was as agreed initially with Simon so I was happy.

The process was very easy; they washed it and gave it a habitation check and put the 12 months warranty on. I didn't get involved with any time wasters and all I had to do was drive it down to Simon. Also there is no comeback on me.

I had made enquiries with MHD but they expected me to prepare the vehicle for sale and be available for viewings as it was stored in a storage yard. In effect all they were offering was to advertise it and wouldn't fix the price.

All in all a very good experience with Simon and Alan Kerr Motorhomes.
