We are picking up our new van on Friday and I'm pretty sure I read on this brill site that the dealer should include a hook up cable by EU law. Even though we are handing over a small fortune the dealer is charging us extra for this :(. Can anyone remember the EU link please? Thanks

There taking a lot of money if thay don't throw in a new EHU lead and co detector cancel the order and go sumware else
Surprising what will materialize you could chance your arm and try to get leveling ramps to ;)
You don't ask you don't get

Got the EHU, gas, ramps, hose and a screen thrown in, along with a few other bits

Time to do the deal is when you're buying, not collecting

I can understand a dealer not leaving the original cable on H&S grounds when selling on a used van but there's no reason not to give you a brand new one which has happened with both my vans.

Reading this had reminded me that we didn't get a cable when we bought this van a year ago. Shall I go back and ask for it?
We already have 2 though from the previous swap.
Has come in handy in some Aires too.
They did swap our gaslow over for us though.

Which dealer did you purchase from?

What's a few quid for a hook up cable in the grand scheme of things, just enjoy your new van. Good luck today and let us know how you get on.

I think you'd find it a bit of a problem buying a brand new Westfalia privately.
Perhaps brand new but then I'd never buy a brand new van or a car purely for the initial depreciation. The fact I was paying around £50k for a brand new van and a £26 cable wasnt included would just irritate that wound more

Having been in dozens of 2nd hand vans in the last couple of weeks I can confirm that dealers vary from Great to tight. Some vans traded in come with gas bottles, EHU leads, ramps, spare wheels all sorts. When you come to buy a van a lot of the stuff mysteriously becomes "extras".

When I'm buying a van I always ask for the basics and if they are not prepared to throw them in, I go elsewhere. Don't be sorry for the dealers they are making at both ends, partex and sale.

I have looked at brand new vans, no radio or even a TV aerial, I asked the cost to put one on and was told about £300. I said can you throw it in, when they said no, I legged it.

EHU cable is a minimum.

Jan and I play good customer, bad customer to get a better deal, I'm interested she acts nonplused until the dealer breaks, great game, normally good results.

If you don't ask you don't get. :D

You have to enter a new contract with Calor, Flogas etc.
Any of their agents can arrange it......including the dealer you buy from if they stock gas bottles.
Not the cheapest option but if you don't have a bottle at all its your only option.

Not quite.

You could put the money towards buying a refillable bottle from Gaslow or Alugas and save on fills from LPG pumps instead of Calor or the like - half the price.

Also if you have a refillable(s) then it is versatile all over Europe, instead of swapping tanks.

That's what I'm doing, the previous owners of the van I've just bought told me they were including 2 UK calor bottles a French bottle a German bottle a Spanish bottle and a Portuguese bottle, I can't believe they carried all those bottles around while touring, I negotiated money off the van to allow me to have a "gasit" kit fitted which is £335 and costs less than £12 to fill them compared to around £30 a bottle for calor bottles and can be filled all round Europe
Makes much more sense I reckon

We never got one on a brand new Carthago we also never got any gas bottles

I would have told them where to stick their van,,BUSBY,,

If you go on the Calor UK website you will find that you can "buy" a full gas bottle without an old one to exchange.

It is more expensive than a swap because you will be charged for a "Cylinder Refill Agreement" as well. £38.09 + VAT in my case!

You can get a bottle for a £5 at your local recycling plant to exchange for a full one but personally would not accept a van without gas or a hook up lead,,BUSBY..

Hi
I just paid 80K for 2016 Hymer and when I asked did I get a EHU cable and gas bottles the salesman said no. So I ended up getting a gas system fitted £1000 and the salesman came back and said I got you a 10M EHU cable £27.90 thrown in I near pee'd myself with excitement.

I do think it would look better on their part if they just supplied a cable gas etc and just priced the van accordingly with the stuff included, when I sell something second hand with extras I include them but price it to cover the cost it doesn't look quite so unbelievably tight then

I recall buying a new washing machine in the 70's and the 13amp plug was extra.
My recycling centre won't sell anything from their 'totting' shed even though they have a locked cage with a selection of cylinders inside, but I did get a 6kg Calor bottle locally for a fiver from eBay.

We didn't get a EHU with our new van so like a stealth-thing I quickly swapped out the lead from our PX :-)

I think that is what the dealer expected you to do.

In hindsight I totally agree but at the time (and as a relatively new chap to motorhoming) I thought I was doing something wrong.

It's quite funny now when I think back :D

We got one with caravan and our first motorhome. Second motorhome didn't have one include, but really didn't need a third one :) I only left what I had to in both my part exchanges :D

@Erwal, have you got your new Westfalia now and did the dealer provide EHU and gas bottle?

We got one with our new Autocruise, (Spinney Motorhomes) and the dealership (Perthshire Caravans) supplied us with a new one with our second hand van too, when a customer is spending so much money why put a black cloud over someones ray of sunshine when it costs so little ?

When we bought our 8 year old motorhome, the dealer threw in an new EHU cable, a new food grade collapsible water hose and reel, a decent set of ramps and a full gas cylinder. Charging for an EHU cable is just a sign of a cheapskate dealer.

At the collection stage we had to push the dealer to get a 25m EHU cable, even though the salesman had agreed one when we placed the order months earlier. The old EHU cable had been included in the private sale of the Westy. We also got a free CO alarm, probably for the inconvenience of a second visit to get the correct Fiamma awning fitted.

The collection and handover process did not match our expectations, all very low key and a bit rushed despite the amount of money we had just spent, but we refused to let it spoil our exciting day. I suppose that from the dealer's perspective our collection was just the next appointment on a long list, and anyway our MH is only the baby of the Rapido range. How much do you have to spend to get a bunch of flowers, or bottle of wine? Never mind the red carpet, marching band and cheerleaders!

True, you spend a small fortune to you and it's in and out quick. I bought a car and received flowers, chocs at least a smile for a quarter of my new to me motorhome cost. Are some dealers better then others. I pick up my Burstner next Saturday I will let you know how I get on.

We were surprised to be met at pick-up by the whole sales team. We felt bad as we arrived a bit late but it was a nice touch! Our handover was also good despite it not being the normal handover chap. A woman from the service department did it and she clearly knew her stuff (Spinney, Cranage). We got the EHU that the previous owner had left in the van. No problem with that.
