She’s a bit of a bloater

If you were stopped and weighed they will allow a 5% leeway.
The only problem is that the weighbridge could already be reading 5% high, so the extra 5% may be of no benefit.

Its classed as private heavy goods so only £165

but does it not also come under tacho regulations and expense if registered over 7500 tonnes?(they are not cheap to install)

Wing it, and if stopped both get out of the van to stretch your legs and exercise the hound.
Phil

The last time I was checked, some years ago, I was asked to get out of the truck and the standard weight was used (70kl, I think?)

There's no way on earth that his 3500kg van can be updated to 7500kg so not applicable 😄

If you meant to say 'over 3500' then the answer is no, no tacho required.

That'll work, but just don't go near the USA at the moment.

Ha! Yes sorry, the last time I taxed a vehicle PHGV, it was a double decker bus that weighed 12tons. unladen

One has to be careful under LHGV rules though, they are very complicated and one can easily slip into it being classed as an HGV. (transporting a scooter for a friend who gives you a 'drink', for instance)

I had a friend who had her horsebox taxed Private HGV, but once she started to win events with money prizes, she had to change to full HGV because she was then transporting her horse for 'Hire or Reward'.

You can hire bikes by the day in many foreign places. Or e-scooters.

Many women's handbags are incredibly heavy. Go on, weigh hers.

My hubby's bumbag is heavier than many women's handbags. 😄

Have you had your MH for some time? We emptied our Adria MH prior to selling and then only packed what we really needed in our new pvc. I was amazed we had loads of payload left, but we do have a basement full of unnecessary items. We holiday quite happily now with only one wine glass, one water/gin glass and one brandy glass each instead of the 6 wine glasses etc. just in case anyone joined us for a drink etc. etc. etc. enough cleaners to set up a business. All totally unnecessary. However, my very heavy handbag is totally necessary :whistle2:

As you're already overweight and still need to fill tanks and put more stuff in I doubt if you're gonna get below 3500kg in full holiday trim.

If you have the time I'd suggest you uprate to 3850kg which assuming it was a 3500kg chassis to begin with should just be a paper exercise. Your road tax reduction will soon pay for the cost of this and take all your worry away.
Ours is the maxi chassis which allowed 4250 kgs.

The maxi can go up to 4500kg as that's the max of both axles but a reduction to 4250kg is quite common.

When these weight issues come up i often wonder just how often do MHers get stopped to get weighed by the rozzers.
If one is grossly overweight and give the rozzers an excuse to stop you then that's fair i think, but a few Ks over🤷‍♂️
We carry just what we need and always way way under. I've seen some MHs so packed with stuff it would be hard to get a fag paper in.

Loved your term “rozzers” made me smile and think straight away of George Cole and Dennis Waterman. God bless ‘em.

Can anyone tell me the implications of up plating?

  1. higher tolls France etc?
  2. higher eurotunnel costs?
  3. Can’t go down 3.5t or less roads?
  4. Higher insurance?
  5. less tax?
  6. anything else?
anyone done it? How long does it take?

regards,

mike

Only if you tell them! 😄
  1. higher eurotunnel costs?
Nope.
  1. Can’t go down 3.5t or less roads?
Welllllllll ..... If you still look 3.5t how would they know and a lot are meant to keep out commercial vehicles not private ones.
  1. Higher insurance?
Nope
  1. less tax?
Definitely 😃
  1. anything else?
Recovery may have restrictions and/or not cover you so you need to check.
anyone done it?
I've done it without a problem, just get an engineer's report (SV Tech or VWE who are about half the cost), send it in to the DVLA with the required info and wait.
How long does it take?
Not sure nowadays as apparently there was a long wait when DVLA were messing about during COVID restrictions etc, I think it's much quicker now, there are threads about it so have a search.

Need for C1 licence? :giggle:

Tacho only applies to commercial vehicles, a few self converters have found if they buy a panel van on the maxi it comes with a tacho & speed limiter.

So what does one do with a trailer on an Aire/Stellplatz?

BOOMEL did not mention his fuel tank status. If it were full he could start with about 25lt less and fill up more often en route. If it was empty he really has a problem to stay legal.

If he has C1 licence the upgrade should not be difficult as most van chassis leave the factory with max possible weight of 3850kg. Upgrade is often a paper exercise.
Keep the trailer attached. Seen plenty doing so on Aires and Stellplatz. He has a PVC so it won't be any longer than the big A classes that use them.

Why not the maximum? Just asking.

According to my 2017 Fiat X290 handbook, all the data sheets stop at 4,200 Kg MTPLM. No mention at all of 4,500 Kg versions.

You might infer that 4,200 Kg was the original design limit for this commercial chassis, therefore systems such as supension and brakes were sized accordingly. Transmission and clutch likewise. There might be a margin of safety up to 4,500 Kg but I couldn't see it.

Wouldn't have enough for the morning shower, full tank for us 160Lt.
I knew it, you're both toads! They need water on their skin regularly. 😄

The 4500kg comes from the total of the axle weights, have a look at the plates on the van.

I think the higher limits are because of the ALKO Chassis at the back maybe?
