Series 8 Ducato - Checking Oil

Eh? no starting handle - when did this happen?
Hi.
They became classed as a " Lethal Weapon " In the wrong hands..........They would not let you into some Dance Halls in the '50s if you had one in your possession... " Guns and Jeans supplied.....Bring your own Wimm'n !! "..... :ROFLMAO:

Just topped oil up earlier, am I right doesn't show new level until engine is warm as added a litre and no movement on guage. Will take for a run and check again. Is it easy to get to drain plug if overfilled.

I read in my manual it only reads correct when engine hot, but nit sure if read whilst still running or stopped with ignition on?

But it did say only add 200ml at a time and check again as overfilling is a real danger I understand. Your gague would suggest only about 600ml to full.

Not sure if it will even have a drain plug. I seem to think garages these days suck the oil out more than drop it.

When I added oil the gauge didn't move so I spoke to a " technician" at my local Fiat Professional garage . He said that you need to run the engine up to temperature , switch off for two minutes and then switch ignition on without starting it to reset the gauge.
Could have been BS mind.

Never a great idea to overfill the engine oil, and it is stupid in my opinion to switch to a system with no dipstick. Relying on an electronic sensor is foolish as a minor electrical fault can give a bad reading. So long as you are above minimum it is safe to drive and so long as it is not over filled the same. Only top up if you are below half mark and then only 200ml at a time. Not doing so may be very expensive repairs needed

I think if you've added a litre of oil with that reading you might have over filled, hope it's not the case.

yeah looks like im finding the drain plug tomorrow, do 30k per year in my Vw transporters and have never topped up in 10 years with last 5 vans between services even with 150k+ miles on them. But spend £60+k on a fiat and not only use oil but dont even get a dipstick....

my last ducato used oil till it had done over 20.000 miles, my 2022 one is still showing over half full at nearly 6000 miles so thay are all different.

Thanks, what a pile of pants, so how you supposed to know exact amount to put in. Sounds guess work to me..
Yes it’s meant to be called progress😜 The thing is in about 25 years we will all be posting on here whilst driving our all electric motorhomes, laughing and saying stuff like” Do you remember the old days when we had to put oil in”

I'll be bloody lucky if I have anything to say in 25yrs time? 😆

Progress,, fixed our old girl earlier. Stripped off carbs, manifolds and replaced gaskets. Turned key and no warning lights. Thought I'd top up oil on mh...

Mine is exactly the same & I never added oil to my 2012 one over 40k

Modern engine oils are much thinner than the old stuff mostly to reduce fuel consumption, this has lead to the increased oil consumption.

Just get longer dip sticks if the one you have wont reach the oil, simples.

Not in my 2007 Ducato X250 with 62k on the clock. I've now had it 6yrs and it needs NO topping up between services which I give it every 2yrs (so approx. 10,000mls) I've been impressed! 👍
PS. I usually travel at about 65-70 on the motorways so it's not because it poodles 😆

Just read my manual and this us what it says

Thanks for highlighting the procedure. (y)

I checked our oil level on the gauge at roughly 2.5k miles in Greece and it hadn’t dropped. Back home after some spirited autostrada running and on 5.5k the level was one division below halfway, so I dropped a litre in before realising the advise was 0.20ltr per fill and to monitor the level in between - I was wondering why the gauge wasn’t registering any increase! Now done the check/reset correctly after a run and it’s one division below maximum.

No dipstick is a nightmare! I decided not to wait for the first scheduled oil change on our dipstickless Ducato Mark 8 and do an interim oil and filter change at 10,000 miles. I put in the stipulated amount (5.5 litres). Everything was fine until I had run for around 70 miles when the "Oil Level too high" warning appeared. Playing safe I drained around 1 litre off but the warning remains. It seems that once triggered it doesn't re- set automatically when the oil level is lower. Does anyone know what the re-set procedure may be? At the moment I've no way of finding out what the current level is.

Have a look at post #35

Hope it is more reliable than on the last version. Mine comes up with different level every time you turn on and keeps coming up with a low oil level warning. My mates is the same.
Its not, my friend has one. Its all over the place. He put a litre in from empty, it didnt show for 24hrs!

It will auto reset, but you have to get the level below max and run it as per post 35, I know because, I too have been there!
I added half a litre from 2 marks below max & got the too high warning, so ended up draining half a litre before the message went.
Now shows 1 mark below max...go figure :rolleyes:

My '22 model is also oscilating. Most days shows 7/8 segments, some others 5/8.
I guess depends on weather and driving conditions?
At least I can say the sensor is alive.
What blows my mind is the vehicle says 30k km first oil change and 48k km first service...

Mines also shows a different level every time you check it, although always above the half level So far. I did top up a little, but only a very small amount, which didn’t seem to register as such. As long as it’s showing above half, then am not going to worry.
I do intend to get the oil & filter changed at 12 months old, I am a bit old school, and although modern oils are so much better, still like to see fresh oil every year.
Also, at least you will know that it’s ’Full’ after the change🤣🤣

Hi my 71 plate ducato has that engine, there's not a dipstick ,when I picked it up on the handover the oil level was checked, then I drove it home and all was well 40 miles on the clock, I didn't drive it for about 3 weeks and used it on the Christmas eve
As i was parking on the drive red lights came on saying stop max oil level exceeded , I eventually had it recovered and fiat professional asked me if I had put 2 litres of extra oil in ,it had less than 150 miles on it , its fine now tho , 4500 miles later no problems and I love it loads at the time it was a pain and I couldn't go away after boxing day as planned , I had not put any in

Hi 21 plate Ducato, i have both , display on turning on ignition i get a vertical display of 5 bars ? when checked last week it was down to 3 so checked dipstick and was just above min , bought a litre put about 200ish mils in vertical display now shows max but can't see anything on dipstick tried a few times today should i be ok ??? as i don't want to over fill .

Hi not sure yours is the same mine doesn't have a dipstick,, but If yours does and its not showing any oil you may want to put some in , or get a longer one 😁😀😄
