Hi All

I am consideroing selling my Burstner motorhome and TOAD.

So far I have had a couple of offers for the motorhome in the £47,000-£48,000 for a straight sale to a trader, I am guessing I could get a little more selling privately BUT am really nervous about such an expansive transaction.

Any thoughts suggestions or cautions?

Robin

Sell separately, burstner on here in classified, car too as separate ad.
Accept payment by bank transfer only and you shouldn't have a problem apart from possibly tyre kickers

Good idea to sell them separately people can always then make an offer on both if they want!

Hi Robin,

Why not try selling it on fun might make the experience easier selling to another funster.

Don't most members on here already own a motorhome !
You‘re probably right but we returned to motorhoming last year after a break of a few years and re joined on here before getting a vehicle. There was nothing in classifields that suited us unfortunately but I reckon it’s still worth putting it on, all you need is one person.

Sell on here and on Autotrader. I had no problem, including calls from dealers who never matched my asking price. Autotrader filter calls so nobody gets your phone number unless you choose to move on to contacting interested parties directly. Deposit by bank transfer to show commitment followed by balance the day before collection.

the biggest issue is one of payment - many bank a/c have a daily ceiling of something like £25k - so there would need to be some discussion with your bank about how to pay for it in one transaction - as a seller, i wouldn't let a van go untill i had all the money, and as a buyer, i would want hand handover immediately on transfer and receipt of monies.
I'd expect neither party would be happy taking / making half a payment and releasing the vehicle or coming back tomorrow to collect it - at least with an established dealer there is a greater degree of security

I never sell privately... I always take what dealer will give as a trade in..
Yes you probably could get a "bit" more but is it really worth all the possible hassle of selling private???

Sorry, should have been clearer, the offer was just for the Motorhome, but maybe I will give it a try on here, good to know the BACS solution and paid day before collection.

My biggest issue is I am currently between houses so motorhome is sited and I am like going to have to sell it from there, not the best way to do things as we were living in it for 3-4 months! :-(

I bought a 6 month old tow car off here no problems, just do your homework like anything you buy possibly a lot more trustworthy than some dealers🙂

Most current accounts have a maximum daily limit on what can be transferred.
But the buyer can speak to their bank and inform them of the planned transaction and amount. They will then lift the limit for the day.
Do a transaction for 1 pound initially, when you have this you can advise the buyer and transfer the balance.
They can do it whilst sat at your home having agreed the deal.
It can't be reversed once it's landed in your account

depends on the bank Nationwide it is a 10k limit per transaction and you can make another transaction after the first one and so on.
Most banks will lift the restriction if notified beforehand.

Good idea about getting them to send a £1 first, with the Faster Payment system they now use you can't recall payments. The £1 makes sure they have the account details correct.

Not sure about paying the outstanding balance the day before……agree with others that a straight bank transfer is fine. Get them to pay deposit in to same account, that way the buying account recognises your account for the bigger transaction when collecting. Request to the buyer that they speak to their bank and ensure the outstanding balance payment will go straight through on the day of collection. Banks and different accounts have different daily limits, mine with Natwest is £50k per day as an example. No need to worry about transfer of monies across accounts. Once money is showing as available in your account, it is impossible for the buyer to get it back.
I always sell privately, just sold our Lexus, offered £25k as px, sold it privately on Autotrader for £31,500……

Thanks everyone.

I have put the van up and will see if I get any takers!

Best of luck. Just read your advert, if it was me I would be inclined to get it MOT’d and serviced If they are due in a couple of weeks. Advert would be a lot more tempting if you said it’s got 12 months MOT and just been serviced. Just my thoughts. Best of luck.

I’m with Nationwide and was told about the £10k limit when I enquired in our local branch. However, I made a ‘trial’ payment to our MoHo dealer, which required verification using their supplied card reader gizmo, and the next day, when taking delivery, I paid the £70k balance with my debit card in their showroom and it went straight through without requiring any further authorisation. I’m guessing that the first payment set them up as a ‘trusted’ business payee?
