Scotland in September - doubting if to go because of weather

Ralphs on with the webasto heating system as I type. So hopefully that will be sorted for when we have our trip in a couple of weeks. We will need it on an evening I'm sure!

Wind did get up a bit yesterday evening but lovely again this morning.
 
Just looking for update, did the op come to Scotland if not they have missed some decent weather off the top of my head it's only rain once or twice in the last fortnight. All the first week then all the second, only joking it's been really nice and still shorts and T shirt weather.
 
We are counting down to the 24th. Heading up to Aviemore, then over to Stornaway. Up to Ness point then wander right back the islands to Barra. Then back to the mainland. Fingers crossed we get fair weather. We've now got gas and hot water yipeeeeeee. Only the heating to finish. Just the final fix. Hopefully this that'll be done before we set off on Pugs proper first maiden trip.

Ralph really deserves a nice break. He's worked so hard trying to do Pug the PVC as well as run his building company.
We've just bought a couple of pairs of lounging about tracksuit bottoms ! From sports direct ........
Something we just don't wear. Haha. Me especially !
But we plan on doing plenty of that on an evening whilst up there!
 
What a fantastic holiday were having, were heading south now as we have to be home on Wednesday but have enjoyed over two glorious weeks. Just arrived at Hawick on their completely free, motorhome marked bays with 24 hr toilets available an we are mighty impressed.(y)

How many spaces are at Hawick ? is it just a case of park up ?

Might head over on Monday afternoon after work should only take a few hrs.

Any suggestions of other stops CC or aires heading north probably not heading

Hawick were having problems with boy racers in carpark disturbing overnighters, hope it's sorted now.

The problem isn't the cold, just turn the wick up on the heater or put a second jumper on. It is the hours of daylight as you go further north.

This is why the Scots are pale skinned with red hair. Evolution has made these characteristics predominate as those with them have an advantage finding each other in the dark.
 
Just a warning - the good weather after a wet summer is bringing out the midges in their droves! Regretfully we have had to return home as MrsL got badly bitten and has suffered a reaction that we're now treating with anti-histamine tablets.
Anywhere near water in the evening when the wind drops off is liable to suffer. Use repellent (despite comments Avon Skin So Soft does work, the campsites sell it too) and keep covered up. We used citronella candles in the van which seemed to keep them at bay.
I know some people have other ideas and I don't want to put people off - I'm just reporting what happened to us.
 
We came back from Scotland last Monday. We had excellent weather for the majority of our 2-week trip - warm and sunny much of the time. The Scots said it was the best weather they'd had for months. Don't know if it was "the sun shines on the righteous" or "the Devil looks after his own" but we were happy!

On our journey to the Western Highlands we stayed one night in the Lake District (would have stayed two but site at Bowness was full and we hadn't booked in advance).

One night at the Moffat C&CC site.

Two nights at Milton of Fonab CS in Pitlochry. Pitlochry is a very pretty and Queen's View (6 miles outside Pitlochry) is spectacular. Have wanted to see this for years, so that's another 'bucket list' item ticked off.

One night at a small site at Gairlochy, close to the Commando Monument. Very emotional at the memorial but well worth seeing and the views were fabulous.

Three nights at Linnhe Lochside at Corpach near Fort William. This was the highlight of our trip. Fantastic site with the most beautiful views and incredible sunsets over the loch. Just down the road was Corpach Basin where you can get a clear view of Ben Nevis. We also went to Neptune's Staircase on the Caledonian Canal - fantastic feat of engineering - and there a lovely café where you can sit outside drinking coffee and watch the barges sailing by. Twelve miles north was Glenfinnan with its monument commemorating the Jacobite Revolution. Also there was the Glenfinnan Viaduct for the railway. We were disappointed to discover that the Jacobite Steam Railway trip was fully booked right up to the end of the season in October. Fort William itself had plenty of shops and the people were lovely and welcoming but the architecture there was uninspiring.

We spent one night at Sunnyside Croft, Arisaig hoping for an amazing sunset but it was cloudy!

We continued our journey to Mallaig to complete the 42-mile Road to the Isles. We could have got a ferry to Skye or one of the other isles here at Mallaig but we were running out of time.

We needed to head home but we wanted to see Oban, (we overnighted at Ardfern MH Park) Glen Coe and Loch Lomond , so worked out a route to include these and so glad that we did.

We stopped twice en route back to Lincolnshire - Cressfield Park at Ecclefechan near Lockerbie and then Constable Burton CS near Leyburn in North Yorkshire.

All in all we had a wonderful time and we have to give grateful thanks to our twenty-one year old trusty Talbot Express for transporting us to some of the most beautiful scenery that we have ever seen. If only the Western Highlands of Scotland were nearer home (for us, it's 500 miles to Fort William) and if we could also have guaranteed sunshine then we would visit every year.

Phew! Well that's a brief account of our visit to Scotland and I've now run out of superlatives to describe it so won't say any more! Hope you enjoyed it.
 
No contest in my mind ,we had never been to Scotland until 3 years ago,fantastic in all respects,took dog and welcome everywhere.
South West can be good, but have had some not so good experiences,especially in the so called friendly touristy areas.
Ignore the weather if you live in the British Isles,it is what makes it so green and pleasant.
There is no such thing as bad weather only bad clothing,you can be comfortable in all conditions if you have the right gear.
If you seek warm sunshine and cloudless conditions go for a sandy beach in a more relevant location.

Certainly had a few good breaks up here in the van late august and now september....kids back at school and an indian summer (y)
 
Not sure if OP ever made Scotland last month @Oriel ? but what a great period of weather they seem to have had, just watched Carol on Breakfast TV Braemar yesterday -1C overnight (coldest anywhere in UK in September) then 24C yesterday :)

We love Scotland, we have been many times in September / October and had many decent days (y)
 
Can't believe the weather at the moment, daughter took a drive around the trossachs on Tuesday and stopped at Loch Vannacher, there was motorhome in layby with washing hanging out and quite a few midges around, wonder if it was a funster.
