Are they still relevant in this day and age of Streaming, question is do I need one??

It is my understanding that those (.....................) <insert swear word here,
have shrunk the 'footprint' of the area where a good, lawabiding citizen of the UK can receive signals when he/she/them/those
wonder down South beyond the Isle of Wight.

Would some kind Funster send me details (In a plain brown envelope if necessary) of how
to circumvent this problem when visiting France, South of Bordeaux Spain and Portugal.

Thank you in advance.

Only you can decide whether you 'need' one or not, they are far from being obsolete if that is what you're thinking. You can watch whatever you want wherever you want for a price. At the moment sat dishes are still very viable, they're not quite on a par with betamax just yet.

I'm not wearing a plain brown envelope for no one.

The last time I did that, they posted me to Brighouse!

Don’t expect streaming to be 100% reliable , especially in rural parts .
how many times have you looked at phone and the signal is 1bar or even non existent .
out in Spain at Bonterra park we had a great signal 100% on Vodafone Spain , I thought great no problems here but come late afternoon although the signal remained strong the picture became unwatchable with constant buffering .
Had to resort to putting the dish up to get a consistent picture on Intelsat 901

Using an 80cm dish and a Sky Javelin box I don't get a satellite signal much further south than Bordeaux nowadays. Is your experience recent or before the footprint was shrunk down?
September/ October last year around Udine & Peschiera north Italy, Menton Cannes, Provence and up through France. Saved using a lot of data and kept the Mrs happy 😊
That was using the 80 cm oyster dish and javelin SKY box.

If your using Freesat on Astra 2 you will lose the mainstream channels as you get closer to Spain
However Astra 2 pan European beam is still receivable right across Spain
which carries a multitude of English speaking channels but they are encrypted and only watchable if you have a SKY HD box and subscription card
We were at La Manga and could get SKY News as well Sports Movies and a whole host of channels on the Sky platform
But No BBC or ITV

If I want the mainstream channels I simply retune to Intelsat 901 and plug in a different receiver box

What you need is a satellite receiver that can tune to the Intelsat 901 satellite. This transmits the back up channels which (ahem) it's not legal to receive. These work with a BISS code, see this example https://www.satgear.co.uk/icecrypt-...ta-including-option-for-europe-pre-setup.html
The icecrypt brand is the best known but no longer manufactured. Other makes are available.
Most of the dealers will sell you one but for obvious reasons they tend not to advertise.
The Intelsat 901 channels are limited https://www.lyngsat.com/Intelsat-901.html
Good reception all the way down to Morocco I believe

Definitely not illegal to buy the receiver and the reception of the Satback service has been debated on here at length... No one has been arrested for watching the BBC etc on Intelsat and I doubt anyone ever will be even cautioned over it. Pay your TV licence as you should and watch just as you would at home, or if you were streaming it through data whilst in another country other than the UK.
The Intelsat feed is just another delivery method of watching what you are legally entitled to watch.

We are currently on a 90 day EU tour, with a nearly new Hymer which came with the factory installed Oyster dish/receiver, we have not yet bothered to put it up, happy with watching TV via the Amazon Firestick.

Yes. We were at Marbury Country Park at the weekend and at Sycamore Farm, Chelford two weeks before. Both areas have very little if any data signal. Marbury has a lot of trees and very poor antenna signal for Freeview. A lot of ares off the beaten track are the same. Wales! Well what can one say.
We are currently in Wales and I can confirm!! We have had TV signal for 3 out of 11 nights so far, although now I have bought my 3rd sim card...EE we do have Internet 🤗 limiting our streaming though as I need data for work 😂

Agreed. It's a technicality. The footprint doesn't reach into Eastern Germany as we found out a couple of years ago.
