Samsung or Ipad?

The vote seems to be Ipad Pro.

Coklyboy thanks everybody

...just one point to emphasise
It has been mentioned in passing but I do think it's a significant difference... expansion.

With an iPad you're limited to whatever memory you initially buy [...and don't forget that some of it will be taken up by the OS and you'll have a lot less to use for Apps & your own data storage]...
...but with most Android tablets and Samsung specifically, you can buy microSD memory cards [relatively cheaply] which gives you almost unlimited storage & number of Apps you can have.

Lack of expansion is a downside for some pads, including Apple ones. Don’t get hung up on the size of the operating system, Apple’s iOS is pretty compact. I keep some stuff in the cloud but most of it is on my iPad and I have no trouble managing with the basic 64gb model.

Looking for a 10" tablet Samsung or Ipad?

Colyboy

Why ?

I recently bought one like this ( not sure if it's identical ) very good spec, does what I want, book reading or a look at FUN and if I drop it or lose it, no big deal. Lasts hours reading books.

From MacWorld:
  • 128GB: approx. 114GiB
  • 64GB: approx. 56.5GiB
  • 32GB: approx. 27.5GiB
  • 16GB: approx. 11.5GiB

iPad - I would not personally go for a sim version as you can link the iPad the iPhone (personal hotspot) - assuming you have one. And when in a wifi area you don't need it.

I bought a Huawei 10" a while back

Just over £100 and works really well

Takes SD cards so storage not a problem

Only downside is it takes a longish time to charge

PS: It is a phone as well so could take a SIM and go on line like a phone, I've not tried this.

fair point..

but what about GPS.. thought it was only the sim models that had that capability ?

The only reason you would fork out extra money for a sim card version is if you don't have a smart phone, which is pretty unlikely these days. Just make your phone a hotspot and save around a hundred quid!

You cannot compare Apple to the cheapest Samsung devices, but the more expensive ones and getting near Apple prices are equally as good.

As already said, depends what you want it to do.

Ipad = expensive but well engineered kit, constrained by what Apple will allow you to do - but that walled garden might be large enough for your needs.
Samsung = cheaper but equally well engineered but without the kudos of the Apple i-branding...
No borders, you can go where you like, but that can bring dangers of heading down a single track road.

Spot on - Apple too tied down but beautifully engineered and equally expensive.

Samsung Tab S4 would be my choice. (I have TabS which I have been really pleased with). Greater software base.

BUT you said 10" and the iPad Pro is 11" (or 13").

There's heaps of experience out here, trying to help, and all you've said is "Looking for a 10" tablet Samsung or Ipad!"
I'm not convinced that you're going to get what you want...

Maybe or is it the usual bun fight, my tablet is better than your tablet ?

Interesting spread of prices £50 --> £769 and they all do nominally the same thing.

You pays your money, you makes your choice.

an iPad Pro is very much a specialist piece of kit ideal for hi end design work and if you are asking the question I expect a more standard iPad would be more than sufficient. Maps will work without a sim but location etc only if linked to a smartphone.

Could be over £2k for the large iPad Pro (13", 1Tb, pencil, keyboard & case).
Nice bit of kit, if you know how to use it...

Wow. That sounds a professional's tool. Something like an architect, draughtsman, surveyor. Certainly not for emails and web chat too big to hold for ages.

True. Such purchases should be driven by what you want to do (which may, indeed, be to impress your pals). Without criteria, you're unlikely to pick a good solution. I'm sure we can all point to examples of that!

Ah yes, willie waving. Nothing sums up Apple i____ more than than that. It isn't the worlds richest company for nothing.

What do I want to use it for:-

1 To receive and send emails from abroad and home
2 Take photos and save them
3 No downloading of films etc
4 Do not own a smarthone or need one
5 For WiFi i am using "e" Myfi which works ok

If it's 'just' or mainly for e-mails, I'd agree that a tablet is the better format, but consider getting a keyboard.
I reckon I wouldn't be taking many photos with a tablet. The quality may be OK but the chances are that I'd not bother to take something that's not pocketable with me on every occasion (where's I'd have a camera if I had a phone). Lots of photos may demand more than the minimum spec (64Gb) device. You cannot add storage later with Apple, so get the most you can afford from the start. You could use cloud storage, though, at the expense of your data allowance.
You're not obliged to make or take calls if you have a phone (but it can be useful). You might find it more practical to get one of those.

All do this, via WiFi

2 Take photos and save them
Big problem. Photos can take up huge amounts of space and being precious need backing up.
You can plug an Andoid phone or tablet into a PC/laptop and transfer them. That's what I do. Which is why I have a "proper" laptop with decent storage inside.

OK

OK

Fine.

So just the photos to worry about. I have 137GB at present.

I do have a £10 bluetooth keyboard for tablet use, it works surprisingly well.

your better off with a half decent smartphone to do what you want any samsung a or s series will do all that easily and the cameras are excellent now and pocket sized i find using a tablet for photos a bad experience

One of the problems with Apple is they love charging huge amounts of money for memory whereas Android Tablets take Micro SD cards for App or Photo storage. A 256gb Sandisk can be had for about £60 in the current Black Friday Sale.

Your choice what to buy but I wouldn't get a tablet based on these criteria. I would say that you would be wasting money on an expensive device and under-using a tablet.

With these criteria, I would get a reasonable camera and a cheapish tablet. Tablets aren't great for taking photos in all conditions and are conspicuous when using to take images - they won't fit in your jacket pocket when wandering about. Emails don't require high spec devices such as iPads or Samsung tab As.

I would get a smartphone as an intermediate step. It can do all that you want from your list and would be more versatile. The question would then be, Android or Apple. You can get a decent tablet and Android phone for less than the cost of an iPhone.

For experienced users, please excuse the very basic info following. This is directed at the OP who is clearly a newbie to this subject.

I agree with the advice to get a phone, not a tablet.

In fact, I have a Samsung 10.1 tablet, in a smart red 'book fold' case, going spare. The reason my Sam tab is for sale is that it falls between two stools. It's not as full-on as a laptop, even a 'cloudbook' and it's not as handy as a phone. There's nothing the tab does that my phone won't do. But there are things the phone will do that the tab will not.

As the tab is not G4, it can't make mobile net calls. Adding G4 to a tablet adds +/- £100. That's 3/4 of a Moto 6 Play phone. It will make voice calls on Wazzapp and Skype - but so will the phone. And not being able to make a call could be a real problem, one day.

A tablet will not fit in your pocket. You will need some kind of bag to carry it about and the faff-factor will discourage you. This means you will rarely take it along when you step out.

The size of it makes it very inconvenient to use as a camera. The results will be no better than a good phone.

As a 'computer for the road' it is less capable and convenient to use than a slim laptop. I have an Acer Aspire Cloudbook which is not very much bigger or heavier than the Sam tab in its case but it has a real keyboard and runs Win10. It has an SD card slot, USB port to plug in peripherals or SD card reader. It is what I take to a wifi spot to do stuff on a screen very much bigger than a phone.

I got fed up with the virtual keyboard on the Sam and the prospect of adding an outboard keyboard just made the whole thing even less appealing.

Have a browse on 'Expert Reviews' for their recommendations. I have been extremely pleased with the Motorola G series phones. Samsung phones are great, too. I only moved from a G4 to G6 for the extra screen size. Max out on screen size, avoid the 'gotcha!' factor and premium prices of Apple products [slick as they may be], Android is a breeze to use, there are bucket-loads of apps for it costing peanuts.

Case in point. The Oxford English Dictionary [Android] is free from Google Play Store. From Apple's iStore it's US$9.99.

PS. My Samsung 10.1 tablet is available if anyone is interested. PM me for details.

iPad you tied to Apple with a Samsung you are free and it's just as good and best thing of all it's lot cheaper.

I have a iPad it was bought for me.

I agree that you should maybe get a smartphone instead of a pad for your use. I currently have a Galaxy S7 which I find superb. However, I also have an ageing iPad that I have been wishing to replace and have been comparing newer iPad's with the Samsung Tab S4 for several months. The S4 would have made most sense as I already have the S7 phone, for compatibility but, I do find iPad's more intuitive and relatively easy to just get around. The Tab S4 also has a glass back which may be vulnerable as I have accidentally sat on my iPad many times-without damage and dropped it a few time...also without damage.

Anyway, I jumped in on Black Friday and purchased a 2018 iPad - not the Pro! This iPad has the A10 processor which is only 10% less efficient than the 2017 iPad Pro with the A10x processor and costs only £409 with 128gb memory. Also, purchasing it directly from Apple got me a £40 store card on the deal. Not only that, Apple stores will give you any amount of technical help should you need it. I have also read that, in the event of a hardware problem any Apple Store will just give you a replacement - even when recently out of warranty. You only need the iPad Pro for professional use really and it is a lot more expensive for stuff you may never use. Anyway, that's my take on it - hope it helps.
