On GB news this morning an item referred to a thief who stole expensive wine from Sainsburys in London. A good citizen chased after him in a car including high speed and wrong way down a one-way street. Sainsburys decided not to prosecute but the chap who chased the theif was fined 110pounds.

Is it ok for a person in the street to take part in a high speed chase the wrong way down a one way street for a theft of wine? I'd say not. Good citizen or vigilante?

These days, turn a blind eye unless it’s life or death.

I switched off after you said it was on outrage inducing, rage enhancing, temper losing work of mainly fiction, GB news.

We all get angry about theft until they hit your nearest and dearest with their heavy car speeding the wrong way down a one way street.

Best fund the Police properly IMHO but that doesn’t get people angry on GBeebies.

Actually he drove at 5 mph and before retirement had been a police driver!

Bet he wishes the Police were better funded as well then. 😆

Ah, Norman Brennan, just checked the news report from a real media outlet. Say no more.

It was a fixed penalty from an automatic camera by the council, he committed the offence and had no legal authority to claim an exemption.

Quite different from what the OP posted, but that doesn’t annoy and outrage.

I don’t see it as so different from the OP.

Under the circumstances he should have had grounds for exemption.

Still, everyone is entitled to comment.

I completely agree, but local authorities aren’t renowned for being reasonable unfortunately. The very reason I much prefer a human instead of a computer deciding who to fine.

In self defence.... I am not a regular listener to GB news which I totally, absolutely agree with all here who place it lower than Fox news or the old Daily Sport. I frankly find it silly. I did however feel irate at the idea of a thief being let off and someone endeavouring to stop him, being prosecuted.:imoutahere:

Not so much a defence; more a plea of mitigation. 😏

Never watched GB News, are people saying the story is a lie?

The story is true in that he received a fine from an automatic camera while following a thief.

GB news however would whip it into an angry pitchfork waving mob of an abomination against humankind purely to stir up their target audience to hate life itself after getting fits of rage.

so long as the same applies when I run the cyclist down who is going the wrong way down a one way street? I can sue him for all damage?
Ahem....

By default, in the UK, one way streets only apply to those that need an annual renewable licence to use the road, (motorised vehicles).
Those that have a "right" to the road (pedestrians, horses and cyclists) can use a one way street either way.

(Yes, there are exceptions.)

Not called Brains for nothing 👍

And when he hits a cyclist going the right way down a one way street?
But he didn't hit a cyclist did he, though we do often see cyclist's riding the wrong way along a one way street.

Incorrect, a cyclist can only ride the wrong way along a one way street if it is clearly signposted that it is allowed.
