Safe temperature to leave a house.

Years ago I worked offshore so left the house empty for two weeks at a time. No central heating, came back to find the toilet bowl broken and lying on it's side. I had turned off the water and electrics but of course the bowl had frozen! Annoying getting home after the long 'planes and boats and trains' commute to no loo. Used to put salt into the bowl after that.

Despite my cheery reply to Zentex at #83 I did turn the water off and leave a couple of big 3 phase storage heaters on low when we popped away this week for a few days at Meschers on the Gironde estuary. We are only an hour or so from home. Mostly to be sure it was warmish when we get back but also because the risk is too big to contemplate at our age and electricity is more affordable in France with buckets of nuclear power in the generation system.
