Hi all. Well, after lots of umming and ahhring, we've decided very sadly to sell our motorhome. We've had lots of family fun in her and don't really want to but last year we were so busy with other family commitments that we didn't get to use her very much and this year looks like it will be the same. Whilst we are really sad to see her go, it seems silly to have her sitting there unused.

So, I realise I may not be in the right bit of the forum for this sort of advice but anyone got any advice on where/how to sell. We thought we'd try to sell privately but am slightly worried about how we get paid securely.

Is it best to go to a dealer to see if they are interested? Any advice welcome!

Thanks Rosemary

The problem with bank transfers is that they can take up to 24 hours to clear, this is a fact, should anyone doubt this check with your bank.
We sold a Mercedes to a lady from Birmingham within hours of advertising it, she told us that she would get the train down to us and providing the car was ok and drove well she would pay us by bank transfer and take the car away.
Test drive over and happy with the car, she made the call to her bank to move the money to ours, “it shouldn’t take long as I pre warned them yesterday” she said. Three hours later with much tea and biscuits taken the money still hadn’t arrived at our bank. By now the purchaser was getting upset as she needed to collect her children from school back in Birmingham, calls to both banks were unproductive, finally my wife let her take the car but retained the V5, service history, and mot as security. Happily the money arrived at 5.0pm, next time it will be cash !!!

Sent the wife into the bank with 24 grand in used notes when we sold one van and even took their old Swift thing in part exchange as decided it would be easier to shift a lower value van .
Sold another van last February to get the HYMER pig and took 26k in cash but as it was Scottish I went with the buyer to the bank and there was absolutely no problem at all.
More trouble organising a transfer for the new van (n)
Sold a Laika 8 years ago and the guy left me a cheque that cleared in a few days we had the van and his money for a fortnight until we delivered it to him as arranged.
Having been in business I think you develop a different perspective to risk .

Bank transfers done by yourself on a computer or by the banking app done by faster payment clear straight away into the account of the person being paid. We run our own business and experience this on a daily basis. With a transfer when the bank is instructed to do it the delay will undoubtably be the bank physically processing the transaction.

If I was selling something as high value as a motorhome the only payment I would accept off someone I do not know would be a bank transfer.

Hard to believe they just happened to still have £4k in cash just laying around in the house.
Coincidence...no.
Tall tale.... Definately.

Nope truth.
No insurance payment either as wasn't covered.
Not the first time I've come across this either.
So nope not tell tale and maybe you should read the facts regarding sales by cash on trusted websites such as AutoTrader.

Dealing in cash for big ticket items is a no no..but the OP asked for advice and I'm sure will make their mind up.

£10k I believe, but it may have changed, as I said, we dont take even £100 in cash so not checked
In the Uk if you were stopped in the street by the police you'd have trouble if carrying a grand.
They'd assume you were a drug dealer etc, Here the street limit is 100k euros but 10k for declaration crossing a border, same as elsewhere.

Interesting piece of info for you @gus-lopez
80% of Europe’s entire circulation of 500 euro notes are in Spain:)

I suspect most of it surrounds propertysales when cash routinely changes hands

Black money (y)
Spain is still unfortunately one of the most corrupt countries in Europe
Yes it’s funny as nobody bats an eyelid when you pull out a 500 Euro note (y)
Not like the U.K. where they go into shock if you dare try to use a 50 pound note (n)

See my post No.12 above - in those circumstances the person carrying was a serving Police Sargeant.

Anyway we had paperwork from my bank, and any cash drawn from a UK bank is deemed to have been cleared for money laundering.

Yes up until the 'crisis' occurring spain used to average a 25% year on year increase in 500€ note production.:)In 2007 it was 26% up on 2006 .In 2008 it was 37% up on 2007.:)
Then at an early point in the crisis some government bod announced that there was 54 Billion in 500€ notes ONLY, hidden at home by spaniards.
A few years later some other half wit minister was gleefully announcing that now there was 'only' 50 million in 500€ notes hidden , 4 billion having been forced back into the regularly economy, until someone pointed out that "it'll only be another 37 years then ?":LOL:

I was reading an article some while back that stated that the 'black economy' had a value equivalent to the post crisis gdp of Cataluña, around 40 billion.

Spain is still unfortunately one of the most corrupt countries in Europe

& you know what they say ; " The only problem with corruption, as a form of government, is that it works too well":(

There have been a few half hearted attempts at crack downs , no more than 2500€ can be paid using cash between 2 businesses, so private buyers can still pay any amount.:)
Then the vague modification to house buying which states you can no longer pay using"all cash"

I'm wondering whether there will be some time limit placed on using 500€ notes once the last 2 , Spain & Germany cease production of them this year I believe?
If so then we can expect a sharp rise in property, land, cars ,etc, whilst people unload them jsut like the changeover from pesetas to Euros.:)

Isnt this good - OP about selling motorhome ends up in speculation about drug dealing and money laundering.
How did that happen?

We Tried to do a bank transfer on the sellers computer with them present from our account to there's, as believed this was the safest way to pay for it £28,000 however on first try message came please ring this bank number, which we did and found out that we could only transfer a max of £10,000 per day we are in Liverpool and home is south coast,so it would take 3 days to complete purchase, luckily the seller said they trusted us to Complete the purchase at our home after taking the M/H away,we had traveled by train to Liverpool so lucky for us to find a trusting seller we then over the next two days transferred the remainder

We had similar experience, but the sum was a lot smaller, when selling a Highland Pony. The buyer decided bank transfer would be quicker than waiting for a cheque to clear. However, she was paying from the farm account and her husband hadn’t mentioned that he had 5 days worth of stacked payments waiting to go through for a new agri-shed he’d had built. Alls well that ends well .... pony and new owner seem to be made for each other :D,

just sold and bought on a Saturday lunchtime with my buyer transferring funds to my account and to the seller of the van I was buying, all done in less than 30 minutes with no hassles. We had met in my seller's village, so we each drove off in our new purchases, having met a week earlier to inspect each van

We sold our last MH by my online bank transactions. We chose two equal amounts with two very small amounts to the same accounts previously. To check they would go in .
Then when the large amounts went in , we transferred them both to our savings straight away . Just incase they could be snatched back in any way !
They weren’t , of course.
We were happy and the purchasers were too . They took the motorhome and lived happy ever after ......
