Route planning, avoiding Rouen, and low emission zones, from France through to Portugal

I would apply for a Crit Air badge anyway so that you know where you are - only a few euros.
Use the French Gov website only
The problem with this is that you are volunteering your information so it actually makes it easier for them to prosecute.

When you talk to the French camping caristes, hardly any of them have the sticker because they seem to think it should only apply to Paris.

Ok - I received a response from the City of Rouen ZFE Department.
Considering Derek's explication of what "motorhome" means in this context, I'm unsure if one should rely on this response.
I have asked Rouen for clarification regarding foreign registered motorhomes.
Here's the response :
"Sir,
You wanted to know if there was an exemption for motorhomes to drive in the ZFE-m of the Rouen Normandy Metropolis.
We confirm that motorhomes are authorized to circulate in the ZFE-m by way of derogation, until June 30, 2024.

Starting to plan my route, I was primarily aiming to avoid Rouen's decapitating underpasses, but then realised that actually, avoiding low emission zones is a much bigger problem.
Recently my sat nav took me through Rouen without any tunnels whatsoever. It was a better route if a little busy. It's possible that the sat nav up in the sky has been reprogrammed for that reason.

What is the problem with these tunnels in Rouen is it height say 2or 3 metres high or more , or is it width ?

At least one of the tunnels. is less than 2 metres high. It's the city centre ones are the worst.

Off through Rouen and back in June so still no requirement for a Crit Air then?

Does the Rouen LEZ recognise over 3500kg as HGV and require Euro 5 engine?
The main issue with Rouen is the height of the tunnels on the underpasses.
They are mostly 2m, and every few weeks is yet another tragic photo of a motorhome with the roof ripped off.

I find this particularly stupid when all you have to do is drive over the top.

Agreed… it’s probably, Blackwall tunnel aside, the best warned about tunnel in Europe. Yet still it happens. 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

I have no intention of going anywhere near Rouen or any other French LEZ, but has any UK registered motorhome ever been fined for straying into one? And if they have was it a camera that caught them or a police officer?

My satnav told me to use the tunnel.....and we all do exactly what our satnav says don't we?
I had to reverse several metres when i realised. Traffic was not happy.

Wasn't sure about the height of my vehicle at the time. Never previously needed to know. And yes - I was focused only on the road ahead because I was somewhere I had never been before, and relied on the satnav to keep me informed. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I only want to head down the east side of the river to the Pont de l'Arche?

This year we went west of Rouen more or less straight through👍 Although a few roadworks hopefully they will all be finished by January,
I am not sure if older vans are allowed this way due to euro ?
Also I don’t have a critter sticker but are euro 6

As Steve says, just go over Pont de Brotonne bridge which is an easy Westerly Bypass of Rouen. ✔️

Asfaik you can still go along the A28 through the big tunnel, over the bridge and turn back on yourself up to burnt cow island.

I went there myself via Rouen last year. My satnav sent via me a different & tunnel-free route this time. Different to 5 years ago that is.

Did that the previous year but the west side was much easier for us this year, three are probably lots of different routes 🙂

IMHO there are lots of better routes to Pont de L'arche than going through the centre of Rouen, you really would be better off looking at a map first.

I came through about 10 days ago

On return home I go through tunnel then off right up to traffic lights and go down the Eastern industrial side .same when travelling to UK.

Is there a route through Rouen for a Crit Air 4 nowadays?

I’m about to find out if you get a fine for traversing the Rouen LEZ as I’ve been through it a couple of times on my normal route to Pont de L’Arche. However, stupidly I didn’t pick up that you can now get up to 24 free day passes for the Rouen LEZ, for any non-compliant Crit Air 4/5, simply by applying on line here:

I think it might have been mentioned elsewhere but repeated here for info.
