Hi all
Looking for a scenic trip in Germany and came across the romantic road.
Has anyone travelled this route and is it worth doing?
Thinking of crossing into Holland and driving through Germany returning poss Switzerland France
Looking for other routes
Any advice pucs would be nice

We are thinking about doing some of the RR this July. We haven't travelled much in Europe previously, so a little unsure about using Stellplatz. I get the impression you have to arrive reasonably handy to get a spec in most places. Is that a fair assumption?
I’ve just come back from 3 week tour & uses 10 different sites across Bavaria region inc in the city of Munich. In most cases almost nearly at capacity and that has also been my experience at other times of the year. However don’t let that deter you as you won’t be disappointed and you will get to stay in some great places. At that time of year, just give yourself a plan B just in case as you generally don’t have to drive to far to find another. Also I often do a google to see if there is a webcam covering the SP and use that as a guide as to how busy it’s likely to be. Some of them you can actually book a place in advance - eg those next to a Wellness Spa or like the one I stayed at on the outskirts of Munich, you just call and speak to the owner (in English thankfully!).

Cheers thanks for that 👍

We had no problem July 2023 except Fussen, there was space but not in the stellplatz we originally went for. As I remember the prices were pretty standard, not many free as in France, although I could be thinking of Italy where everywhere was €20!

Thinking of this trip beginning Sunday . Dover Calais then wondering best stops and route forward do you have a route plan
I just set the satnav for Würzburg. Stayed in the stelplatz on the river for a couple of nights. We then followed the romantic route signs stopping at various towns and villages on routes. Loads of great stelplatz to stay on.

We had a bash at it last year en-route for Austria. Whilst it definitely is all excellent, after day 4 we decided is was getting repetitive and cut to Salzburg. But we had limited time.
How many cute English county towns would you visit in one week... ?
IMHO the Alpenstrasse possibly gives more bang for the buck, with regard to having highly varied scenery and towns.

We thought the same several years ago when we did it. The bottom bit around Fussen and the lakes and as you say the Alpenstrasse is fabulous but the rest of it I found boring. Once you get into Austria, Salzburg, Tirol and the Austrian lakes east and south east of Salzburg its even better. Thats just my opinion though. We like big mountains, lakes etc. German and Austrian beer is fantastic though. :D

Just subscribed to park 4 night for a month, we're going to Poland on the way home 🤪 mad I know. But Aneta wants to visit her homeland and while we're across the channel, why not 😊
So we'll try and see moselle Valley, romantic road towns and Beethoven-Haus, Bonn. I'm also thinking a stop in Prague on the way back 🤔

I expect it's going to be a big drive but no time constraints 👍

If you get good weather try the zugspitze and or the Grossglockner, it's stunning.
As has been mentioned lake Constance is a firm favourite and can get busy.
We stayed at Meersburg last year and lindau am see the in 2023.
Might go back this year and take a flight in the Zeppelin.

If you visit Munich you can stay in the Allianz stadium and take the train into the centre.
The Marianplatz and the Munich surfers in the English garden are an easy way to while away the day

Graydo

First two pics Grossglockner, third Zugspitze then Bechtesgarden's eagle's nest and the Munich surfers.

We are more than 3/4 way down, on the stellplatz of Terrassen-Camping am Richterbichl at Rottenbuch. We got the RR tourist map in Wurtzburg and stopped at towns that sounded interesting. Schongau lasted 20 minutes, after a walk up the hill from the SP which had a Possl rally! Another couple of days and we will turn right past Lake Constance and down to Annecy and the Med. It has rarely stopped raining, except luckily when we are walking out. PS I think we entered the Clean Air zone in Augsburg without a sticker; no obvious warning, to get to a SP.
