Roll up, roll up, book your booster jab now!

Barmy , that’s even more strange. I don’t understand why there’s no consistency. It came up because I was chatting to one of my old work partners who’s the senior partner of one of the surgeries in town. He was moaning, we’re both registered at the other practice in town, I said that his was the same as my son is registered with him! He had no idea so is looking at it. I don’t understand , I assumed it was the way individual practices set it up but clearly not.
Thought Covid jabs were completely on a different window to medications etc.BUSBY.

Had what I thought was mine a fortnight ago, was then told by my GP that is wasn't a booster but a third primary dose with a booster due next April.

What did he mean by 'primary' dose? That's got me a bit concerned as my first jab appears to be the one that caused me issues which I do NOT want to repeat.

As per the below screen shot from 8 November you can 'officially' book your booster jab HOWEVER you can actually do it now so I and hubby have booked ours.

Unfortunately, not in Wales.

We have to wait for an invitation.

If you are immunocompromised you with have three doses as part of your Primary course and then a Booster about 6 months later.

If you are not immunocompromised then you will have had two doses as pare of your Primary course and then will have a Booster 6 months later. Most people had 2 doses of Pfizer or Astra Zeneca as their Primary course. Almost everyone is having Pfizer for their Booster unless it is contraindicated. In a few area Moderna is being given as a Booster but that is half the dose of the Primary course.

A small number of people had Moderna for their Primary course as well.

I’m booked for 21st at the local pharmacy. Could have changed it to a week earlier but decided to leave it

Been there . Seen it. Done it. Got the badge.
But felt awful for two days... headache, shivers, aching joints.
Pfizer. Rumour has it that countries can only have it so long as they disclaim Pfizer from any litigation re side effects. Hummm... power of the big US drug companies.

I've got mine booked for 23rd November, earliest date I was eligible for, so that means that day I'm getting a 'top-up' which will make up for the day before's 'withdrawal' when I will give a blood test sample ... good job I don't mind needles now!

I had my booster Thursday evening and felt absolutely terrible the next day , like you aching joints ,shivering and no energy so had a day in bed . 100% better today but if you read the leaflet that they give you at the time of the vaccination these are common side effects that may effect more than 1 in 10 people.

Effectively it's a third primary jab like the first two. MY first two were AZ this one was Pfizer plus the only place that does them around here is Ripon racecourse rather than a local one in Harrogate which offers the boosters.

What with having to inject myself every week, flu jab and now this I'm beginning to feel a bit like a tea bag.

Personally MG I don't know why they just don't say it's a booster and that I'll get another in 6 months. Calling it a 3rd primary just makes people nervous.

Thank you for the heads up , had text today offering me an appointment from Drs surgery -many slots available but all on same day in 2 weeks when I am NOT available. ( away in Moho yaaay ) so went online now and have an appointment for TOMORROW at 3.30 . Very grateful x

It's not what you may consider when comes to shift or drift known as mutation, this article may shed light on the situation, keep in the que you could be there for a very long time.
From what has been observed thus far regarding the genetic evolution of SARS-CoV-2, it appears that the virus is mutating relatively slowly as compared to other RNA viruses. Scientists think this is due to its ability to “proofread” newly made RNA copies. This proofreading function does not exist in most other RNA viruses, including influenza. Studies to date estimate that the novel coronavirus mutates at a rate approximately four times slower than the influenza virus, also known as the seasonal flu virus. Although SARS-CoV-2 is mutating, thus far, it does not seem to be drifting antigenically. It should be noted, however, that SARS-CoV-2 is a newly discovered virus infecting humans. There are still many unknowns, and our understanding of the SARS-CoV-2 virus continues to grow

Second shift

Influenza viruses undergo antigenic shift, an abrupt, major change in the virus’s antigens that happens less frequently than antigenic drift.

It occurs when two different, but related, influenza virus strains infect a host cell at the same time. Because influenza virus genomes are formed by 8 separate pieces of RNA (called “genome segments”), sometimes these viruses can “mate,” in a process called, “reassortment.” During reassortment, two influenza viruses’ genome segments can combine to make a new strain of influenza virus.

Reassortment results is a new subtype of virus, with antigens that are a mixture of the original strains.
When a shift happens, most people have little or no immunity against the resulting new virus (as shown by the “x” marks below). Viruses emerging as a result of antigenic shift are the ones most likely to cause pandemics.

Coronaviruses do not have segmented genomes and cannot reassort. Instead, the coronavirus genome is made of a single, very long piece of RNA. However, when two coronaviruses infect the same cell, they can recombine, which is different than reassortment. In recombination, a new single RNA genome is stitched together from pieces of the two “parental” coronaviruses genomes. It’s not as efficient as reassortment, but scientists believe that coronaviruses have recombined in nature.
When this happens, scientists identify the resulting virus as a “novel coronavirus.” The generation of a novel coronavirus, although occurring by a different mechanism than antigenic shift in influenza viruses, can have a similar consequence, with pandemic spread.
Alternatively, pandemic influenza viruses can sometimes arise, not by reassortment but by “zoonosis,” when an influenza virus that infects other animals, often birds or pigs, makes the leap into humans and starts to spread.
This happens with coronaviruses, too, with new human coronaviruses, or genes of new human coronaviruses, coming from ancestral coronavirus es that have infected other animals, such as bats, camels or pangolins.
To date, we have seen coronaviruses act like influenza viruses in generating outbreaks and now a pandemic from processes of recombination and zoonosis generating novel human coronaviruses (resembling the antigenic shift and zoonotic origin of new human influenza virus subtypes).
Thus far, we have seen human coronaviruses mutate but not undergo antigenic drift. This is good news for coronavirus vaccines. Nevertheless, given the similarities between the behavior of influenza viruses and coronaviruses, there is ample reason to remain vigilant for the possibility of future antigenic changes in SARS-CoV-2 and to be prepared to alter a potential COVID-19 vaccine, if necessary.

There hasn't been much publicity of late about the Flu Jab being offered for those who have not had it alongside the Booster. Anybody who has had the booster any info?

Lots of flu jabs available ,if your over 60 it's free from most chemists/ pharmacies ,just check on line for your local area jab point. Most Boots chemists do them btw.

Had my booster yesterday Phizer instead of the previous Astra Zenaca, apart from a slighty aching arm this morning no issues, Tracy had hers a month ago and its still not showing on the NHS app however apparently it cannot show your booster jab as it is not yet capable showing more then 2 covid jabs.
Hope it's modified before our next trip abroad.

Yes I know and had mine a month or so ago but I was wondering if the Vaccination Centers are mopping up those who have not been proactive in getting their Flu jabs.

My next door neighbour works at a surgery that gave out the first covid jabs..their policy after so many people said no and they asking why etc.creating a backlog on phoning folks they just stopped trying and if some one said no ,they just said ok and called the next on the list . We had a text for our flu jab but we're on holiday and couldn't get back in time so had to decline .there was no offer of a second appointment and just in case we had been backpedaled on the list for next time we made one at Boots a week later..no issues and recorded on our NHS history.

Ive got mine booked,i went on the nhs app and i get it on the 1st dec,at gringley on the hill 👍

Booked mine as per previous post - all went perfectly no side effects didn’t feel the needle
BUT
woman who came in after me was turned away as she had booked on line, even given a slot etc but had her second Covid jab less than 6 months ago. She was upset and saying media encouraging people to book, the lovely staff told me it has happened before - confusion in the message? You can BOOK now but date you choose must be 6 months one day after second jab.
