Road tax

The Road Tax on my Buses 10yrs ago, was £500 a year.

The PHGV VED does seem VERY low, I wonder if the M P families that run Horseboxes have anything to do with it? 🤔

PS. Lenny HB I'm not sure that Goods vehicles of the same weight ARE Taxed at the same rate, I THINK, that little word PRIVATE makes a big difference? 🤔
I run a 7.5t truck for work, same VED as the motorhome.

None of it makes sense

Our Motorhome £165 VED ULEZ £300 day
My Car £710 year ULEZ £12.50
Wife’s car £255 VED ULEZ zero

My mate has just bought a 1970 Rolls Royce silver shadow. 55 years old 6.75 litre petrol

£0 VED
£0 ULEZ
NO MOT Required

How old Is your £710 car? What Is it? Is this the new luxury car tax for new, more expensive vehicles? £710 seems a bit silly.

That seems a hell of disparity, as I said earlier, 10yrs ago, the VED on my Double Deckers was £500 and they only weighed 12tons? 🤔

My electric motorbike (50cc moped equivalent) that I only bought for use on trips in the motorhome is going from £0 to the same as a petrol 50cc. A bit annoying as it is mostly used abroad!

How much is that though, mopeds used to be very cheap to tax

For PHGV (motorhomes over 3500kg) it's going from £165 to £171. Fair enough.

For cars produced between 2001 - 2017 it's just reasonable inflationary increases too although high emission cars can pay up to £700 ISH but that's nothing new.

It's the new cars that are being stung with increased rates for the first 5 years.

This seems a good explainer...

But how much is it going to be for cars registered from April 2017 to March 2025? Our 2018 Smart currently is £190 I think, how do I find out what that's going to be?

Remember the days when everyone paid the same £30 (?) Road tax
Life was so much simpler then, am I showing my age

You are not old enough, it was £25 on my first car.
That was over double my weekly wage, that makes current rates in real terms look cheap. But not for us living on pensions.

I was told that if you have a car that's currently £0. Re-tax it in March regardless as to how much you've got left. It'll cost you nothing. And it'll delay the new rate for a few months. 😁

Am I missing something, I thought Labour was all about GROWTH!

How is taxing the hell out of new cars for the next 5 yrs going to help the car industry?
Is it all supposed to persuade us to buy electric when all the British manufacturers are cutting back on making EV's? 🤔

£190 !!!!! robbing 8astards

I reckon it will go up like all the others - inflation ISH. It's the extra charge on new cars years 1 - 5 that is the new thing causing all the upset.

Ah, now that's a thought. If sorn my £0 electric moped now and the retax it on Feb 1st will get a year from then? I think it's only about £30 for a year but even so. I should have retaxed it back in November when they announced this!!

Edit: can't sorn it as I'm in Chile and don't have any details

Even better sorn it towards the end of Feb and re-tax in March! 😄

They are about growth - the growth of the money in their pockets !

Are there any small cars that are zero anymore?

We have an EV and intend to play this game, but you don’t need to SORN, just retax as long as you have the V5
If you re-tax though it will be from when the tax runs out won't it? If the tax isn't due until 1st April that's when it will run from so won't you get charged the April rate?

looks like my 2007 ford 2.2 transit dethleffs globevan will £345 tax £336 insurane a year £13 a week. I get my state pension paid weekly so budget weekly

Think I will just keep my motorhome and car.
Motorhome Diesel 3 litre 5 ton PHGV £165 a year
Car Diesel 2 litre £20 a year 👍

EV’s are currently £0, ours is taxed till end of March but the DVLA system actually lets you retax a vehicle that is already taxed

So in Feb or March I can retax for 12 month at the current rate of £0, putting off the increase till next March

Anybody facing the high value increase which I think is an extra £400 on top of the tax can waste one month tax to put off the increase till next year

It only works if tax is due in April or close, or if the existing tax is very low

Anybody on £0 or low tax should be doing it I think a lot of currently low taxed vehicles are going up to £195 and the owners are not yet aware

How much is the fine for being untaxed?  What are the chances of being caught? Who's the registered keeper (Charles Windsor, 1, The Mall, London)?

Bit like not paying council tax, be a pensioner, take the jail time 3 square meals a day, no heating bills, free tv all day, free laundry. Do the winter inside, summer out and about in your MH.

After all you've paid in all those years (y):rolleyes::ROFLMAO:

For clarity, this response is in jest afore the high and mighty legalistic types get to this line

You can if there's no change in ownership, you can tax it up to two months in advance and it will be added on to the existing remaining tax, eg 2 months left, add 12 months = 14 months.

So where in that does it say PHGV Motorhome’s tax is rising from £165 to £171 as far as I can see on the Gov web site it’s £165 no change🤔
