Many of you may know this, but I didn’t …..spoke to the warden today who confirms the Crystal Palace site is closing on 17 December. A great shame and one of the CMCs best sites in my book. My first visit there was for the Olympic Games in 2012 and I’ve been going regularly ever since. It was a special site given its location and probably the only reason I’ve retained CAMC membership in recent years.

Think I had read somewhere that the closure is because lease not being renewed? I have never been there as fairly local for me but heard good things about the site. Wonder if ULEZ paid a part too?

Great site, the closure has been coming for a longtime but doesn’t make it any easier. We have some great memories over the last 25 years. Another nail in the “Clubs” coffin.

Took our 2 granddaughters there 20 years ago when they were aged 5 and 6 , stayed there for a week and took the bus into the city centre every day.

Wonder if ULEZ paid a part too? Correction:

Just seen not in the ULEZ zone 👍

We used to stay there when daughter shared a flat near Oval cricket ground. The number 3 bus stopped at the end of her road. Fond memories.

It’s well inside the ULEZ zone, the Zone goes out to the M25,

Where the red line stops is Crystal Palace,

Been there many times.....
The first 2 times when at the old site next door to current site and literally underneath the TV mast..
Fun fact.... did you know that there used to be a F1 motor racing circuit at Crystal Palace.. there is still evidence of armco barriers around the park.. think It closed late 60s, early 70s... II do know Jackie Stewart raced there in his day!!

Fun fact 2, Crystal Palace circuit featured in the 2013 film ‘Rush’ about the rivalry between James Hunt & Nicki Lauda

Yes indeed... small glimpses of Crysal Palace area in shot.( TV mast.. Old Building etc) but not the track they actually film the race scenes on..

1978ish, Margaret was seriously following Athletics and there was a trial meet at the athletics stadium there for qualification for the upcoming Olympic Games.
I'd never been to London, or ever towed anything before and we borrowed a caravan to go there with our Austin 1800.

Stayed at a site at Epping Forest and had a dry run minus caravan to find our way to Crystal Palace. Managed that and got back to Epping Forest.
Following day hitched the caravan and soon got lost in London!! . I think that the only map we had was the one in the AA book!
Eventually got there and enjoyed 2 or, 3 days of athletics whilst staying on the site.
Great memories(y)

Watched motorcycle races there with my uncle, had to climb a chain link fence to get in, did not realise that he did not have tickets. what can I say I'm still a London Boy, climbing days over though.

People worry about being close to Cellular Masts and yet are quite happy to stay under a 200 kilowatt transmitter (used to be a megawatt transmitter when analogue).

Suppose it might wirelessly charge your leisure battery whilst you are under it 😄😄

Kennington :( Is she still alive?
Oh gosh, my daughter is alive and well. Please don’t worry. Thankyou though. I didn’t put that very well at all. I meant fond memories of our trips to the site to visit her. She got married last month and is off to Panama with her new husband in November. We will be visiting but not in the van!

The CAMC have kept the site for a few years on a year by year lease renewal but apparently it is no longer up for renewal. Various reports of what the owners (council?) are going to do with the site.

I wouldn’t worry about living close to a cellular mast but I suppose if there was a health risk to both then there’s a difference to living permanently by one and a few days break.
