Revolut / pre-loaded cash card use in Spain

Surely that is what this debate is about, withdrawing cash from a bank, albeit not your card issuers. In point of fact in this case cash is not king, and if you follow the news could very well disappear as a tangible method of purchase in our lifetime.

It'll never happen here while I am alive. Only just got chip & pin & many places don't even take cards.

If you use your free uk card for a transaction in Spain. You will be charged by the UK banks for the Transaction, you will also be charged for buying a foreign currency and you will get stiffed on the exchange rate too. The Caxton card is free and does not charge for any transactions made in Spain. However, the exchange rate is about 3 cents lower per pound sterling than the Caxton Red which costs as stated above. If you buy enough Euros or any of the other 15 or so currencies you can hold on the card it pays for itself.
No lots of UK banks have accounts that issue cards that have no charges for use abroad (shopping and cash withdrawal)
Nationwide
Santander
Metro bank
And I also can recommend Starling bank gives you Stirling and euro accounts so you can make instant transfers between currencies.

As posted on here I assume DB is for Germany?
Spanish free ATM,
Unicaja
Bankinter
Ibercaja
Targobank
Deutsche Bank

I went to Bankinter today to draw cash. Machine broke after the woman in Front of me finished.

Went to Santander who wanted to charge me 3.5% for drawing cash, €7 on €200.

So went back to bank inter later on

Thanks for ringing me up to speed on this.

Hi PhilandMena just an update to the info above , did a bit of checking
Santander the account we have zero account is no longer available.
Nationwide debit card is linked to it's paid for flex plus account, but what I have is the free credit card, worldwide use without fees.
Metro and Starling banks both have free accounts with debit cards which can be used abroad no charges.

Thanks again for this. I'm happy to stay with Caxton as I know where I am with them and able to talk directly with customer service staff if a problem arises and not restricted to web chat only option that applies to some of the other cards. Also, what I like with Caxton is I can buy Euros and other currencies and store them on my card for future use, so taking advantage of the exchange rate when it is good. I spoke with Starling this morning and this option is not available on their card. As for Nationwide Flexi Plus, we will be opening an account with them next month to take advantage of the travel insurance and breakdown service which will cover our car in the UK and our motorhome whilst in Europe. The amount we are saving on our Travel Insurance is not matched anywhere else.

Just make sure you check the T&Cs carefully and also the time/age limits.

Yes! We are doing a 135 Day trip (X2) and as I am now 70 and this requires additional payments. So, 2 long trips in 12 months, one adult at 70. both with pre existing medical conditions (Wife just getting over operation). £455.0 next year, wife's medical history will no longer be included so price for cover will drop and we get £100 if recommended by an existing NFA holder (arranged with family member) so cover for first two trips will be a total of £355.0 There is nowhere else to come anywhere close to this. The free breakdown cover for my motorhome in Europe is worth £65.00 alone. My car in the Uk is also included as is our phones. £13.00 per month. If you are under 70 have no pre existing medical the travel insurance is free for the first 30 days too.

Starling Bank.
debit card , no currency charge, very good exchange rate.
up to £300 perday from atm
just got check if the ATM charges for cash withdrawal, same as using any debit card.
no charge to set up.
oh and it sends an instant receipt to your phone of any spend.
with a bit of interest on your current account balance.
I checked out this bank and unlike revolut, you cannot load money without going to a post office, correct me if I’m wrong.

Mickey.

Yes, you can add a Euro account to the Starling card, so you can see both currencies in the app, just like Caxton etc. As I said before, load pounds on the Revolut card then exchange them because the rate is the best, then just send the resultant Euros over to the Starling card. So easy peasy. :gum:

And being a proper debit card, you can use the Starling at auto petrol pumps, and and it’s covered under the U.K. bank guarantee scheme thingy. (y)

I have been impressed with my mates revolut card. It seems he just tops it up adding £200 to it from his account when necessary. I watched him do this outside restaurants in Spain and as he was getting great euro rates I was really impressed. However didn't like the idea of transferring money using restaurants wifi. I was wondering if you can do this using your own mobile wifi in the motorhome and also using laptop. I don't use an internet ready phone although the wife does.

Plus sending euros over from revolut to starling you can withdraw €300 per day from starling with no charges if you need cash.

No one in his right mind would use wifi or internet that they weren't 100% sure of. I only use my own at home, or on the phone or friends&relatives internet.

funds go in electronically from another account.

cheques, are via letter and takes a week Which is poor when some accounts accept photographs via an app.

Actual cash, at any Post Office, cheques you write your account number on the back and put in an envelope and post to Freepost Starling. So, paying in a cheque is as near as the post box. (y)

The app bleeps at you every time you use it and within seconds, for anything including deposits. Also you get 0.5% AER to account balances below £2,000, and 0.25% to those under £85,000.

So far, I can't fault it. :gum:
