Knaus Man 640 Meg
Greetings!

We have just joined the group and would appreciate some advice!

We have a Knuas Meg 640 Vansation on a Man chassis and would like to swap out the Thetford 400 Bench toilet for Separett Tiny separating toilet, however I am not sure that I have the DIY skills or the confidence to take on the job.

I would appreciate any advice from anyone that has actually fitted this toilet. or something similar, especially in removing the existing bench loo - or if you can recommend anyone who might be able to carry out the job.

Kind regards,

Andrew

Wow £759 is enough to put most people off but just a small question, in a motorhome , where does the urine go? It says it just runs outside, not very good on tarmac.

Yes you are right I have just had another look but that one is £799 and looks to be more faffing about than a cassette.
I think it makes van life for those that prefer free camping and makes it easier as solids can be disposed of in a normal bin and the liquid is disposed in hedges🤔

The french cut out the middle contraption and pi.. direct into the hedge. :giggle:
Ah c'mon. It's not just the French. If they were honest most of the blokes on here have used the hedge from time to time. It's just that the French do it in daylight and almost anywhere!

Don't know why you'd bother.

Just install a SOG system, add a bio tab and dump it in any conventional toilet.

If out in the wilds, dig small hole, empty, allow liquid to drain, backfill.

Most of the time, we get a great slurry really quickly, and virtually no smell.

Hi AndyPip welcome to MotorHomeFun. Also welcome to the usual response to any question being “you’re wrong” rather than actual advice:)

One of the good things about a separating toilet is they don’t need much installation so putting it in will probably be easy. The bigger challenge will be making good after removing the bench. Note also you’ll be left with the hatch in the outside - people often build another cubby behind that.

You might get more help in the 4x4 camping area - I know Neilfg is looking at doing exactly what you are thinking about in his new van.

For others here, the reasons people might want to have a composting toilet are:
  • environmental impact
  • less smell
  • longer between empties
  • less reliance on paid sites
  • cheaper running costs
  • don’t need to carry/buy chemicals - eg if you’re in country where you can’t buy them

There are obviously advantages to cassette toilets too (which you all know) but presumably Andy has done his homework.

We swapped out a C250/260 for a separating toilet very easy on our previous van. Used it for years, having to go back a cassette is definitely a compromise.

Currently considering options to take the C400 bench toilet out with a shower and a swing wall. The aim is to make a stable level surface for the new toilet and doing it so that it looks ok is more challenging. Installing the new toilet is easy enough.

Initially, I was very gung ho, now I have it am not so sure, so spending more time researching.

In the meantime you can always try a cheap variation on a separating toilet, see https://www.flexaport.de/, bit challenging 😬

We fitted a Trelino in our motorhome and would never go back to a cassette toilet.

Some benefits are: takes up less floor space, easily lift out for thorough cleaning or give more space, never heavy or awkward to carry to Elsan point. The list goes on.

I think a separating toilet is a good idea, but whenever they are discussed there is never any information on the nitty gritty! How do you keep it all separate (thinking ladies here)? What if number two is more liquid than usual? Any real life experience? Serious questions as they look a good idea for wet rooms where the toilet could be lifted out to give more shower space.

I don't see that, what about all the plastic bags?
We never use any chemicals in our cassette.

I was just giving examples. You’re not forced to use plastic bags in a separating toilet and some people don’t and it’s because they don’t want to use Green.

It sounds a very messy affair carrying poo and p in bags or not, and all to save a day.
What do you do if you don't use bags where do you put all the residue?
Do you have to wash the pot out every time.

Could you repeat that again, but in English?
Which bit couldn’t you parse?

Maybe it is but different people value different things.

I’m not saying separating toilets are great, I’m not saying cassettes are awful. I’m just trying to explain why some people might make different decisions.

Intriguing.

We have to dispose of the dog's waste, why not our own...

But is the cup/bag sufficiently voluminous for a once-a-day dump? 💩
Having fully immersed myself in this experience it is quite a large container, the heat sealing special bags are very good, but it is more hands on than most could do, but it does work and is useable.

Keeping it separate for ladies apparently is alot to do with control, practice, size of the zones but mainly the design of the separator toilet some are better than others.

If your number 2 is messier than usual then you change the medium in the bucket, sooner rather than later.

Interesting use of the word parse considering your sentence structure.

'because they don't want to use Green'?

We'll start there.
