Repatriation of motor home

My wife is a named driver on our motorhome insurance but has never driven any of our motorhomes.
For the reasons highlighted above I will be removing her name from the insurance when it is due for renewal.

Sadly one of us can no longer drive so I will be doing the same for both vehicles.

A couple of years ago, I had a messy cycle accident in France, lots of blood and very sore ribs. I could drive but only until the painkillers wore off!
On return (slowly) to uk, my daughter and son in law quickly said they would have come out to the Loire and driven the Motorhome back. I pointed out that it only had two seat belts. Not a problem, they said, we would drop you at the nearest bus stop 😳

Why the controversy over named drivers? I told the insurers that Jan could not drive in Europe and that was the end of the matter!

And when you claimed they sent a driver out to pick you up?

If the driver is incapacitated for a lengthy period
(even a broken arm or leg, or a minor operation would stop you driving for a several months)

The driver and co-pilot can fly home.
But how does the vehicle get home ?
Just pay Ryanair's excess baggage supplement!:whistle2::giggler::getmecoat:

This is a hypothetical question, has anyone any knowledge of repatriating a m/h from an european country if the sole driver takes ill?
We have LV= Britannia breakdown & rescue and that is covered in UK section E and EU section G hope that’s useful🤔😊

I've been with Comfort for about 14yrs and I recall the conversation when I 1st took out the policy.
I went to put my wife on the policy and the woman asked if she would be driving the van. I replied "never".
I was advised that if she was added to the policy and I had a medical issue, she would be expected to drive it home. If I was the only driver, the insurance company would be responsible for repatriation.
(At that time I didn't have Breakdown cover with them)

Update
A big thank you to Speve! Having read his post, I once again called LV, this time with relevant section to hand. The agent this time checked throughly and after referring to the breakdown team has confirmed that a relief driver would be provided. I have lodged a complaint for the original incorrect information which they have confirmed was given.
We thank everyone for their input, motorfun community comes up trumps once again.
Brian
Please note you have to call breakdown team if you need to claim, not an obvious course for medical isssue.
Section G5 Relief Driver

we will:

your vehicle.
Important information about Relief Driver
Documentary evidence of the illness or injury must be supplied to us if you are
not to be charged for this service.

Just out of interest, is there any benefit at all from nominating a non-driving person? I can't see the point of it if they'll never drive the vehicle.

Reduced cost, for some unfathomable reason!

I have seen it advised that putting a 2nd driver with a good driving record on the policy can lead to a reduced premium.

My insurance renewal came through today and it wasn’t a particularly unpleasant surprise but it was still 20% up on last year. So I made the call (as you do) to see what can be done to reduce the premium.
Two options were offered (as I don’t want to reduce the mileage). 1) reduce the value of cover as the value at new is now over insuring the vehicle, which would reduce by 20% back to last year’s cost. And 2)?add the wife onto the policy, which for some bizarre reason reduces the premium by another 20%. Are they bonkers is have to ask?
Anyway I explained that Gill won’t even sit in the driver seat let alone drive the van and I removed her several years ago in order to avoid being told that she would have to drive the van in the circumstances where I was incapacitated.
All good so far but then I started to wonder where my incapacity insurance is coming from?
NFU who insure the van claimed their policy doesn’t offer this. Then I thought it would be my breakdown cover (NFU don’t cover vehicles over 3.5T so I have separate breakdown cover from driver guardian. Their policy is silent and only talks about repatriation in the event of breakdown that can’t be repaired.
I called saga, our travel insurance provider and they confirmed they don’t cover this.
I checked my older policies from Adrian flux and comfort and they both use almost the same wording as each other “ if the vehicle is out of use for a period of more than 8 hours as a result of breakdown or due to death, injury or serious illness of the only available driver……we will refund costs…..
a) the cost of taking your vehicle to the nearest garage or railway
b) shipping a replacement part
c) the cost of one of the following
1) hiring a replacement vehicle £70 per day up to £1000
2) hiring a chauffeur if the only available driver in your group suffers a serious illness. We will pay up to £100/ day up to £500 in total.
Although these values are a few years old they aren’t enough to repatriate the vehicle from somewhere in Europe should the worst happen.
I post this because until today I had believed one of my insurance policies would repatriate my van if I fell ill rather than my wife having to risk life and limb driving an 8.5m van for the first time.

Your very timely post has suggested that LV cover does provide for this eventuality (who will get a call from me tomorrow) but are they really the only provider of this cover?
