Removing self-amalgamating tape

I've just done a similar job with the wiring on our hymer central locking loom on the hab door. I've made a temporary repair by soldering the wires and wrapping them in insulating tape because I don't have shrink sleeve. To get at the wires I had to cut back the plastic braiding so I replaced this with clear plastic tubing cut with scissors into a spiral. Hopefully this will last until I replace the whole 5 core wiring when I get back to the UK.

Sounds like a good emergency repair. My problem is I cant get at the wires. From the door side, they're fed through solid insulation. And in the van side, I can't trace where they go. I'm hoping a savvy Funster will give me a clue. There is a huge amount of knowledge held my members. Thanks for posting your mend; it'll help many I'm sure.

I expect the wire goes into a duct in the wall and goes down through the floor. either routed in the double floor void if it has one or under the van behind the skirt. Have you looked there yet?

Just the same as with heat shrink which most people don't know is re-usable, pop the whole thing in a freezer over night and you will be able to unwind the SAT (Self Amalgamating Tape) and re-use it.

No, I havent thought to look under the van. Don't think the Bailey has a double floor but, if it has, how would access the void? Are the ducts in the wall accessible without dismantling the van?
I'm going to go out to where the van is in storage again this weekend so will have further explore. Got so damn cold today messing with the tape, I lost the will to live!
I'm a soft southern softie.

Trying to get my Hartal door into the freezer would have been worth watching. :)

If I'd done that, there would have been no point in trying to get the SA tape off. (y)
Of course there is, you can rejoin them! Just remember to insulate the joint

Self Amalgamating Tape works well!

I suggest you read the whole thread. It isn't possible to rejoin the wires due to their location. SA tape is great, for certain things, I agree.

And like heat shrink self amalgamating tape isn't reusable after being in a freezer :winky:

Hi ingwe. Sorry but I have no personal knowledge of your van. Ours is a self build & I know where every nut, bolt & cable & fuse is, but factory ones are a mystery to me. As long as you make the new access hole neat enough & make it reusable just incase of future problems. It will be fine.

there are no problems, just solutions waiting to be found. (Family motto)

good luck

I am going to try to explain my thoughts on your problem. You need to have patience with me and maybe read my attempt to solve your problem a couple of times.
Cut and inspection panel in the door, obtain a suitable piece of laminate to cover the new inspection hole. In the new piece of laminate fix a socket. ( miniature wall plug type) then connect the wires to this, having perhaps if needed extend them, they will sit inside the door, use self tapping screws to affix the inspection panel back. You could make the inspection panel a feature, use your imagination. If this works please donate £2 to a charity of your choice. If it does not work. I did not write this post.?
