Reminders from DVLA re Driving Licences

Don't need the D47P you need a D2, you can order a renewal pack from DVLA or get them from a main Post Office (if you can find onešŸ˜Š).
You can have the medical up to 120 days before and apply for licence up to 90 days before, if less than 56 days you will need to send a new photo.
No charge even if sending a new photo, info on D2 is confusing.
Ok thanks , so just to clarify . Using form D2 ill renew my licence complete with the C1 entitlement all in one go ?

The part that interested me in your post is this
"She did tell me that as it is on the system I can still drive under section 88 as long as my GP says I am fit to drive. She is sending out a letter stating that I can drive if my GP okā€™s it."

I've raised this before and been poo pooed by Funsters. "As long as the GP says I am fit to drive"
My take on that is that your (or my) GP should be consulted in order to be afforded s88 status. How would he/she be able to judge your fitness post some incident?
The official wording is a little diiferent.
ā€œIf you have a medical condition and
have been told not to drive by a doctor or
healthcare professionalā€
The important word is ā€œIfā€. Those of us that have a known medical condition that might affect our ability to drive may need a doctor to give us the ok. Most people are ok so long as they have not been told not to drive. My GP could not give me the ok after my heart attack because he doesnā€™t have the equipment to make the assessment, I had to wait for a stress test at the hospital.

Are there still delays in getting your C1 licence back even if I have no problems reported on my D4? Or are these delays because of medical issues?

My licence runs out on 25 May and I need to get my third C1 extension. I got my D4 from the D4D doctor on 2 March in plenty of time and there are no reportable problems. We are off to Europe for 6 weeks on 21 March and I will obviously need my licence, so I was going to wait until I got back on 2 May to make the application (with a new photo). But the problem is that we are also flying out to the USA at the end of July to visit our daughter and will need my new licence for the hire car.

Now I am having second thoughts. Should I apply within the 56 to 90 days period and before I go to Europe and tell them that I have lost my licence? Or should I risk it by putting in the application in early May? I have seen posts on MHF reporting that if you phone up and explain you need your licence urgently they expedite it. Is that possible?

The Doctor or Health Professional is not capable of telling if you are fit or unfit
to drive if you do not present yourself and ask the question.

I'm not suggesting for one minute that we should all book an appointment but if
you have a serious health problem, (and God knows, us fellas have to be draggged,
kicking and screaming to go to the Health Centre), how can you be told that you shouldn't drive?

There must be hundreds, if not thousands of drivers who, lets be honest, shouldn't
drive because of a health condition that they, and only they, know about.

It's the same throughout any of our life cycles. We may not like to ask the question
but it is down to individual responsibility to ensure that I/we/they are safe to drive.

I'm not speaking of this as a perfect specimen of health. I've got AF, Arrhythmia,
and Stenosis, but when this was diagnosed in 2000 I asked the question, and I continue
to ask the question. "Am I fit to drive"

With no health issues there have not been any delays for a couple of years now.
We did ours last year took less than 10 days.

Thanks for that Lenny.

Has anybody encountered delays in getting their C1 licence even though they had no health problems please.

In terms of reminders I never rely on anything coming through the post. I put them onto my calendar online, with a notification set so that it 'pings' up when I'm working on my computer. I also find scheduling an email to be delivered to myself on the relevant date is a useful way to make sure I see things which are important to remember.

It seems to be a lottery as to how long it takes. If you look at PlymBob thread he applied in November and still hasnā€™t got his license, though found out yesterday online that they approved it on 29 February- he has got a ferry booked for this Thursday. Others have said that they have been waiting for weeks now. I recently applied for my renewal and after 3 weeks ( knowing that some people had said they had got theirs back in 10 days) I rang them and they fast tracked for me for our Easter trip. License now in hand. My wife renewed her license (age 70) in September and as she never drives the motorhome she dropped (for now?) the C1 part and did it all online and new license was received within a few days.

But did he have any medical conditions that would affect renewal?

With health issues mine took about 7 weeks. I made sure I got it in with more than 56 days left, this seems to speed things up a bit.

None that he said Lenny and, as far as I know, he didnā€™t have any follow up from DVLA questioning anything. Can only assume the application was pending in their system. From my point of view the young lady that I spoke to last week couldnā€™t have been more helpful - she even rang me back at 6.30 that evening to say the new license was approved and would be posted the next day.

I think new photos may slow the whole thing down. Means they have update the records and do identity checks.

Another related question, is the renewal at 73 due on your birthday or the 3rd anniversary of the last licence?

The latter. My last license was dated 26 March but my birthday is 5 March, the delay being due to them wanting additional information on my eyes (I had had a visual problem about 20 years previous, which had sorted itself out, but I had to declare it on the forms).

What is the phone number you used please?

As previously said, itā€™s the latter. Which unfortunately for me means I continue to lose 2 months entitlement due to putting my renewal application in more than 56 days before my 70 year expiry date!

It is due on the expiry date shown on your licence, it can be either.

Not my experience. I have twice renewed in the 56+ day period without sending a photo and lost no time. My expiry date continues to be the day before my birthday.

I was renewing licence, first at 70, next at 73 and this one approaching 76. Forms correctly filled in.
No medical conditions so straight forward. Below is what I posted on here 1/2/24.
Posted Monday, received Tuesday, approved and renewed Thursday. Licence on doormat a few days later

Don't they pull your photo off your passport records these days?

Yes if you consent to that.

Government departments are not allowed by law to access an individual's information from other departments without the individuals consent, except in special circumstances, e.g. crime etc.

I poste my D2/D4 application from Poland probably about 10th Feb, but no idea when they received it. Licence expired 19.02.24. Online search showed it was renewed as from 22.02.24.

Presumably still in post, with redirection to a friend and then he will have to post it to me, but at least a computer check would show the new licence is valid.

DVLA are getting better, but as I have posted previously there is an ongoing examination of all DfT agency operations, including DVLA and DVSA, so maybe they have decided that jobs might be at risk and that they had better up their game - COVID excuse is a long time ago.

Mine looks like it was pulled from an Interpol file and I'm stuck with it for the next ten years by which time I'll have even less hair and teeth, and possibly skin.

They only seem to do that if the application can be dealt with by a computer with no manual input. For example, my wife has just updated her over 70 licence for the third time, but she opted to drop her C1 at 70, so all she did was follow the process on line. In that case she could refer to the photo she had submitted for her passport.

But I cannot see any way that you can use a passport photo automatically using a D2 form if you are renewing your C1 as well as the other categories. If you needed a new photo it has to be physically stuck on the relevant bit of the D2 form.
