Had those in Hymers for years only ever had one fail & that was because I scedently let it run dry.
Last van I replaced it with a pressure switched pump got fed up with the microswitches on the taps failing.

Hmmmm ... the Navigator ensures that we never run dry.
And mine is not easy to access, can only get one arm in the access ....

Can never understand why these pumps are not fitted with a level sensor, no water no pump. Not a hard thing to do.

I had one fail on my Hymer a few years ago. Since then I carry a spare but of course the new one’s never failed since then 😀

How about fitting a float switch? We used them all the time in the Navy ....bilges, fuel/water tanks etc. ....something here perhaps?

Absolute beginners.

The idea is sound, but you'd probably lose about a quarter of your water capacity giving the float enough room to float in, the bumping around would probably stop them "going to sleep" though ;).
Those types of floats work in large tanks, for waste water. An alternative would be the laser type of level reader, perhaps like this,
but I've not seen one fitted to van before, and they may only work on hook up for the majority of current vans 🤷‍♂️

Much simpler is a current sensor. Current drawn when pumping is around double that when running.

Is the time run on current drawn settable? Priming a pump may present problems unless there's an override function, 🤷‍♂️

A built-in off delay would solve that. Just a few seconds would do & if longer needed turn the tap off & back on. I built one for pumping an aquaroll into the on-board tank so I didn't have to listen for when it had finished.

Hi, I'm thinking of swapping out a submersible and micro switched taps.
How difficult is it to do.

Easy.
