Regional Superstitions - don't say 'rat' on the Isle of Man

At Strictly Manx last week in the Villa Marina on the Isle of Man (a fabulous night).

Shirley Ballas used the word 'rat' in conversation and the reaction from the audience was quite surreal. You could hear the murmurs spread through the room then everyone started whistling. Even the hosts/presenters were whistling.

Turns out it's very bad luck to say the word on the Island. You learn something everyday.

When my uncle ran his own fishing boat out of Cockenzie, he used to call them "scaley-tails" :eek:
 
You also have to say "Good morning/day to the fairies" when you drive over Fairy Bridge on the IOM
Otherwise you will have bad luck!
