l know this has been discussed many times but I would like some clarification and know there is a wealth of knowledge out there!

We have never really used a lot of gas, often using hook ups especially in winter. Hence, I have never seen the need for refillables, even when on the continent. However , after the hike in site prices I thought we might go more off Grid, CLs etc, also refillables would save me worrying about gas abroad.

After a lot of research and what I thought was an expensive quote for a Gas it system (fitted), I thought I would go for a large Safefill cylinder keeping one Calor in reserve, and made enquiries. I had practically ordered one when I called at my local LPG Centre, ( website says largest in South Wales). I saw they had a pump and called into the office, only to be told in no uncertain terms that they did not allow any refilling of cylinders. I know Morrisons allow Safefill to be refilled but am concerned that if they withdraw from the market it will be very difficult to find a dependable supply locally (Barry, South Wales).

I would be grateful for any feedback.

Just fill up when you're out and about - doesn't have to be your most local outlet. You can fill up anytime rather than having to wait for the bottle to be empty.

If they arenot refillingtanks or cylinders what the feck are they doing with it!
May be worth explaining clearly that they are proper refillable cylinders with a proper filler point.

If it needs explaining to them it is worrying they actually work there.

Did you show them your bottle.
They might have thought it was a regular calor/ illegal to fill bottle.

I've never had a problem -- any where
As I said I have not yet purchased a cylinder yet. I assure you I explained that it was a properly designed refillable cylinder. If they are theLPG specialists they claim then surely they should be aware of the growing Leisure market for refillables. I think they probably make more on exchange cylinders.

It’s probably a commercial decision rather than a technical one as profits will be more on exchange cylinders?

Possibly take a photo of your bottle showing where it says safefill?

Just refilled my 6kg Calor bottle for £12. I won't tell you where though in case i get the supplier into trouble.
Ridiculous that one has to take a "cloak and dagger" approach to a perfectly safe and proper procedure just because someone high up doesn't like it.

How do you know you've not over filled it?

Get GasLow.
External filling point
You can fill at any fuel station that sell LPG

Problem solved.

Also the filling point does not need to be within 200 miles of home, you just fill up when you need to

firstly, as I am sure many will suggest, no real need to have a local supplier, you can fill up anywhere.

I use an LPG pump finder app, which has proved very good.

I went for the same as you, one refillable, cost just over 300 quid, and easily installed it my self, gaslow.

We've always had refillable gas and wouldn't be without it, but for low gas users, an alternative might be a large lithium battery and large inverter. On this recent trip we've been using the electric kettle to make teas and coffees, the microwave to cook certain things, the single induction hob and a small air fryer, all at separate times (unfortunately) and on more than one occasion my wife's Dyson Air Wrap.
It has certainly made me think about what I would invest in if I was starting from scratch with just standard exchange cylinders. The ease of being able to use the electric kettle etc has lots going for it !!

I know that some on here have got much bigger and better setups that I can only dream of lol !!

The only problem if you are going to France etc, is some garages will stop you as soon as you open the door to fill the bottle. With gas low or a tank the filler can be mounted externally. We have tanks and never had a problem but did with a refillable bottle.

Plenty of places in this country that don’t allow any cylinders to be filled , we always warn purchasers of Safefill or Direct fill Gaslow not to be surprised if told no .
We are now tending to look at pretty much all installations before filling as there are so many trying to disguise what they are up to ⚠️

If you have an external fill point they won't know whether it's a cylinder, an external tank or engine fuel.

This. I had some one come out to see what I was doing at a Shell garage and as soon as she saw me going for the external fill point she smiled and walked away. I think if you open the gas locker and start messing around with bottles it attracts attention.

For me it was a no brainer getting refillables as we go to Europe a lot and it saves the hassle of non compatible bottles, connectors etc. Also saves a lot of money in the UK as we off grid a lot.

I have a couple of Gaslow bottles in the moho. I didn't use them much last year until the trip to Spain and France when from Zaragoza to Calais it was hovering around 2C to -4C and we used it for heating as well as cooking. We were hooked up most of the time for lights and microwave....

Not had any problems filling up so far. I use the myLPG.eu app on my phone to find one locally when I need to fill up. Looking at Morrison's @ Sittingbourne as this is allegedly cheap.

Morrisons Sittingbourne certainly is much cheaper than other places. Will check price tomorrow as will be going there to do some shopping so will post actual price.

And let me know where the pump is! :)

In three years I've only had one girl come and check, at the Asda garage in Derby. As soon as she saw my bottles in the cabinet she smiled and walked back to the kiosk.
No problems

Fair enough, but to be honest - for the few quid it costs to do a external fill point I think it was worth it. Easier to fill anyway.

A mate of mine didn't even bother getting refillables. Did 2 years touring UK and Europe full time refilling his Calor gas bottles at garages using ebay purchased adapters!!

I have used Gaslow for many years and never yet had a problem. Several years ago in France there was a fire and explosion (at a Total garage I think) and for some time Total refused to fill tanks and may have withdrawn the service, other than that, I now find I am filling up at camp sites, including the Lakes at Henlow, Beds and Greenhill Park near Stratford on |Avon.
