I’m am taking ownership of a motorhome shortly. It has a reversing camera which only operates during reversing. Some suggest having a rear view camera that is always on. Should I be considering a system upgrade or maybe an additional camera and dash mounted monitor.

Mine normally only comes on when in reverse but has a camera button on the satnav/radio/audio system which makes the camera live all the time. It's a Pioneer system.

I guess whether it has or not depends on the system it is fitted with.

Mine is pretty useless for being on all the time time though as it pointng down from the top of the rear wall. It's for parking purposes not to act as a rearview mirror.

We have a dual camera and it is great, while you have a working reversing camera, I would see how you get on before spending any money.

I fitted a dual rear camera system with the monitor that clips onto the existing rearview mirror.
I use one camera for rearview and the other tilted down for checking distance to obstacles to the back of the van when reversing, but I switch cameras via the monitor rather than wiring it to the switch for reverse on the gearbox.

This is the system that I bought and fitted.

Just fitted a full time camera and a five inch screen as I thought the seven too large, works a treat.

I have a dual view camera, it's always on and I have a switch to switch it between the down the road view and the view of my back bumper and towbar for reversing, one of the best things I bought for the van.

I fitted a dual rear camera a service camera and a front camera all switched via a relay switch box I made and viewed on my head unit.

Hi Badknee,
Seeing how your van is based on a Ducato, what was the install like to do. I am picking up a Devon XL on Wednesday and want to fit a dual camera. I am fairly handy with wires etc, just wondered if you had any tips.
Thanks

Might be a daft question, but why do you actually need a rear-view camera if you have a 'parking' one already?

What makes you say it has one already?

My previous van had a dual lens camera. It was really good. I had a monitor where the rear view mirror was that was permanently showing the view back up the road. Then when I hit reverse, the other view pointed down at my rear bumper appeared on the head unit screen.

Standard single lens reversing cameras tend to be very wide angle, they don't show much of what's behind you beyond a few metres. If you do point them up the road, even relatively close stuff quickly becomes a dot because the lens is almost fish-eye.

Yes come to the conclusion that dual is the way to go. Now it's rear view mirror or dash mount (rh side as it works better with standard mirrors IMO) but could be wrong!

Have mine for rear view also catches the cycle rack, can have it on overnight to view potential purchasers.

Because the original post says so.

@ Jo May. My mistake, I thought you were replying to my post above yours. I am looking at pulling the wires through from scratch.

I’ve just taken ownership of my first Motorhome, auto trail t625. It’s already fitted with what looks like the same monitor you have but only single camera. Not sure if it’s faulty though, every time I switch it off, then on on again it constantly reverts to Italian setup including thinking it’s left hand drive. Have you ever experienced this

TIA
Ian

Are you saying that you are selecting English in the language menu but it is not saving your selection?

Yes, it’s quite frustrating having to change it every time I drive it 😪

Why are you changing the language back to English each time, as I only need English if I'm changing the setting otherwise my screen just shows the rear view image with no wording on the screen each time I start my van.

Because every time I switch the ignition on, the camera turns on in left hand drive mode and Italian language, so I have to change it back every time

It possibly needs two live connections and only one is connected or they are connected the wrong way around, typically for stereos yellow is permanent connection and red is switched, the yellow powers the memory and the red switches the stereo on and off, I suspect your camera monitor will have something similar.

Hi Chris
That sounds like a good theory, I’ll see if I can trace the cables

Many thanks
Ian
